Charlie Bassetts: Lovely views from site

General

  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds

Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem.

See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent.

Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background.

When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. It opens from lunchtime till late seven days a week, but full English breakfasts are available on request for lining the stomach ahead of days out at popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour).

And as for those essential amenities on base? Toilets are available to use in the pub and a shower and toilet block is set up on site as well.

Small simple site, friendly staff and a decent pub27/06/2022

Nice chilled site without a million and one rules, it's basic which we like and is attached to a pub! The toilets are clean and there is more to be built once these are done you really cannot complain.

They have a small selection of animals, a play area and a large field for kids to play.

It is on a slight incline so if you're in a van the levelling ramps may be needed, we were on the first level of ours so not terrible.

The pub is nice with decent food and allows dogs in.

They allow you to have fires and the pitches are spacious.

    Disliked:

No real dislikes as speaking to the owner they plan to sort them, but for clarity of other posts, there is one toilet and a toilet and shower room, but they plan to build more and you can use the pub toilets.

Lovely, welcoming, friendly site. Perfect for families and also couples alone, as we will be going back next week just as a couple.
The site is very well kept, bins onsite were emptied on a continual basis.
Toilets and shower blocks were immaculate.
We were pitched next to the children's play area which was great as they were in view all the time.
Site owner introduced himself and came to check how our stay was, which I think is a very personal touch and was lovely.
Although we didn't eat at the pub on site the meals that we saw looked absolutely amazing, we will be indulging on our next visit.
Really strong WiFi signal too. Fantastic!

Lots of young families enjoyed the animals and play area. We were taken to an area with other couples and enjoyed a nice quiet stay. Beautiful area, lots of lovely walks and plenty of places to visit. We are going back with friends next time. 😃

Lovely pitch.. water and electric on each pitch (where booked)

Staff were excellent, both friendly and efficient, Pub has lovely food and an excellent range of beers.

Good facilities and the grounds are well kept and the facilities are clean and tidy.

Will definitely book here again !

    Disliked:

Not a dislike.. but an observation

Some of the pitches require quite a bit of levelling... remember wedges etc. !

From the manager...

Thanks Duncan,
Great review and score much appreciated,
For us this is a new venture and a new site so any observation by people who now what they are on about is good for us .
We are looking to improve our site at the end of the year to help with some levelling but i think as you say the wedges sort it out on odd pitch's here and there WHEN REQUIRED .
Thank again from Team Charlies

We stayed as a group of 10 and managed to break our electric on the first night. However Tom was super helpful and got us back up and running in no time thank you! The animals, park and football pitch the kids absolutely adored. I would recommend to make better use of the animals we stayed at another campsite who advised you of the animal feeding times so the kids could join in and it stopped silly campers from trying to feed the animals anything they shouldn't have :-)

We ate in the pub on the Saturday and on the phone was advised we had the table for the evening however upon arrival we were rushed and told they needed the table back for 7. However we didn't mind too much as the staff were very friendly and the children were restless so we went back to the tent for some much needed rest. The food in the pub was delicious and we also had fathers day breakfast there. Both were lovely and left us wanting even more. Would definitely recommend others to stay here for a family fun weekend!

    Disliked:

Staff were courteous and efficient but not especially welcoming. Gate was locked and whilst we had code it felt a little shut in. Also we felt it was overpriced at more than £30 for a non-electric pitch. So nice but not brilliant.

From the manager...

Hi Joanne ,
Thanks for the Good review etc.
The security on the Gate is i am, afraid due to not so nice people has yourselves coming on with out paying causing aggravation to others etc.
These days we have to put these things in place so i hope you understand .
I will speak to the staff about the welcoming issue .
If you could call me, i can have a natter as well if you like .

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too.

If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees.

Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
