  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely location and big pitches. Food was great and friendly service.

Disliked Lack of anywhere to put wash bags or towels in ladies shower block if you just wanted to wash your face/brush teeth. A bench under the ornate mirror and some hooks on the wall would fix this.

From the manager: Hi Lura ,
Thank you for your review and comments , its much appreciated.
Be good to see you again in the future ,
As regards the Slight issue with Hooks on the Walls etc. we will sort some of these out to hopefully make your stay complete ,

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Very friendly, small, low key site in a quiet little valley with swallows swooping over it. We were just doing an overnighter enroute to our holiday further south. The pub had stopped serving food at 8 and we'd arrived late but the bar staff were really helpful, checked with another pub a 10 minute walk away and sent us up there.

Liked What an amazing site absolutely perfect. Couldn’t ask for better. Pub beer garden was outstanding, food was amazing & every staff member was so friendly & happy to accommodate. Entertainment was fantastic. Shower block was spotless, a truly wonderful stay. Best site visited to date. Can’t wait to come back. Excellent value for a weekend away & fantastic check in time to make the most of your first day. Just an amazing weekend. Will be back at this site. WiFi didn’t reach to pitch 12 but had that much fun we noticed for the first time that we didn’t need WiFi or TV.

Liked Very quiet and tranquil, plenty of room in the pitches. lots of wild birds especially the little robin who kept eating the dogs food. Entertainment open mic. Food and drinks were very reasonably priced. Toilets and showers were spotlessly clean.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked Pitch perfect to coin a phrase. We arrived mid week so there was no problem getting a spot. We rang ahead and requested a pitch and the staff were polite, informative and very helpful. It is perfectly situated for a nice ramble down by the canal. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The owner called to see us the next morning, polite, welcoming, and hard at work.

Disliked It is quite a slope driving in with the motorhome. We had to turn just before a bridge and then down the slope, but we managed to get in and back out up the slop without any problems.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
