Sheltered pitches by the treeline

General

  • Fishing getaways and wellness retreats at spacious Norfolk site
  • A 35-minute drive from Norwich and 15 minutes from Snetterton Circuit
  • Fishing, obstacle course, fitness classes and licensed café

Grab rod and reel, prepare for some serious ‘you time’, and park up for a few days at Old Buckenham Country Park, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Norfolk village of Old Buckenham.

Starting stays with a thorough explore of the 35-acre site is a must. There are two lakes to stumble upon, bug hotels to fascinate inquisitive kids and grownups, and a mile-long obstacle course with a path alongside it for running. Explores all done, opt in to some of the fitness classes available on site.

Fishers should take special note of those lakes, claiming a patch of shore to set up for a day of peaceful catching. Fish aren’t the only animals to track down either: twitchers won’t be able to keep from craning their necks, with eyes peeled for chickens (on the ground, not in the sky), ducks, geese, kingfishers, swans and owls.

That’s a lot to fill days, so be sure to spend evenings having blissed-out moments next to the firepits dotted around site. When food starts beckoning, there are barbecues to borrow (if one hasn’t been brought from home) and pub grub at one of the Old Buckenham locals. A licensed café is open on site from Thursday to Sunday for sweet treats and drinks too, which should help keep energy and spirits up.

Overall we were very happy with our stay and would recommend Old Bucke08/13/2020

We had booked the camping POD but due to a double booking, were given a free upgrade to the Lakeside Container. Absolutely no complaints about this, the container was spacious with a double bed and bunk bed, storage space, electric cool box, kettle, toaster, drawers and shelves and a very well appreciated fan to keep us cool during the August 2020 heatwave. The large camping ground was situated in a quiet and picturesque rural setting, yet a short drive to stock up on essentials or visit the beautiful Thetford Forest. The café and bar area was a good place to relax and socialise and the staff were helpful. Overall we were very happy with our stay and would recommend Old Buckenham Country Park to couples or families alike.

    Disliked:

Areas for improvement are more showers and toilets (which were basic but clean) and the bins to be emptied more frequently (there was a lot of waste rubbish accumulating during our stay).

The cafe was great and at a beautiful setting overlooking a lake. Great selection of drinks. The shower blocks were basic but did the trick and we're pretty clean. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

The washing up areas could have been cleaned a bit more and there was no hot water making it tricky to wash up.

Open nature of site and clubhouse cheap pitch fees (but now I know why)

    Disliked:

Appalling lack of facilities. Only two showers, one drinking water point which consisted of a copper pipe with a rubber tube that was split. No plumbed dishwashing facilities. No mirror in toilets and limited toilet paper. Queues for toilets and showers for most of the day.
Rubbish not collected just left to pile up.
How this site claims it is COVID secure, heaven knows.
In the middle of nowhere, nothing much to do, no phone signal and occasional internet connection
    But just 3G 😬

    Disliked:

No WiFi or phone reception which makes some things difficult but that's to be expected considering the remoteness of the area.

Also liked the little fishing ponds but they need some predatory fish like pike or perch as it needs to balance out the non predatory fish

Local attractions

Anyone keen on craft booze may have found the ideal spot here. The site is 10 minutes’ drive from Elmtree Beers brewery and its on-site shop, and tours and tastings are to be had at English Whisky Co distillery, also 10 minutes away. If the vino is more appealing, it’s 35 minutes from base to Winbirri Vineyard for tours and tastings of reds, whites and sparkling wines.

Thirsts quenched, turn next to Snetterton Circuit (15 minutes) where – during well timed stays – guests can join the crowds to watch the GT Cup final, Mini races, time attack trials and fireworks. Not able to travel for a race? Have a go on the Circuit yourself, with track days and training days available for cars and motorbikes.

Those who prefer a slower pace to holidays can skirt Snetterton and opt instead for leisurely days among exotic birds, ferocious beasties and peaceable pets at Banham Zoo (five minutes), or hanging about with the alpacas in the nearby town of Diss (15 minutes).

When some time away from rural bliss is required, a 35-minute drive will land guests in Norwich to explore castle and cathedral, stroll in stunning gardens, learn a bit about history at one of the many museums, or burn a hole in wallets with shopping at the Norwich Market or in high-street stores.

Must see

  • Banham Zoo (3.2 kilometres)
  • Bressingham Steam and Gardens (9.5 kilometres)
  • Colman's Mustard Shop and Museum (24.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds (34.2 kilometres)
  • Oxburgh Hall (34.8 kilometres)
