  • Well-maintained rural Cambridgeshire site with two-acre fishing lake
  • A 20-minute drive to King's Lynn; Sandringham Estate half an hour
  • Animals to meet on site including wallabies, pygmy goats and ponies
Fancy doing a bit of fishing while on your break? Would meeting ponies, donkeys, wallabies, rabbits and pygmy goats make your kids’ day (or yours, for that matter)? If the answer to either (or both) of these questions is yes, then a stay at Virginia Lake Caravan Park should be on the cards. This well-maintained family-run site is in the Cambridgeshire countryside about 15 minutes’ drive from Wisbech and 20 minutes from King’s Lynn, and it’s a place that should find favour among all sorts of guests, including fishing fans, families and dog owners. The big attraction here is the fishing lake, which spreads over two acres and is stocked with bream, roach, rudd, perch and other fish including carp weighing 30 pounds plus. Day tickets can be bought on site, with kids welcome to fish as long as they’re accompanied by an adult at all times. If the kids don’t fancy fishing, they can spend a bit of time at the play area, meet the friendly farm animals or look out for local wildlife – muntjacs, foxes, bats, kingfishers and owls are among the species that are often spotted around the place. There are also football pitches, skate parks and a roller skating rink close by for easy outings. Other easy outings include the trip to Terrington St John (two miles away) for a restaurant, a pub and a fish and chip shop. A local shop is also within walking distance – handy for snacks, drinks and bits for a barbecue back at your pitch. On-site facilities include a washing-up area and chemical disposal point as well as a full amenities block with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.

What customers say

Owners and facilities are a hit! Lovely lake and animals. Some guests noted kennel noise, though management says it's out of their hands.

Liked We received a very warm welcome upon arrival. The site was very clean, as were the facilities (especially the family bathroom). The animals were a hit with our daughter and the fishing was also good fun.

Disliked The noise from the nearby kennels. It’d be great if customers were offered complimentary ear plugs upon arrival.

Liked Fishing and people met were lovely.

Disliked Granted you can't choose your neighbours but having a full kennels right next door with dogs allowed to bark all night until they finally get bored of barking is not the place for me or my family. The owners are friendly and reasonable and the fishing made up for what was an extremely stressful night. In future I will read the reviews more carefully.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed the fishing 🎣 and found people here lovely.
It’s a shame that since you gave us really great scores for: value for money, facilities and activities, customer service and child friendliness that you then decided to leave us a poor overall score.
Unfortunately even though we went above and beyond and tried our very hardest to make your stay with us great we were never going to be able to because:
1) You failed to arrive for the first night of your booking because it was raining 🌧️ at another campsite that you was staying at and you didn’t wish to pack up in the rain - hardy our fault and we are afraid that the weather is beyond our control. When you finally did arrive your booking was still honoured and you were still given a choice of pitch even though it was a busy bank holiday weekend.
2) You emailed us at 11.33pm at night and then complained that we didn’t respond to your email straight away - sorry but we don’t have dedicated office staff working at midnight. We do however, have staff on call and available 24 hours a day on site as you know when you spoke with them in person just after midnight to ask why we hadn’t replied to your email.
3) You complained of noise off site - lorries of gravel being tipped and dogs barking at past midnight and continuing all night. No other campers raised any issues when this report was checked with them the following morning. When staff checked the site during the night all was quiet and when site CCTV was reviewed the next day the sound recordings from the cameras clearly evidenced all sound - you speaking with staff, owls hooting, the occasional dog barking and cars driving by on the road. (In case of query CCTV recordings have been digitally saved).
4) You and your children decided to go fishing but wilfully chose to ignore the basic rules of our lake which are clearly signposted at both entrances. As a good will gesture we did not charge fishing fees for your children and even allowed you to break our normally strict rule on the compulsory use of unhooking mats or cradles to land fish by - letting you use a towel instead so as your children were not disappointed by being unable to fish.
Across the whole of the bank holiday weekend you was the only person who raised any issues and in hindsight when you failed to show for your first nights booking we should have cancelled the remainder of your stay and reallocated it to another customer which we would have been entitled to do.
If our site was as indeed as awful as you suggest why would you choose to spend a whole day fishing on site when you could have gone somewhere where else?
In all honesty we believe that your whole intention was to try and receive a totally free stay with us because money was constantly being mentioned by yourself and considering the fact that we did not make you pay for the night that you booked but did not arrive for, or for your children’s fishing you did in actual fact very nearly manage to obtain a completely free holiday.

Liked Facilities are clean and tidy at all times.
Lovely couple to chat to, including spending time talking to our 2 boys.
Lots for the kids to explore - animals and park onsite. Our two loved walking round to the animals in the morning and going round saying night night to them before bed time.
Plenty of room to pitch our tent alongside our friends
A really lovely, friendly, quiet, clean and tidy campsite would recommend!

Liked Very welcoming owners, nothing to much trouble. Everywhere was clean and tidy. Husband loved the fishing and was safe for grandson to play. The disabled shower was a bonus. Open all year round.

Disliked The noise from Kennels near by but got used to it. Don't follow car sat nav the phone was better

Liked Booked a little last min weekend - we only live 40 mins but the min we got there felt like a million miles away. Great site, wonderful hosts very personable and a perfect little spot.

Clean facilities, has everything you could want and a small site which is well maintained and obviously a labour of love.

Fishing was good - hubby enjoyed his day with multiple catches.

Traveled with 2 adults, 1 x 18yro and 1x 13yro although lots of younger children having the best time.

All in all we will 100% be back

Disliked We had a bit of an issue with ants but keep things off the floor and in boxes and all is good - hosts can’t help the wildlife 🫣 just pre warning.

Local attractions

If you can bear to leave the fishing and wallabies behind for a while, you can set out to explore places like Wisbech (15 minutes), home to a swimming pool, a couple of cinemas and the historic houses Peckover House and Octavia Hill’s Birthplace House. King’s Lynn (20 minutes) is another option, with a couple of museums and the 11th-century museum. Kids can’t get enough of the animal antics on site? There’s more of a similar ilk at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (20 minutes). For more of a grownup outing, set off to Sandringham Estate (half an hour) to roam around the 400-acre country park and gardens and learn more about royal life. And of course who could resist a day at the seaside? Heacham (35 minutes) and Hunstanton (40 minutes) are both excellent places to spend the day, with amusement arcades, rockpooling and watersports to try out. Sea Life Hunstanton is a great option for those who’d like to learn more about marine life.
