General
- Deliberately rustic camping field on an Oxfordshire canalside pig farm
- Farm shop with sausages, bacon, pork and eggs
- Catering trailer on site serving breakfast and lunch
If you owned a narrowboat, could there be any more crack(l)ing pastime than pulling up to a farm shop on the historic Oxford Canal to pig out on all things pork? Don’t own a narrowboat just yet? Go the whole hog regardless at The Pig Place near Banbury: the range of pig-based products – and pigs – here might make you squeal.
The Pig Place is a working smallholding and campsite next to the Oxford Canal, complete with farm shop stuffed with prime pig products such as traditional sausages, dry-cured bacon and home-produced pork, all from the farm’s rare pedigree breeds of British Lop and Oxford Sandy and Black pigs.
Buy some along with a clutch of free-range eggs for breakfast, or trot along to the catering trailer for a breakfast or/and lunch of bacon and eggs, sausages, roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce, guaranteed to leave you more pot-bellied than when you arrive. The site received a premises licence in 2017 too, so can now sell alcohol for supping on or off site.
Bring your camera to be on the tail of some smoking hot pics here: piglets regularly run around the site and there are native sheep and lambs, geese, ducks and chickens too.
The grassy camping paddock at The Pig Place sits between the livestock area and the vegetable patches – hang about near your pitch at feeding time for more snaps, or turn your gaze waterwards for photos of narrowboats drawing in to stock up at the farm shop.
Facilities at The Pig Place are basic (it has several portable toilets but no showers), but the owners rightly say the attractions on site more than make up for it: whether casting about at the canal (just adjacent to the farm), racing piglets around the site, or seeing just how many sausages it’s possible for you to feast upon, it's very unlikely you’ll be boar-ed...

Local attractions
The Oxford Canal is the oldest mainline canal in England and has walkies all along its 77-mile towpath (borrow one of The Pig Place dogs to escort you along the route), passing some of the most scenic spots and villages in Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. It’s mostly easy hoofing along the whole route with few hills: carve a slice into a day trip or afternoon amble.
Pack a picnic (of bacon sarnies) and go to Banbury four miles away to tackle the modernised towpath walk from Banbury to Cropredy via the newly added glass bridge, waterworks gallery and museum spanning the canal along the way.
A day at dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon should be on the cards in any hol – especially if the Royal Shakespeare Company are performing Ham-let…

Thank you for taking the time to write a review regarding your very brief visit to our campsite.
Upon receipt of your review I carried out an investigation into your experience and was told that the main problem upon your arrival was the discovery that there were no showers on site which greatly upset a member of your party.
The fact that we do not have showers on site is clearly shown in the description of the site on PitchUp and mentioned several times in the reviews, our listing also states that we are not on mains water but have a borehole for drinking water and seven portable toilets.
I particularly object to the "some poor pigs" comment when we clearly state that we are a working smallholding and our pigs are kept in the highest welfare standards.
There was an electric hook up available for you, so stating there was not is complete fabrication.
I believe that your disparaging review is a result of being told that a refund would not be issued for your stay over a bank holiday weekend just because you have not read the site description in full.
