General

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools

Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you.

Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. (Wild swimming is possible at the reserve too.)

Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute-looking social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and barbecues are available for free use.

Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

People with severe walking difficulties should refrain from booking this site.

Open fires are only permitted when using firepit kits from the campsite.

Very clean and cosy facilities and nicely spread out so very private. Every time I went to the loo or kitchen I was the only one there, great! Nice touch was we were given a map and list of things to do locally, we visited the Sun Inn pub as recommended and it was fantastic.

    Disliked:

Would have liked to stay longer but it’s a bit expensive, next time would maybe book the smaller cabin and stay another night.

this caravan site is not what we booked from your web site as we wanted a fully serviced pitch but when we arrived along some very tight country lanes this site was not as your web page had said there was only one level pitch with water and electric hook up no drainage and when we asked the owner he just told us to let it drain into the hedge , i would not recommend this site to any one plus the owner said the site was really for motor homes the only good thing we found. i think that you better change the site details about Colemere

From the manager...

Firstly we would like to apologise for the misinterpretation for a listing for “full service pitch” on Pitch up, which we had wrongly advertised. This was clearly a mistake on our part which has now been corrected on pitch up.

To the law of the letter a full service pitch should have drainage for grey water which our pitches do not have. We have facilities for 8 electric pitches were 4 of them have water connections which can be used and shared by all if need be. We also have facilities for grey water disposal a short distance away from the hook up points, without any direct connection to.

This particular guest was clearly unhappy because of the grey water disposal issue and was given a full refund and left. However this guest was with a group of others on site, were some have been to us on several occasions before ...... they all enjoyed their time here with us.

We would also like to irritate that we have 4 level pitches which are used for camper vans, mobile homes, caravans etc.

Due to the remoteness of the area the road is narrow, but it does have passing places and there are various routes you can take to get to us.

Our site is pretty, quaint, and unspoilt. If you are looking for a flat uniformed field off a road our site is not for you.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour.

On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds.

The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere.

Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too.

If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach.

By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
