Site pitches

  • Deliberately basic adults-only site on a canalside Oxfordshire farm
  • A 15-minute drive from Banbury and 40 minutes from Oxford
  • Farm shop on site; access to the canal for fishing or watersports
If you owned a narrowboat, could there be any prettier a pastime than pulling up to a farm shop on the historic Oxford Canal? Don’t own a narrowboat just yet? Pull up for an adults-only stay (narrowboat not necessary…) at The Pig Place near Banbury, where groups and dogs are welcome and there's no limit to the number of furry friends that can accompany you. This deliberately basic site is on a working smallholding next to the Oxford Canal, complete with a farm shop where you can buy hot drinks, snacks and cake. The site received a premises licence in 2017 too, so it sells alcohol for sipping on or off site. Bring your camera to be on the tail of some smoking hot pics here: turn your gaze waterwards for photos of narrowboats drawing in to stock up at the farm shop. Facilities at The Pig Place are basic (it has several portable toilets but no showers), but the owners rightly say the attractions on and around the site more than make up for it: whether fishing at the canal (with your own licence) just adjacent to the farm or messing about on the water with your own kayak or paddleboard. There are also plenty of scenic local walks to set out onto, including the canal towpath.

What customers say

This is a friendly, relaxed, adults-only campsite with a chilled vibe, situated on the Oxford canal. Visitors praise the picturesque location, canal walks, and on-site bar and food van. Live music and quirky features are highlights. While many appreciate the well-maintained grounds and helpful staff, the portable toilets are a recurring point of dissatisfaction. Some note uneven pitches and occasional M40/train noise. The absence of pigs has been noted by some returning visitors.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (medium)

Liked Everything! We had a brilliant couple of nights in tents. The whole place is really well organised and signposted, but with a very chilled vibe. Everyone very friendly, both staff and visitors. LOVED the live music (on both days) and a good boogie too! Paddleboarding on the river to a great pub. Cannot fault it, will def come back.

Disliked Nothing really ... we knew about the loos beforehand, not really a problem. Just wonder if you could possibly do compost loos ....?

Liked An informal park with a shilled out vibe. Nice bar and great entertainment on offer. A bit tricky to find a flatish spot but otherwise very good all round. Also good as only an hour or so from the Hartlington Indie Camper depot.

Liked Very friendly staff. The shop, bar and food were all open. Pretty location on the canal, choose your own pitch, pitches slightly slanted but wasn’t an issue for me.
I did not use the facilities but they looked quite basic.

Liked Much better than expected, Has a shop, food van and bar, area for dogs and canal towpaths are just a short walk out of main entrance which has a dog friendly pub about 20 mins walk away

Disliked Some of the reviews, yes they're portaloos but they were clean and fairly new, think some of the reviewers should stick to caravan club sites

Local attractions

The Oxford Canal is one of the oldest mainline canals in England and has walkies all along its 77-mile towpath, passing some of the most scenic spots and villages in Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire. It’s mostly easy hoofing along the whole route with few hills: carve a slice into a day trip or afternoon amble. Pack a picnic (of bacon sarnies) and go to Banbury four miles away to tackle the modernised towpath walk from Banbury to Cropredy via the newly added glass bridge, waterworks gallery and museum spanning the canal along the way. A day at dramatic Stratford-upon-Avon should be on the cards in any holiday too.
