General

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools

Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you.

Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. (Wild swimming is possible at the reserve too.)

Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute-looking social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and barbecues are available for free use.

Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

People with severe walking difficulties should refrain from booking this site.

Open fires are only permitted when using firepit kits from the campsite.

What a stunning place . Lovely setting right next to Colemere . Lovely owners who are very welcoming and friendly and extremely helpfull. This site is very well managed and they cant do enough to keep you happy. We did have a noisy group next to us the first night , we rang the owner and it was dealt with very well and very proffessionally , so I take my hat off to the owner . Facilities are immaculate and very clean . There are two spotless porto loos in the camping field . There are very nice camping pods here if you dont want the hastle of setting up yourself , all have propper beds and a TV . Locally there is plenty to see/ do especially walks , lots of nature . The dawn chorus onsite is spectacular. Walk around the lake is a must but so is good insect repellent!!!!!! The shropshire union canal runs alongside the lake . Ellesmere is the nearest town where there is a good Tesco and lots of places to eat/drink etc .

    Disliked:

Could definately do with another gents shower . The toilet and shower are in together which means no-one can use a sink/ toilet if being used except by using a portoloo . During busy weekends it can involve a wait , a freezer to freeze icepacks would be good along with somewhere to charge a mobile ( to lock up and leave until charged) . Other than these small things everything else was perfect and we would love to rebook . We had a wonderful time . Many Thanks for the kind hospitality

From the manager...

Thanks for your kind comments and we do appreciate the feedback. Just to add that there is a small freezer in the shed by the kitchen area for ice packs sorry this was not brought to your attention . There are also electric points in the kitchen area for guests to use to charge phones etc
We are in the process of adding more amenities this year to our site due to the fact that we have steadily got busier !
Kind Regards
Dave & Ingrid

The hosts and owners David and Ingrid go out of there way to welcome you. good info and handy little map. they even come and check your ok after a while ,to let you get sorted. lovely campsite with a great little communal area to meet up. even has a small fridge and microwave with a few pots pans etc if you need it. Even a TV for those rainy days. well organized with nice homey feel and feminine touches to the shower toilet and communal area. Great atmosphere here with the nature and really friendly owners. They have put some porta loos half way from the main block which is very handy and very clean dispite this hot weather which can make a bad smell, but no very fine and handy. could do with an extra shower for the men, but I had no problems, perhaps on busy weekends it could be an issue. A fantastic stay highly recommended. Great base for exploring the local lakes and canal. PS a great canal walk or kayak a few hundred yards behind the site into Ellesmere. Thanks you Guys for a wonderful stay. Nigel & Sus (the loud one!)....

It's clear from the onset that Dave and Ingrid are really trying hard to make the experience perfect for everyone. The setting is perfect, with the mere just meters away, the wildlife is brilliant (all though we were slightly freaked out by the Fox cubs crying at 3am) and the natural surroundings are perfect.

    Disliked:

Dislike seems to harsh a word as nothing was actually bad, just not 100% right. The bathroom facilities, whilst what's there is nice enough, there just isn't enough. One sink in the ladies is not great if you want to wash your hands whilst someone is brushing their teeth. The social area is a great idea, but it is need of a rethink regarding electric cables and cleanliness. Also please stop piping the radio through the wall, it's irritating.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback we always find this helpful.
Our aim eventually is perfection and we try and pride ourselves in customer satisfaction. Sorry that facilities here were not 100% right for you, the ladies hand basin, our radio that guests normally enjoy especially in the morning! a couple of cables that are neatly fastened to the wall and cleanliness which has never been an issue here before. Please sought previous reviews left by guests that praise our facilities and enjoy the rustic kitchen/social area.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour.

On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds.

The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere.

Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too.

If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach.

By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
