General

  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds

Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem.

See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent.

Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background.

When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. It opens from lunchtime till late seven days a week, but full English breakfasts are available on request for lining the stomach ahead of days out at popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour).

And as for those essential amenities on base? Toilets are available to use in the pub and a portaloo is set up on site as well.

The owners and staff were absolutely lovely and made us feel very welcome. We had meal from the restaurant and the food was beautiful and prices were very reasonable for family of 4. The kids loved the animals including the 2 very friendly cavalier spaniels.

Only one ladies toilet on site luckily we had our own with us.

Set in beautiful countryside with local walks. Pub served very good food- friendly place. Spacious site with good available of ehu

    Disliked:

General air of site not being looked after- no security, grass not cut, toilet not cleaned., no contact with site manager.
We have our own toilet and shower so lack of facilities not a problem but did use the toilet occasionally and it was not cleaned in the 4 days we were there.
No gate to campsite and no one took any details from us when we arrived. Public footpath goes through site so anyone could access it. Safety issues for children playing? No security for vans on site.
The site could be very good with a bit of care and attention. A proper toilet /shower block is planned but it will only be any good if it is cleaned and looked after. The site was not especially cheap (and we paid £18 for 2 little dogs!) so it is reasonable to expect someone paid to look after it. As it was it seemed a neglected add-on to the pub.

From the manager...

Sorry for your issues , You have to report into the Pub on arrival to give your details so not sure what went wrong there. !
The grass is left a bit longer now due to the wet weather or the ground will cut up with traffic. This a field not a full blown Holiday camp site . We could not provide security etc. We have only been open x6 months and are still learning so things will improve .
Proper toilets and shower blocks have to have planing permission so we can only have temp Loos ( Sorry )

Small site in the lovely village of Dilahorn, with animals and pub on-site so not far to go for a nice meal.
Great area if you enjoy a country walk.

    Disliked:

The toilets really let the site down, no toilet paper, and weren't cleaned during our stay. Urine on the floor in the ladies, and dried sick in the men's. Also noticed hand sanitizers empty, in the pub as well.

From the manager...

Hi we are sorry you felt to give this review as you can see all the previous recent reviews have been very good . We have a cleaner in every day to clean the toilets but unfortunately some campers do not respect this a leave a lot of mess.

We liked: the friendly, donkey goats horses country pub and welcoming hosts. It was a lovely place to take our family of all ages and nice and close to Alton towers so we had a great weekend. It was a top site and reasonably priced.

    Disliked:

Only negative was the toilet: there was nothing wrong with it but had been left to disgusting to use on Saturday morning, that’s not the campsites fault but other campers … yukkk!

From the manager...

Thanks for the great score , We try our best to keep on top of the toilet cleaning regime but has you rightly said other camper sometimes do no help the situation . We can only apologies for what you described . Hope to see you again sometime.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too.

If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees.

Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.

Must see

  • Royal Doulton Factory Shop, Trentham (8.3 kilometres)
  • Wedgwood Visitor Centre (8.8 kilometres)
  • Alton Towers Resort (10.5 kilometres)
