Charlie Bassetts, a family-friendly site in the grounds of a fab pub (closed on Mondays) serving up homemade food and tasty ales, is a place many of the smart folk who’ve visited quite rightly deem a hidden gem. See for yourself by settling down at this destination in Dilhorne, 20 minutes from the rides at one of Britain’s best theme parks, Alton Towers, and the aquatic antics at Waterworld. It's in an easy-access section of Staffordshire, just off the A50 road and 15 minutes' drive from Stoke-on-Trent. Popular Peak District towns like Buxton (25 minutes) and Bakewell (an hour) are easy to get to too. Rather roams over rollercoasters? Potter through the Peak District (25 minutes) – there are plenty of pretty paths over yonder as well as closer to the site if you’d rather not drive. Ambles are to be had in the grounds too, over by the farm animals or to the play area, where mums and dads are regularly seen supervising the kids in front of a scenic background. When the tiddlers start to get peckish, stroll over to the inn for food. The pub is open from lunchtime till late every day but Monday (there are no breakfasts available). And what about those essential amenities of life? The site has separate ladies' and gents' toilet blocks with showers, as well as a washing-up area.

Liked Great spot, helped us to pitch near to a family member, grass pitch with electric easy to set up. Did need levelers under the wheels but that absolutely fine, it’s a field after all!

Ate in the pub with family who live locally and the bar staff worked absolutely non stop, it was a busy Saturday night with football and cricket on the big screen but they were attentive, polite and an absolute credit to the business.

Toilets were spotless, in fact by the time I got up on Sunday morning they’d already been cleaned again.

Absolutely can’t fault the place at all. Thank you

Liked Size of pitch with electric and water.

Disliked Sloped site and noise from pub also had another van 2 meters behind over a hedge that had a noisy dog. Male toilet was flooded.

I think you may have been unlucky to be near a Barking Dog But we were not informed about this so could not do anything to assist ,
Toilets now and again can get Abused/ floods caused etc. but has you and others can see reading this review that other reviews say completely the opposite ? infact it is one of our main likes ?? 😜
At least you liked the size of the Pitch and Water + Lecy on every Pitch

Liked The site boasts an excellent layout and is welcoming to dogs, offering pleasant views. It is attached to a charming pub.

While it may not have been our personal preference, we recognize that many would appreciate its family-friendly atmosphere, excellent play area, lively music, and sports broadcasts on large screens. It would certainly be an ideal spot for those who enjoy a festive environment.

Disliked We attempted to order takeout pizza from Charlie Bassett's pub on Friday evening, but were informed that the waiting time would exceed an hour. On Saturday, we tried to reserve a table for Sunday lunch, only to be told it was fully booked, which is understandable. However, we were also informed that pizza would be available until 6 p.m., so we planned to arrive earlier on Sunday since we missed out on Friday. Unfortunately, when we inquired about takeout pizza at 5 p.m. on Sunday, we were told that the chef had decided to discontinue service.

We also had to request the code for the barrier, and were informed that it was included in our welcome text, which we found not to be the case.

Liked This campsite strikes a great balance – small enough to feel personal, with friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere, but large enough to offer all the facilities you need. The owners clearly take pride in the place, and everything is well maintained and thoughtfully looked after. Having a pub on site is a real plus, and it adds to the experience rather than taking away from it. The surrounding countryside provides some lovely views and makes it a great place to unwind.

Local attractions

This is an ace base for trips to Alton Towers (20 minutes’ drive) for folk who fancy riding rollercoasters like the Nemesis and Oblivion. Spend one day scampering among the top-class attractions here, then slow things down the next with countryside explores. The Peak District National Park (around 25 minutes) is full of walking paths, while other spots like Trentham Gardens (20 minutes) are top for traipsing round too. If checking out cheeky creatures is more your bag, head to Trentham Monkey Forest (20 minutes) and wander among the free-roaming animals. Around 140 Barbary macaques live in the woodlands and meadows here – make sure to look up and spot them swinging through the trees. Once you’ve snapped pics of the primates, set your sights on some of the market towns scattered around the area. Stone, a settlement on the Trent and Mersey Canal (15 minutes), is well-regarded for its food and drink options, while Cheadle (55 minutes), just outside the wood-covered Churnet Valley and the scenic Staffordshire Moorlands, is worth stopping in too.
