Sunset at Colemere

General

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools

Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you.

Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. (Wild swimming is possible at the reserve too.)

Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only).

Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Please note

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Reception is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The kitchen facilities are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Open fires are only permitted when using firepit kits from the site.

Only one person will be allowed in the toilet/shower block at a time.

Wasn’t a private hot tub expensive at £40 hire and have to pay for a fire pit also for £15 per night. Most huts supply a small stove also , bbq provided was filthy

From the manager...

Thank you for the 10/10 review! 😊

We always ensure guests are made aware of our costs for hot tub hire and fire pits before they purchase them from us We take into account the costs for gas used to heat the hot tub , as it takes 1 1/2 hits to fill, plus insurance, fire wood, fire baskets etc

We do appologise that the bbq was sub standard , as this had been left prior, and should of been removed.!
Our communal kitchen is closed due to the pandemic presently so we are limited to what we can offer regarding cooking facilities to our guests .

However there are many pubs and restaurants in the area that are offering a take-away food service from their menu’s and some with a delivery service.

Hope this is reassuring as all we try to do is aim to please our guests in hoping they have a great stay with us .

Kindest regards
Ingrid & Dave

The location is in the heart of the countryside with the lake a short walk away. Beautiful woodland walks around the lake and the canal walk takes you through two & tow path tunnel (use your phone torch - its dark!) bridges to Colemere Town, marina and supermarket.
The site owner is friendly and helpful.
We booked the Scandinavian hot tub for our arrival evening which is a great experience.

Facilities was clean and well set out. Shepards hut was clean and had everything you need, was great that the pods and hut are well spaced apart unlike some other campsites.

Some lovely walks along the canal and lakes.
Toilets and showers clean and the showers were hot.

    Disliked:

Nothing to dislike but a couple of suggestions:
Need extra hooks in the shower to hang things on whilst shaving etc.
An extra road sign would be helpful as we were not the only ones to get lost.

Thanks for the review !
The distance to the amenities is approx 100m away from the camping pitches . We are not allowed to put amenities in that field due to planning and with it being of special scientific interest (SSI) in the area we are prohibited to put any thing on there.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour.

On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds.

The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere.

Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too.

If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach.

By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
