  • Well-maintained rural Cambridgeshire site with two-acre fishing lake
  • A 20-minute drive to King's Lynn; Sandringham Estate half an hour
  • Animals to meet on site including wallabies, pygmy goats and ponies
Fancy doing a bit of fishing while on your break? Would meeting ponies, donkeys, wallabies, rabbits and pygmy goats make your kids’ day (or yours, for that matter)? If the answer to either (or both) of these questions is yes, then a stay at Virginia Lake Caravan Park should be on the cards. This well-maintained family-run site is in the Cambridgeshire countryside about 15 minutes’ drive from Wisbech and 20 minutes from King’s Lynn, and it’s a place that should find favour among all sorts of guests, including fishing fans, families and dog owners. The big attraction here is the fishing lake, which spreads over two acres and is stocked with bream, roach, rudd, perch and other fish including carp weighing 30 pounds plus. Day tickets can be bought on site, with kids welcome to fish as long as they’re accompanied by an adult at all times. If the kids don’t fancy fishing, they can spend a bit of time at the play area, meet the friendly farm animals or look out for local wildlife – muntjacs, foxes, bats, kingfishers and owls are among the species that are often spotted around the place. There are also football pitches, skate parks and a roller skating rink close by for easy outings. Other easy outings include the trip to Terrington St John (two miles away) for a restaurant, a pub and a fish and chip shop. A local shop is also within walking distance – handy for snacks, drinks and bits for a barbecue back at your pitch. On-site facilities include a washing-up area and chemical disposal point as well as a full amenities block with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.

What customers say

Virginia Lake is a small, friendly campsite praised for its welcoming owners and abundant clean facilities. Guests enjoyed meeting the animals and the fishing lake, with many highlighting the geese as a particular highlight. Spacious pitches and a peaceful atmosphere contribute to a relaxing stay. A nearby dog kennel occasionally caused noise disturbances, although this did not deter most visitors from recommending or returning to the site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We liked the site, its small and friendly.
We loved meeting the animals. The geese were friendly too and were a highlight having the babies visit. We had an electric grass pitch with plenty of room.
Lake for fishing was fab.
Toilets and showers were clean.

Disliked Disliked the amount of geese poop but it is what it is! The geese use the site like a nursery so a curse and a joy.
Not under the owners control, there is a kennels nearby so subject to sporadic barking

Disliked Goose poo but I do understand the geese are wild and this is well out of their control as well as the neighbours dogs barking ,

Electric grass tent pitch (solo)

Liked Very friendly and accommodating. Love the animals. Great price and a chilled place to stay.

Disliked Shame about the kennels, although that's not the campsite's fault.

The grounds are clean, tidy, and beautifully kept, creating a relaxing environment for both campers and caravan owners.
The fishing lakes are a real highlight. They are well looked after, peaceful, and offer a fantastic experience for anglers of all abilities. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or just looking to enjoy a few hours by the water, the lakes provide a perfect setting.
The campsite has a friendly atmosphere, with plenty of space and excellent facilities. The owners and staff are approachable, helpful, and clearly take pride in making sure visitors have a great stay.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The location is great. We came from Nottingham. We travelled down on the Friday and left on bank holiday Monday. Took less than 2hrs to get drive there on Friday and home on Monday.

It was hot this weekend so we went to the beach in the morning (old Hunstanton and Heacham were 45ish mins - 1hr away with the bank holiday traffic), and back to the campsite to go fishing in the evening.

The facilities were clean and we didn’t have to queue to use and of the sinks, water taps, toilets or showers.

The fishing lake is great. And literally a stones throw from the camping pitches.

The owners were really friendly & helpful. They were present enough to be helpful but not overbearing.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely picturesque site with level grass pitches available. Able to site campervan (with driveaway awning) how we wished. Courteous and friendly owners, spacious shower units in brick building and ample clean toilet facilities. Adjacent fishing lake attracted wildlife. After setting up we were able to enjoy our five night stay without interruption.

Local attractions

If you can bear to leave the fishing and wallabies behind for a while, you can set out to explore places like Wisbech (15 minutes), home to a swimming pool, a couple of cinemas and the historic houses Peckover House and Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House. King’s Lynn (20 minutes) is another option, with a couple of museums and the 11th-century museum. Kids can’t get enough of the animal antics on site? There’s more of a similar ilk at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes). For more of a grownup outing, set off to Sandringham Estate (half an hour) to roam around the 400-acre country park and gardens and learn more about royal life. And of course who could resist a day at the seaside? Heacham (35 minutes) and Hunstanton (40 minutes) are both excellent places to spend the day, with amusement arcades, rockpooling and watersports to try out. Sea Life Hunstanton is a great option for those who’d like to learn more about marine life.
