General

  • Small family-run site near Church Stretton
  • In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with three fishing lakes
  • Air rifle range and play area on site; firepits available to hire

Retreat to Oaklands Leisure and Fishery for quiet midweek escapes or peaceful weekends away in spectacularly scenic surroundings among the south Shropshire hills, on a base for long woodland walks, countryside cycling and castle exploring.

And fishing: Oaklands has a two-acre lake well stocked with mirror and common carp up to 20lbs, and a three-quarters of an acre pool holding a mixed bag of mirror and common carp up to 7lbs, as well as a few trout up to 5lbs (if you catch one have it on the campfire for supper, for a cost of £10 per fish taken). The pool is a good spot for beginners and juniors; tuition is available on site subject to availability and if booked in advance.

The site is set on 35 acres of fields, 10 minutes' drive from the popular and heathery hills of the Carding Mill Valley, and from the pubs, cafés, restaurants and supermarket of the local town of Church Stretton. It's dog friendly, but please don't allow your pets anywhere near the lakes.

Friendly and helpful owners Christine and Richard are determined to have the site set up just how guests would want it, and can provide a firepit, a basket of logs and kindling for the campfire.

The cleanly-kept amenities include toilets and two shower blocks; there's also a washing-up area, chemical disposal and the means to charge your electrical bits and bobs.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

We absolutely loved the forest pitch. We loved the space, privacy and peacefulness. The lack of cars around the tent area was so nice and made it safe for the children to play. Loos were clean and the shower was hot. We loved our weekend at Oaklands.

We loved Oaklands, such a lovely scenic place to stay! We were camped by one of the lakes so it was lovely to wake up to this. There are many other pitches by the lakes and in the forest..makes you feel like you’re abroad somewhere! We had a fab, relaxing time :) thank you Christine and your staff!

    Disliked:

Nothing really..there are limited showers but this is due to Covid at the moment. We didn’t have a problem using the shower and facilities.

    Woodland location was beautiful.
    Toilets were pleasant and well-located.
    Staff friendly.

    Disliked:

Showers closed, ostensibly due to Covid. Seeing as this was one of the reasons we chose this site, we were pretty disappointed. They had communicated beforehand that they may have to close amenities, but made it seem like they were likely to be open.

Organisation was a shambles, we had reserved a number of pitches but were just pointed in the direction of the campsite and left to our own devices. No pitch numbers were provided and most pitches had "reserved" signs up but we were given no indication upon arrival of whether we could pitch there or not.

Nowhere to dispose of rubbish on site. We were told to take it with us but were given no useful direction on where to go to dispose of it locally (we were initially directed to a closed recycling centre).

From the manager...

Sorry that you were disappointed with the service that we gave to you and your friends, we clearly got it wrong. However, we did communicate that the showers may have to be closed if misused, which they were. We also advised that all rubbish would have to be removed.

Also 40 minutes away are the Ironbridge museums including Blists Hill, all commemorating the Industrial Revolution and the life and work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Geologists can rock out at Wenlock Edge, the limestone escarpment near Much Wenlock that's a Site of Special Scientific Interest, while anyone who fancies balloon rides over the Shropshire Hills or learning about hilly history should have at least a few hours at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms.
