Colemere Caravan Park: Autumn view at Blakemere

General

  • Lakeside park in a wildlife haven on five acres of grassland
  • Dog friendly with woodland walks; hot tub to hire
  • A few minutes' walk from a nature reserve with fishing pools

Grownups! If you seek serenity, scenery and nature-spotting on holiday, this is the Shropshire site for you.

Adjacent to the mere of Colemere and set on the lake's south side, adults-only Colemere Caravan Park is in a countryside setting on five acres of wildlife-laden land with peaceful walks all around – and a quarter of a mile from Wood Lane nature reserve, which the expert folk at the BBC describe as one of the best birdwatching sites in Shropshire.

Owners Dave and Ingrid have put a lot of thought into ensuring that guests are kept comfy at this peaceful and popular little site: as well as a good range of accommodation options, guests have access to a fully-equipped and cute social area, all hand-built and including a kitchen with fridge, kettle, utensils, pots and microwave. Firepits are available on request and guests can bring their own barbecues. And for keeping toasty after that, a Nordic wood-fired hot tub overlooking the lily pond is available to hire in the afternoons and evenings for four-hour periods (couples only).

Picnic tables are dotted around to place the campfire food on, and the park has well-kept separate bathrooms for ladies and gents.

We liked this site straight away from arriving. As you come through the gate you can see a nice little pond and there is another one a bit father away. The grass was cut short enough. This site has a beautiful reception area where you can sit and relax talking to other people or watching TV or even warming up your meal. There are quite a few things to borrow if you forgot something at home. There was an information about where you can go for the meal or order take away. The owner provided map with information about local attractions. For additional charge you can get the logs with the lig burner or to hire a hot tub. Maybe it was a bit pricy, but at least you needn't to go anywhere to get it . The toilets and showers are clean. We liked that we could choose the pitch between 3 what were available at that moment. We wish there were a bit more electric pitches as ones what we liked the most were non-electric) But our was good as well. We chosen one on the site what looked more like the wild camping site, because there were much less people. Size of the pitches was good, especially non-electric. The ground was a bit uneven, but, you can always find a level patch for putting the tent. There were plenty trees and bushes what divided site into parts, so people could have some sort of privacy. This site is far away from the main roads and farms, so, it was really quiet there. And we enjoyed it very much. There were plenty of rubbish bins and the never been overfull during our stay. Just a couple of minutes from the site there is a beautiful walkway around the lake. In the evening you could see the little rabbits jumping here and there. It was so relaxing. We would certainly like to come here again and stay for a bit longer.

What an incredible campsite! Quiet, peaceful, beautiful, well-kept. The reception area is a great place to relax in the evenings, with sofas, tables to sit at, books, a TV as well as a fridge/freezer, kitchen utensils etc. The toilets and showers were amazing too, hot water, very clean. There are lots of nice walks around the lakes too.

We both loved everything about our brief visit to Colemere …09/19/2022

We both loved everything about our brief visit to Colemere Caravan Park. We had a couple of questions prior to booking, which were answered promptly and very helpfully by the owner David.

On arrival at Colemere we were greeted by David who explained how Colemere worked, told us what was nearby and gave us a map of the location so we didn't miss anything. He then got on his bike and showed us around the Park so we could pick the pitch that suited us best.

There were loads to choose from, some more isolated than others and we picked one on a raised area virtually surrounded by Christmas trees.

There is loads of walking from the site, on our first day we had a pleasant stroll around Colemere itself and saw ducks, swans and geese around the mere. On the second day we walked to the town of Ellesmere along the Canal towpath seeing canal boats on the way. Ellesmere itself was a little disappointing, we didn't expect most of it to be closed on a Saturday. We did find a lovely Restaurant/Pub called The Boathouse, which overlooked the Mere at Ellesmere and it was a fantastic place for our lunch. Great service, great food and a lovely view.

All to soon it was time for us to leave Colemere Caravan Park and make the journey home, but we definitely plan to return.

Local attractions

There's stacks to do in the surrounding area, whether you want to stick close to home by foot or pedal, or drive a bit further afield to the towns, tourist attractions and landscapes of Shropshire, Cheshire and north-east Wales – the city of Chester is 40 minutes away and Llangollen on the River Dee reachable within an hour.

On the doorstep, tackle the two-mile walk along the canal towpath to Ellesmere or make your way via the purpose-built circular walk and through a wooded area of rhododendrons around the mere and nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest with species galore to see like otters, lapwings and water birds.

The reserve also has several deep fishing pools well-stocked with catfish and big carp; more fishing – and carp – can be had nearby at Blackmere along the towpath from Colmere.

Also nearby, wander into Colemere village to see the fifteenth-century thatched cottages, listed in the Domesday Book, to Ellesmere for food festivals, regattas and boat rides on the mere, or drive to Rednal Karting, Paintballing and Laser for an exciting time ten minutes away. Castles including Chirk and Whittington are a doddle to drive to too.

If being on the water is your thing, a narrowboat marina is a three-minute drive away from the caravan park and both Colemere and Whitemere sailing clubs are within easy reach.

By car, the standard of whitewater rafting at Bala Adventure and Watersports will have you foaming at the mouth – a milder form of the sport, along with abseiling, gorge walking, a steam railway and horse-drawn boat trips is available over the border in Wales at Llangollen.
