  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools
Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you. Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire. Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only). Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Everything!! The area traveling into the campsite was beautiful. The moment we entered the site we felt instantly relaxed....just what we needed after a busy week at work. We were greeted by Dave on his red bike and taken to the main house were he gave us a map of the surrounding area, good walks to go on and the best restaurants/pubs to go to. We loved the way the camping pitches where cut into longer grass making designated pitches for each camper. The pitches where a very good size. Enough for our car, a 3man tent and a decent size kitchen/utility tent. The site is a really peaceful, adults only site. The little pond by the main house was tranquil, we could of sat for hours looking at the wildlife. The shared social area was an excellent feature. It was like a little cottage with couches and solid wood long tables and fresh eggs for sale. It has a shared fridge freezer, sink, microwave, kettle etc The toilets and showers were spotless. I particularly liked the cubicle with plugs for ladies styling products and a little basket with things you may have forgotten like shower gel 👌We will 100% be coming back here. 10/10.

Disliked: Leaving 👎

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Pretty location and great facilities. Very basic and wifi is only in the club house bit so you have the option

Disliked: The driveways could do a bit of leveling out as we have a low van that was at risk of scraping the bottom

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is a very well maintained site, the owners work very hard to keep the facilities clean and nicely presented. Although we didn't need to make use of it there is a sheltered area with heaters, tv, fridge, freezer and plenty of seating for guests. It looked rustic and cozy, and there was free WiFi is available. The garden and pond area is very pretty. The fields where tents are pitched was freshly mown during my stay with pockets of long grass and wild flowers. We enjoyed watching the local wildlife, although I'd recommend taking some insect repellent as we were feasted on!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Clean site with very spacious pitches and plenty of green space but also enough split between areas so it was quiet too. Social area worked really well - both to meet people and as a space to have a comfy sofa for a bit, and use the fridges etc. Clean toilets, well maintained. Location was good - direct access to the lake for a good walk round it, with lovely views. 2 mile walk along canal into Ellesmere - so doable for a trip out for lunch or whatever. Fire pits and wood provided was good. Adult only.

Disliked: Could only get Wifi in social area. The toilet/shower area is quite small and if it was cold I feel it would be quite cold in there. Not a major issue, and it was lovely and clean and perfectly fine, but just different to some of the bigger sites with large, underfloor heated shower areas. The lane to get to the site is very narrow - especially if you come from one direction - again not a major issue and it is mentioned on the web site, but it really was very narrow and I am quite a nervous driver - will not stop me going back though. Ellesmere is walkable but if you wanted easier access to a pub for an evening drink I don't think I would walk the 2 mile back along the canal - but fine for earlier in the day.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful little campsite with everything you could need. Cute onsite clubhouse even thinks of those little things you might have forgotten with the added bonus of fresh eggs to purchase for breakfast. Next to a beautiful lake that goes directly into the local village too which was perfect for lovely walks with our pup. Had a great time.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour. On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds. The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere. Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too. If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach. By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
