General

  • Rural site on a family-run farm in the village of Dilwyn
  • Animals including rabbits, chickens and ponies to meet and feed
  • On the Black and White Trail 25 minutes' drive from Hereford

Giant rabbits, pygmy goats, ponies, chickens, sheep – they’re all down here in Dilwyn, living a cheery life on family-run New Farm 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford.

And to keep them in that cheery state they all need feeding on a daily basis – something friendly owners Alison and Mark are happy to have a little posse of small helpers for (or larger ones, if you can’t resist the thought of getting up close to all the cute animals…). That’s just the closest of the countryside activities, of course – the site’s in a handy spot for Herefordshire walks, River Wye canoe trips, castle visits and outings to the many excellent cider producers along the Herefordshire Cider Route.

Cider sipping’s not a terribly sensible option while out driving, so it’s a fine idea to pick some up to accompany a barbecue back on site; an even finer idea if you source fresh grill supplies from one of the butchers a few minutes away in Weobley. Not in the mood to cook? The local pub (literally – it was the country’s first to be bought by the parish council) is an easy five-minute amble from the farm for decent food and fine brews in a 17th-century coaching inn.

Not everyone around here is involved in producing/selling booze; all sorts of things are created out in this part of the country, including the site’s composting eco toilet, which was crafted from Welsh cedar wood over in Machynlleth. Guests also have access to a shower room with hand basin, and can log on to the internet to keep contact with the wider world.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

This is an amazing unique find ! We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend break. We were greeted by Mark who is a wonderful host, very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The shepherd huts are cosy and cute with everything you need. The wide open space was perfect for our 3 year old to play safely. The added bonus was our son helping to feed the rabbit and goats each morning, he loves this experience! The animals being all around you was wonderful it was peaceful, tranquil and just the break we needed after COVID. We were left to ourselves but Marl was on hand if needed. Very clean and tidy a must stay for anyone loving animals and tranquillity.

We were made to feel very welcome by Mark from before our arrival and throughout our stay and yet felt completely independent. Everything available that you need for camping with immaculately clean shower block and all other facilities including picnic bench, fridge, worktop for cooking and preparing food and wash-up area - even a clean tea towel and w-u-liquid was provided. During our two nights we had a close up view of a hedgehog walking through the camping field - haven't seen one in ages as well as woodpeckers and finches in the old orchard area and some lovely starry skies on the first night (it was cloudy on the second night). Very accessible and close to local amenities in Dilwyn and nearby Weobley and a great touring place for the Welsh Marches. Families will greatly enjoy seeing the kid goats, hens and giant rabbit!

The site is very nice and peaceful, 5 mins from the local pub and with plenty of walks and beautiful surrounding countryside. Mark is very friendly and helpful and had gone to great lengths to make sure we had a nice stay. The facilities are great with everything you could need including a fridge. The cold cider on arrival was a nice touch! The chickens and little goats pottering around the field were lovely and added to the enjoyment of our stay. We definitely plan to return.

We have 2 children, 9 and 6 and were on our way home from Cornwall to Scotland. This was a perfect extra mini holiday to break the journey. The children absolutely loved the field to run about in, the gorgeous animals, having their own wee hut and all the extra details like books and hot chocolate! We loved the peaceful setting, the clean facilities, the equipment - everything has been thought of. The owners were friendly, efficient and unobtrusive and we felt very welcome. Chilled cider on arrival, great dinner at the local pub and a comfy nights sleep. Visited Ludlow which was absolutely lovely, great wee museum, market, shops and a castle, then National Trust's Berrington Hall which was glorious. BBQ back at the Huts in the evening, a wonderful day! Very much hope to return.

The site is beautiful and tranquil, just as the picture, and really safe for little ones to run around. The shepherds huts are comfortable, clean and a lovely experience. Very much glamping! There is a picnic table under a huge sail type cover and a BBQ which we really enjoyed on the sunny evenings. The shower is hot, the washroom new and fresh and the eco-friendly loo clean and convenient.
The family are lovely and very helpful for anything you need as well as local tips! Our daughter loved feeding the goats, giant rabbits, chicken's and sheep with the family's teenage daughter who kindly involved her.
We enjoyed a day our in Ludlow with its Castle and market and took in Hereford, its cathedral and shops.
Local pubs and butcher in Dilwyn and neighbouring Weobly were great!
This is definitely the place if you want to unwind, enjoy tranquility and recharge!

Local attractions

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn.

For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes).

The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (13.6 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (16.8 miles)
  • Eastnor Castle (22.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Croft Castle and Parkland (7.0 miles)
  • The Weir (7.9 miles)
