General
- Small family-run site near Church Stretton
- In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with three fishing lakes
- Air rifle range and play area on site; firepits available to hire
Retreat to Oaklands Leisure and Fishery for quiet midweek escapes or peaceful weekends away in spectacularly scenic surroundings among the south Shropshire hills, on a base for long woodland walks, countryside cycling and castle exploring.
And fishing: Oaklands has a two-acre lake well stocked with mirror and common carp up to 20lbs, and a three-quarters of an acre pool holding a mixed bag of mirror and common carp up to 7lbs, as well as a few trout up to 5lbs (if you catch one have it on the campfire for supper, for a cost of £10 per fish taken). The pool is a good spot for beginners and juniors; tuition is available on site subject to availability and if booked in advance.
The site is set on 35 acres of fields, 10 minutes' drive from the popular and heathery hills of the Carding Mill Valley, and from the pubs, cafés, restaurants and supermarket of the local town of Church Stretton. It's dog friendly, but please don't allow your pets anywhere near the lakes.
Friendly and helpful owners Christine and Richard are determined to have the site set up just how guests would want it, and can provide a firepit, a basket of logs and kindling for the campfire.
The cleanly-kept amenities include toilets and two shower blocks; there's also a washing-up area, chemical disposal and the means to charge your electrical bits and bobs.

Local attractions
This is spectacular countryside, in a highly scenic setting with easy access to peaceful ambles, quiet cycles and historic houses, castles and museums. The heather-covered hills of wildlife haven Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd are close by to mountain bike and hike among smashing views of the Shropshire Hills.
County town Shrewsbury is about 40 minutes' drive away, recommended by the Oaklands Leisure and Fishery crew as the birthplace of famed Salopian man Charles Darwin: take the Darwin Town Trail to investigate further. Also 40 minutes away are the Ironbridge museums including Blists Hill, all commemorating the Industrial Revolution and the life and work of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Geologists can rock out at Wenlock Edge, the limestone escarpment near Much Wenlock that's a Site of Special Scientific Interest, while anyone who fancies balloon rides over the Shropshire Hills or learning about hilly history should have at least a few hours at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms.
