Retreat to Church Stretton Camp and Fish – an independently run campsite and fishery set in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – for quiet escapes on long woodland walks or countryside bike rides. Set on 40 acres of meadows, woodland, brooks and lakes, it’s 10 minutes’ drive from pubs, restaurants and shops in Church Stretton, and heather-covered hills in the Carding Mill Valley.

And don’t forget the fishing. The site has three fishing lakes suitable for any level of skill, well-stocked with multiple varieties of carp of 20lbs and above, as well as sturgeon, bream, perch, roach, trout and gudgeon. The on-site shop sells camping and fishing essentials (including bait); you can also hire rods and tuition is subject to availability.

Even if you’re not a mad-keen angler, there’s plenty to do on site. Other sporty amenities include a wild-swimming lake, where you can also kayak or paddleboard, as well as a rifle range (with rifle hire). And kids can whizz around on electric quad bikes (hire charges apply), or run off energy on the trampoline, swings and slides in the play area.

Modern amenities include several shower and toilet blocks (please note there is no hot water on site, apart from in the showers), water points and washing facilities. There is also a communal area for charging your devices.

The friendly site owners actively encourage open fires. Free firepits are provided and you can buy firewood at competitive prices (please do not bring your own wood onto the site).

Thank you for the review, glad you enjoyed your stay and the site. There's approximately 7 dedicated water taps on site (not including taps in toilet blocks), there was one actually a stones throw from where you were camping. However we do accept that signposting visitors to these taps could be much better, and for that we apologise. We hope to have printed maps of the site produced soon, which will be given to guests upon arrival, as we acknowledge that we need to make it easier for visitors to understand all the facilities we have on site and where they are located.     On arrival, the 2 gentleman that greeted me couldn't have been more helpful. They suggested near by walking routes and informed me of additional resources such as firewood that I could buy. They clearly recognised that I was a first time camper and ensured that I was prepared for a night in the woods taking into consideration the high winds forecast for that night.
    The wild forest pitch was as close to wild camping as you can get. Obviously when you book in January you'll expect the site to be pretty sparse however; the pitching sites where well spaced so I would expect that even in the warmer months you'll be a good distance from any neighbours.
    Unfortunately I arrived following heavy rainfall, so some of the walks were cut off due to flooding however; if you check your OS maps there are plenty of trails worth exploring.
    The toilet facilities were very clean until I trailed my dirty boots though them (for which I apologise).
    On leaving the guys were just as helpful and I look forward to returning with my kayak for use on one of the lakes within the grounds.
    A thoroughly enjoyable stay. See you soon.

Thanks Sean, i'm glad the team were helpful, especially as you are new to camping. we are fortunate given the size of our site, that campers are indeed spaced a reasonably good distance from one another in most pitches (especially the woods and meadow). The week you came it was indeed exceptionally wet due to all the heavy rain we had, i'm glad you didn't let it dampen your spirits though (and don't worry about the muddy footprints in the toilet, if we had a pound for every muddy footprint we'd be rich lol).

Look forward to hopefully seeing you again now the weather is getting better.

    Loved That you can camp in the woods and have a fire. Not many places offer that and gives a great sense of proper camping and wildness without being in the true wild.

    Really great camping site with lovely views. Everything was clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The campfire is a must have later in the year. Overall, we had a wicked stay and would highly recommend.

    I found this campsite by chance and am so glad I did! It's such a beautiful campsite, I really can't find fault. We chose a lakeside pitch, despite not fishing, it was so nice to be right next to the water.

    We were blessed with glorious weather so spent most of our time lounging around outside the tent, walking around and exploring the site. The woodland is beautiful with more little ponds and lakes to explore and even woodland camping pitches that give you a true wild camping feel.

    The facilities are super rustic, which is fine by us, we take all of our own things with us including camp loo etc. which we empty once home. When we did use the facilities there, they were basic, but perfectly clean.

    The location is great, with lots to do in under half an hours drive. We spent a day out in Ludlow (Ludlow Farm Shop is brilliant) but it's also not far away from places like Ironbridge.

    The team there was super friendly and welcoming and the other campers and folks fishing were all really friendly, helping to give the site a lovely warm and chilled vibe.

    I stayed for one night and it was brilliant. The woodlands were quiet and devoid of rubbish. Toilets were clean and the shower was hot. The hosts were very friendly and helpful and I will be coming back with my family next time for sure. Looking forward to returning.

    The pitch was really nice , right in the woods at the back of the big fishing lake( no electricity). The owner and the staff are very friendly and helpful. For £5 (cash) we had a box of wood and fire starters, there is a fire pit available. Toilets and showers in two separate areas of the site. A little shop with essentials and soft drinks is right at the main entrance..

    a unique place where you can spend time in harmony with nature. It has 3 fish ponds and 1 swimming hole. A large selection of places for a tent (by a pond, in a clearing, in the forest). Perfect places for a trip to the nearby mountains

    The only small disadvantage is the toilets and showers, the quality could be better although it is a camping site and not a 5 star hotel. Nevertheless, I will definitely go back there.

Thank you for your feedback, and specifically your acceptance: We believe our prices are relatively cheap (from £20 a night) and many other campsites don't offer showers at such a price, and we do our utmost to ensure the showers and toilets are of an acceptable standard, but accept (as you say) they are not 5* facilities (nor do we proclaim to have such facilities). Showers and toilets are cleaned at regular intervals, but we accept during these intervals, they may fall below the standard accepted (if this is the case, please do not hesitate to inform a member of staff).

This is spectacular countryside with easy access to peaceful ambles, quiet cycles and mountain-biking routes. The heather-covered hills of wildlife haven Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (15 minutes’ drive) are close by for meanderings among views of the Shropshire Hills AONB.

County town Shrewsbury (40 minutes) is the birthplace of famed local hero Charles Darwin: take the Darwin Town Trail to investigate his backstory further. The Ironbridge Valley of Invention (half an hour) incorporates museums such as Blists Hill, commemorating the Industrial Revolution, and the pretty market town of Ludlow (25 minutes) has an 11th-century castle to tour as well as a mash-up of Tudor half-timbered houses and elegant Georgian architecture.

Geologists can rock out in Wenlock Edge (20 minutes), ancient woodland covering a limestone escarpment and Site of Special Scientific Interest, while anyone who fancies balloon rides over the Shropshire Hills or learning about their history should have at least a few hours at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (15 minutes).
