  • Well-maintained rural Cambridgeshire site with two-acre fishing lake
  • A 20-minute drive to King's Lynn; Sandringham Estate half an hour
  • Animals to meet on site including wallabies, pygmy goats and ponies
Fancy doing a bit of fishing while on your break? Would meeting ponies, donkeys, wallabies, rabbits and pygmy goats make your kids’ day (or yours, for that matter)? If the answer to either (or both) of these questions is yes, then a stay at Virginia Lake Caravan Park should be on the cards. This well-maintained family-run site is in the Cambridgeshire countryside about 15 minutes’ drive from Wisbech and 20 minutes from King’s Lynn, and it’s a place that should find favour among all sorts of guests, including fishing fans, families and dog owners. The big attraction here is the fishing lake, which spreads over two acres and is stocked with bream, roach, rudd, perch and other fish including carp weighing 30 pounds plus. Day tickets can be bought on site, with kids welcome to fish as long as they’re accompanied by an adult at all times. If the kids don’t fancy fishing, they can spend a bit of time at the play area, meet the friendly farm animals or look out for local wildlife – muntjacs, foxes, bats, kingfishers and owls are among the species that are often spotted around the place. There are also football pitches, skate parks and a roller skating rink close by for easy outings. Other easy outings include the trip to Terrington St John (two miles away) for a restaurant, a pub and a fish and chip shop. A local shop is also within walking distance – handy for snacks, drinks and bits for a barbecue back at your pitch. On-site facilities include a washing-up area and chemical disposal point as well as a full amenities block with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.

Liked The tranquility and the lake for fishing

Disliked Had to pay extra to use air conditioning in caravan
Geese poo all over the grass area (but it was nice to see them wondering about)

From the manager: We are pleased that you enjoyed the lake, fishing and the wild geese.
We are always honoured to host them for the three months that they stay with us each year. It really is a compliment that they choose our lake as a safe and suitable place to raise their young families on and we really miss them when they leave us each year. Unfortunately though, wild geese are just like people and if they eat then they need to poo too - at least theirs is just grass which washes easily away and it really is a small inconvenience for the great pleasure that they bring to so many people 😊
Please correct your statement that you paid extra for air conditioning as your booking did not. Our site rules clearly state that air conditioning units are not included in pitch prices simply because we charge a very competitive and reasonable all in one flat fee pitch price. All of our pitch fees are inclusive of up to 4 people, pets, awnings, water, free heated showers and electricity. The electricity included is a very generous allowance of 16 amps all of which is just £30 per night (in high season too). In order for us to be able to offer this and keep our prices as low as possible for all campers we simply cannot afford to, nor do we wish to include air conditioning units in the all inclusive pitch fee.

Liked We had a wonderful stay at this campsite and would highly recommend it. The hosts were incredibly friendly and welcoming.

The grounds are beautifully maintained, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Everything was clean, tidy, and clearly cared for with great attention to detail.

One of the highlights of our stay was the beautiful animals on site. They were a delight to see and added so much charm and character to the campsite, making the experience even more special.

Overall, this is a lovely campsite with fantastic hosts, stunning grounds, and wonderful animals. We look forward to returning in the future.

Disliked Totally out of the owners control but worth mentioning, there is a kennels very close by so if you're a light sleeper, you may want to bring earbuds.

Liked We liked the site, its small and friendly.
We loved meeting the animals. The geese were friendly too and were a highlight having the babies visit. We had an electric grass pitch with plenty of room.
Lake for fishing was fab.
Toilets and showers were clean.

Disliked Disliked the amount of geese poop but it is what it is! The geese use the site like a nursery so a curse and a joy.
Not under the owners control, there is a kennels nearby so subject to sporadic barking

Liked So it was nice and clean nice and friendly owners facilities were good

Disliked There must be a dog kennel next door because dogs were barking all night and I got zero sleep

From the manager: This visitor booked a small £10 pitch (cyclist size small tent), but arrived with a big 4 man tent, 2 dogs and a car which we went out of our way to accommodate and find space for on a fully booked bank holiday weekend. We also generously honoured the £10 site fee instead of charging her the actual pitch fee of £35, or turning her away from the campsite. The review states that she liked the facilities and cleanliness "so it was nice and clean" and then gives a rating of just 6 which totally contradicts the praise of nice and clean. As for the location score of just 4 we definitely don't understand this considering the lady told us that she chose the site because her father lives very close by; so surely the location was ideal. Her father even visited her here on site (a day visitor that again we should have charged for but didn't). It is very disheartening when kindness and generosity is not appreciated, but at least our showers, toilets and all other facilities were "nice and clean".

The fishing lakes are a real highlight. They are well looked after, peaceful, and offer a fantastic experience for anglers of all abilities. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or just looking to enjoy a few hours by the water, the lakes provide a perfect setting.
The campsite has a friendly atmosphere, with plenty of space and excellent facilities. The owners and staff are approachable, helpful, and clearly take pride in making sure visitors have a great stay.
If you're looking for a peaceful getaway where you can enjoy camping, caravanning, and quality fishing in beautiful surroundings, Virginia Lakes is hard to beat. We had a wonderful time and can't wait to return. Highly recommended!

Local attractions

If you can bear to leave the fishing and wallabies behind for a while, you can set out to explore places like Wisbech (15 minutes), home to a swimming pool, a couple of cinemas and the historic houses Peckover House and Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House. King’s Lynn (20 minutes) is another option, with a couple of museums and the 11th-century museum. Kids can’t get enough of the animal antics on site? There’s more of a similar ilk at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes). For more of a grownup outing, set off to Sandringham Estate (half an hour) to roam around the 400-acre country park and gardens and learn more about royal life. And of course who could resist a day at the seaside? Heacham (35 minutes) and Hunstanton (40 minutes) are both excellent places to spend the day, with amusement arcades, rockpooling and watersports to try out. Sea Life Hunstanton is a great option for those who’d like to learn more about marine life.
