General

  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Play area, wifi and fishing; food and drink served at the pub

Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem.

See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent.

Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background.

When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. It opens from lunchtime till late seven days a week, but full English breakfasts are available on request for lining the stomach ahead of days out at popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour).

And as for those essential amenities on base? Toilets are available to use in the pub and a portaloo is set up on site as well.

Myself and my partner have booked a one night stay at this site while we were travelling to see family, we had seen on the website that check-in was from 10:30onwards And we had arrived at 18:30,Upon arrival we straightaway noticed that the sites looked very rundown grass overgrown and there was nowhere for us to check-in, we believed that we had to check in At the pub I was there was no where else to check-in, the pub was closed with all lights off and we had nowhere to stay for the night, we attempted to ring the number that was given to us upon booking the site and after four rings the call was never picked up, they made absolutely no attempt to call us back and we were left stranded for the night with nowhere to stay, not only that I have had no contact from them ever since and I am now out of pocket for booking this site, definitely would not recommend

The pub itself seemed nice and friendly.
Outdoor park area and ststiinary tractor for kids to play on as well as an abundance of grass.

    Disliked:

There is very little even ground here. All caravans were heavily chocked on one side to get even.
Facilities are dirty. They weren't cleaned once in the 24 hour period we were there. Appauling considering the current climate.

Great friendly campsite in a large field, behind a pub. Great for friends and groups and families.
Host Sam, was very friendly and hospitable, price was great value (£10 per tent not persons) compared to a lot of campsites with a pub.
We managed to get in when a lot of other sites were fully booked and still the field was almost empty. Had a great time with friends, fire pits and music allowed as field large and we didn't disturb anyone. We would definitely would go again.

    Disliked:

The facilities on site, were mobile toilets (clean), but no showers. Which would limit people to a one night stay.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too.

If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees.

Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.

Must see

  • Royal Doulton Factory Shop, Trentham (8.3 kilometers)
