Charlie Bassetts: Sit out in the pub garden

General

  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Play area, wifi and fishing; food and drink served at the pub

Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem.

See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent.

Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background.

When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. It opens from lunchtime till late seven days a week, but full English breakfasts are available on request for lining the stomach ahead of days out at popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour).

And as for those essential amenities on base? Toilets are available to use in the pub and a portaloo is set up on site as well.

view was beautiful, electric pitch, things not far away to do, we tried the monkey sanctuary 20mins away and we loved it as an hour or so away, lots of families on site for the children to play with. Food was OK burger was a bit overcooked but eatable. Staff were friendly.

    Disliked:

Campsite is for families and a group of young adults turned up (normally festival season for young ones ) and was so loud until 430 in a morning had 2 hours sleep on first night, the pub did do a patrol around 1230 am as other campers complained as rules are no music after 11pm.... music until around 1.30am next night, this is only thing that ruined our weekend. But all in all would possibly return. Ourside Toilets was dirty but that was due to people not respecting the cabin throwing toilet roll on the floor. Needs a good mopping. Just need more patrolling through night

Scenery, fresh air and near by churches and villages. (All off site except air)
The pub itself is very nice, the beer is of good quality and very reasonably priced. Maybe camp somewhere else and just go to their pub because that is definitely a thumbs up

    Disliked:

owners dogs running riot. In and out of car and tent when trying to pack up. Trying to steal food. Emptying clothes and toys out of bags. Stole kids tennis ball.
Drunk teens/twenties partying till 4 in the morning, managed 2 hours sleep. Owners never once came and told them to be more respectful.
9 year old burned hands on hot water tap in toilet and no loo roll in ladies 1 night. from reading the reviews after we stayed it seems the owners would rather call us liars than address the problems in hand. Feedback should be their ally.

..The food from the pub was awful, warm salad and my steak definitely was not fresh it looked grey. The camping feild was super busy with pitches very close together and campers with 4+ cars around there tents taking up a daft amount of space. Whilst eating outside the pub owners dog came and did a big poop in front of our table and some kids on the park stood in it. We returned a few hours later and said poop was still there, i dont belivie it to be an issue the dogs from the owners milling about but someone needs to be clearing up after them. Quite often there wasnt loo roll in the toilet and could do with more of a welcome when arriving on site just to settle guest's in

Loved the setting, the friendly staff and the animals.
The pub was great and so was the food, we had the pie 🥧 as it was ‘pie night’ , good home cooking at its best. Good value and good sized portions.

    Disliked:

Hard to find something really, the only two minor things would be showers, but there on this, and availability of breakfast but this is a staff issue, as it is country wide, and it’s easy to cook your own 🤓.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too.

If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees.

Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.

Must see

  • Royal Doulton Factory Shop, Trentham (5.1 miles)
  • Wedgwood Visitor Centre (5.5 miles)
  • Alton Towers Resort (6.5 miles)

National Trust

  • The Old Manor (9.5 miles)
