General

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools

Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you.

Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. (Wild swimming is possible at the reserve too.)

Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and barbecues are available for free use. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic woodfired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire for four-hour periods (couples only).

Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Please note

This is an adults-only site. Children under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

People with severe walking difficulties should refrain from booking this site.

Open fires are only permitted when using firepit kits from the site.

Everything. Lovely peaceful site which was spotlessly clean. Walks round the mere on your doorstep ( which our black lab loved jumping into ). We will most definitely be back for another visit.

    Disliked:

Leaving ! Our sat nav took us down a very narrow lane getting there and met a very rude driver coming the other way. So don't rely on your sat nav, use the directions from the owners.

From the manager...

Thanks Nigel for the review.

Obviously we have dogs here on a regular basis . All dogs are different and dogs barking rarely happens here! A dogs behaviour is supervised by their owners which we stipulate in our site policy . However on this occasion this was not brought to our attention that there was a problem . As campsite owners we police all concerns and especially noise.
Sorry this was a concern for you on this occasion

Kind regards
Ingrid & Dave

The best glamping site I have ever stayed on. Dave and Ingrid go above and beyond to provide excellent, clean and well maintained pods, toilets and outside kitchen area. In the grounds there is a lovely lake which is beautifully lit and there is everything you could want in the communal outside kitchen area (including nice background music playing).

We have already booked to go back and stay in the yurt! WELL DONE to Ingrid who is constantly ensuring the toilet facilities are spotless and also the well stock ladies toiletries so that if you forget something there is something for you to use (a nice touch).

My first time camping was at Colmere Caravan Park. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this site and would go again without hesitation. It is a lovely, clean friendly site that allows for adults to escape for some piece and quiet.

The owners of the park are extremely helpful and try their best to make sure that you are well looked after. Alongside having excellent facilities, the owners of the club have lots of information on the area for you to enjoy; restaurants, day trips, take away numbers etc.

One of the facilities that all people try to research before booking a site would be the toilets. I can state that the toilets at this site are very clean and the showers are brilliant. Highly recommended site... go for it!

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour.

On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds.

The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere.

Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too.

If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach.

By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
