  • Cosy family-run and dog-friendly site in the Cotswolds
  • A 15-minute drive from Blenheim Palace; 25 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold
  • Barbecues and firepits allowed; access to footpaths and bridleways
After a cosy spot somewhere in the Cotswolds? Historic houses, museums and market towns are out in full force around the cosy Cotswolds Camping in its Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty six miles from Chipping Norton… to be exact, this family-run site is 15 minutes' drive away from Blenheim Palace and within striking distance of many characteristic Cotswolds trails. At the same time, Oxfordshire is the other way and Oxford itself is just 15 minutes’ train journey away from Charlbury Station (five minutes’ drive). As for those of you with a soft spot for a hardcore shopping trip, you won’t be left in the lurch here, as Bicester Village has a shopping outlet 35 minutes’ drive away and Stratford-upon-Avon is 45 minutes’ drive away for handsome riverside scenes and independent shops. Now, how about those hiking shoes? Well, the site has access to fancy footpaths, bridleways and woodland walks, so you’ll be able to get right to the rambling. You might want to stop by the local village, Charlbury, on your way around the local area, as there are food shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants here, all within walking distance of the site. And don’t worry, you’ll be able to carry the good time onto the site, as barbecues and firepits are both permitted – the same for dogs. As for the facilities you’ll have on hand, these include a play area, shower, toilets and a dishwashing area to help you deal with any dirty pots and pans.

Liked: Facilities were clean

Disliked: No welcome as such l had to find my way in the dark after a) tripping over diy equipment to use the walkie talkie which went unanswered b) was given vague instructions which were not useful as it was pitch black. The person were « spending time with their cat » was the reason for their tardiness. Friends were unable to stay in their gypsy caravan as it was wet inside and did not have a door (very cold in October - admittedly « should not have been made available at this time of year ». They are still trying to get their money back as they both had to stay in my campervan for the night!

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The very nice warden who was super-helpful and friendly. The toilets and shower were very clean and there was plenty of hot water. The campsite was quiet and easy to find. The kitchen area was good and had useful appliances.

Disliked: No loo rolls were provided in the toilets. Whilst this was the policy, it is very annoying to keep on having to remember your own roll, and there is nowhere to put it in the loo, so it is far from ideal. If the reason is that people keep removing the rolls, then there are dispensers that other sites use to reduce this behaviour and provide a better service to their clients. The press button showers and taps are set to be hopelessly short. They are 10 seconds in the shower I used, and 5 seconds in the wash basin. This really does not save significant water but is frustrating. 30 seconds in the shower and 20 seconds at the sink would be much better. Remember this Covid ads about washing your hands for at least 20 seconds? The field has a lot of worm casts - very good, except this makes for a lot of mud accidentally going into the campervan. A hard-standing area would improve this, as well as gravel pathways from the pitches.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Site was quite basic, the price was expensive for what was available.

Disliked: I can’t understand why they don’t provide toilet paper when they will sell it to you. I stayed at a £10 a night site that supplied toilet paper and had similar facilities this site was £24 for the night. We were greeted and told what pitch we were on and how to get there. That was it, we weren’t told where the facilities were etc. Site was quite noisy well past 10pm.

Local attractions

Trail time? You might want to begin with the Roman Fosse Way, passing by the towns of Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes' drive) and Moreton-in-Marsh (25 minutes). Or from Lechlade-on-Thames (half an hour), perhaps you'll roll right on to the Thames Path, if you’re not drawn into the water with watersports such as canoeing. Characterful towns and villages are a Cotswolds staple and it shows… Burford (15 minutes) is boxed full of unusual shops, pubs and tea rooms, while in Witney (20 minutes), you’ve got classic entertainment courtesy of a multi-screen cinema, shops and leisure centre mixed in with markets and the historic Cogges Manor Farm. In Woodstock (15 minutes) there’s more history inside The Oxfordshire Museum. Like Chipping Norton (10 minutes), the place has a swimming pool, shops, pubs and tea rooms galore, to add to Chipping Norton’s theatre and cinema. Historic are many of the houses around here, and that includes the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blenheim Palace (15 minutes), the Jacobean Chastleton House (20 minutes) and or the 18th-century Buscot Park (35 minutes). For more activities in the throw of it all, there’s Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (25 minutes) and Bourton-on-the-Water’s equestrian centre, brewery and motoring museum (half an hour).
