- Deliberately rustic camping field on an Oxfordshire canalside pig farm
- Farm shop with sausages, bacon, pork and eggs
- Catering trailer on site serving breakfast and lunch
If you owned a narrowboat, could there be any more crack(l)ing pastime than pulling up to a farm shop on the historic Oxford Canal to pig out on all things pork? Don’t own a narrowboat just yet? Go the whole hog regardless at The Pig Place near Banbury: the range of pig-based products – and pigs – here might make you squeal.
The Pig Place is a working smallholding and campsite next to the Oxford Canal, complete with farm shop stuffed with prime pig products such as traditional sausages, dry-cured bacon and home-produced pork, all from the farm’s rare pedigree breeds of British Lop and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs.
Buy some along with a clutch of free-range eggs for breakfast, or trot along to the catering trailer for a breakfast or/and lunch of bacon and eggs, sausages, roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce, guaranteed to leave you more pot-bellied than when you arrive. The site received a premises licence in 2017 too, so can now sell alcohol for supping on or off site.
Bring your camera to be on the tail of some smoking hot pics here: piglets regularly run around the site and there are native sheep and lambs, geese, ducks and chickens too.
The grassy camping paddock at The Pig Place sits between the livestock area and the vegetable patches – hang about near your pitch at feeding time for more snaps, or turn your gaze waterwards for photos of narrowboats drawing in to stock up at the farm shop.
Facilities at The Pig Place are basic (one portaloo and no showers), but the owners rightly say the attractions on site more than make up for it: whether casting about at the canal (just adjacent to the farm), racing piglets around the site, or seeing just how many sausages it’s possible for you to feast upon, it's very unlikely you’ll be boar-ed...

Terrible customer service skills

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. It is particularly welcome as you were on site at the same time as the two reviews below. Thank you for your understanding when you came to ask why caravans had left site the previous evening in the dark. We’re truly sorry that your evening had been disturbed and we will endeavour to make sure it never happens again on our site :@)
From the manager...
Completely untrue account from this camper. The welcome was not unfriendly – even though arrival was an hour and a half after stipulated on their booking form. We permitted the party (two caravans) to leave both vans on site together with a car (without charge) whilst they ‘popped’ into Oxford. We did not envisage that we would have to contact them at 7.15pm (over eight hours later) to ascertain when they were going to collect the caravans. We also suspected that they had no intention of collecting them as the water containers were still connected and nothing had been cleared down ready for departure. Did they intend to get back to site late at night and then depart early in the morning? – thereby having had a free night’s camping.

This is a review from the second part of the group which overstayed their welcome and our generosity at permitting both caravans and a car to remain on site whilst they ‘popped’ into Oxford for eight hours. They had no comprehension of how caravans arriving and departing in the dark and using car headlights causes disturbance to others on such a small site. They accuse us of being rude and unhelpful because we would not agree to them causing disturbance to others. Their declaration of “we’re on holiday and just want to enjoy ourselves” does not mean they can do that whilst causing inconvenience to others. They will not be permitted to return. The comment about the toilets is merely to gain their pound of flesh and had they arrived in daylight would have found the ground easier to navigate :@(

We are six miles from Junction 10 on the M40. Pick up the A43 towards Silverstone then the B4100 for Aynho. Go through the village and continue along the B4100 past two car garages and past the turn to Kings Sutton. 200 yards past the turn is the entrance to a layby shielded from road by trees. The Pig Place entrance is within the layby.
From the other direction - take the Banbury to Oxford road, the A4260. In Adderbury, turn at the traffic lights onto the B4100, Aynho Road, past Katherine House Hospice and Banbury Golf Club. Approximately half a mile from the golf course is the entrance to the layby. The Pig Place is within the layby.
The Oxford Canal is the oldest mainline canal in England and has walkies all along its 77-mile towpath (borrow one of The Pig Place dogs to escort you along the route), passing some of the most scenic spots and villages in Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. It’s mostly easy hoofing along the whole route with few hills: carve a slice into a day trip or afternoon amble.
Pack a picnic (of bacon sarnies) and go to Banbury four miles away to tackle the modernised towpath walk from Banbury to Cropredy via the newly added glass bridge, waterworks gallery and museum spanning the canal along the way.
If you’re going south to Oxford (and if not, why not?), make time among the spires and museums to trek along the three-mile Oxford Canal Heritage from Hythe Bridge Street to Duke’s Lock on Oxford’s outskirts, or try a portion of the ten-mile part of the Oxford Canal walk to meet the Oxfordshire Way at Kirtlington.
This part of the world is also known for its motorsports, so race along to the only Formula 1 circuit in the UK at Towcester’s Silverstone 20 minutes away and roar around the track in a single seater or Ferrari – or watch how it’s actually done at a Grand Prix event.
Towcester also has a racecourse to see slightly slower competitions at its National Hunt meets between October and May, or, for a very sedate time, spectate around the Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames every summer.
Smart shoppers have the covered markets and Westgate Shopping Centre of Oxford, the boutiques of Henley-on-Thames and the Castle Quay Shopping Centre of Banbury all nearby, but if you’re really determined to bag a bargain make for Bicester and the Bicester Village Designer Outlet less than ten miles from The Pig Place, and the Bicester Avenue Home and Garden Centre just behind it.
Historical highlights are also aplenty driving north-west from The Pig Place to mighty and medieval Warwick Castle and Stratford-upon-Avon, both easily reachable for day trips.
A day or two at dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon should be on the cards in any hol – especially if the Royal Shakespeare Company are performing Ham-let...
