Why visit Silverstone?

Home of the British Grand Prix

Located close to the traditional Northamptonshire village with the same name, Silverstone has been home to the British Grand Prix for more than six decades. This world-class venue hosts races, special events and other fixtures throughout the year, plus an interactive museum to fill you in on more than half a century of motorsport history.

If you see yourself as more than just a spectator, there’s a rally school just opposite the racecourse, with self-drive, behind-the-scenes tours and other hands-on experiences also available for fans.

Northamptonshire National Trust properties

Northampton’s reputation for country estates and stately homes means it’s often called the county of spires and squires. Many of these impressive places near Silverstone are now owned by the National Trust, meaning they’re open to the public throughout the year and make fantastic days out.

Within Northamptonshire itself there’s Canons Ashby House, an impressive Elizabethan manor set in 18th-century gardens, and Lyveden New Bield, an unfinished Tudor lodge set in moated grounds. Just to the south in Buckinghamshire, meanwhile, lies Stowe, a spectacular landscaped garden designed by Capability Brown.

Pub walks in South Northamptonshire

Country strolls and pub lunches go hand in hand with happy holidays, and the South Northants area has plenty of such combinations to try out.

Sticking close to home, you could start off at Silverstone’s village pub, The White Horse, before taking a stroll around Bucknell Woods, a nearby nature reserve with hundreds of acres of ancient woodland.

Alternatively, head off to Greens Norton, a pretty village just to the north of Silverstone that’s often compared to the Cotswolds because of its rows of sandstone cottages, or try rambling along the Grand Union Canal until you come across a tempting watering hole…
