  • Park in the grounds of a country inn close to walking footpaths
  • A 20-minute drive from Alton Towers and 25 from the Peak District
  • Meals served at the pub; play area and farm animals in grounds
Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the kids start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime until late every day (just note that on Mondays, there are no main meals served). Breakfast is also available on Friday and Saturday mornings, from 9am to 11.30am. And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Liked Lovely site with beautiful views and a very warm welcome. Our pitch had electric and water, hard standing with a grass area and a picnic bench and parasol if required. Sadly we were only there 1 night and didn’t get chance to go into the pub but it did look very nice. We would highly recommend and will definitely book again but this time for a longer stay.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Well lit
Pitch is sizeable and well defined
Dogs required to be on lead but there is a free running field
New shower and toilets. Only one in men's but it's a small site (hence 9/10)
Pub is next to site.
Free WiFi
Friendly owner and staff.

Disliked Not much to dislike.. there's the possibility in summer that the garden will be very busy and noisy, maybe into the late evening. It was quiet midweek when we were there, however.

Liked The bar having football on

Disliked Church bells ringing pretty much all day on Saturday. Not very peaceful. I had paid for 2 nights and couldn’t handle staying the second night. I left after 1 night. Sorry I expected it to be worse on Sunday.

From the manager: Wow Really ,
Were you coming From ???
But you may be right !!
The Historic Church Bells in our Beautiful Village Can be Over Whelming for some people Especially when they are for someone's Special Wedding
Day On a Saturday as these were 😉
I suppose this did not "APEEL" to you 😀

But i am very glad you found a rowdy FOOTBALL MATCH your thing on TV
FOR YOUR BRIEF STAY WITH US ,

But regardless

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked The site itself was lovely and clean, gorgeous scenery. Facilities were nice and clean. The pub on site serves great food, staff friendly. Shops and takeaways about 5 minutes drive away. Have stayed here before a few years ago and it has all been done up since. Had a spacious pitch with picnic bench and umbrella if needed.

Disliked There was nothing really to dislike apart from the family opposite were playing cricket, hitting the ball towards our caravan and car, running around our pitch and other pitches to retrieve the ball, no pitch etiquette whatsoever!!

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
