New Farm: Covered dining area

General

  • Peaceful rural site on a family-run farm in the village of Dilwyn
  • Animals including rabbits and chickens to meet and feed
  • On the Black and White Trail 25 minutes' drive from Hereford

Giant rabbits, pygmy goats, chickens, sheep, an Indian runner duck – they’re all down here in Dilwyn, living a cheery life on the quiet family-run New Farm 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford.

And to keep them in that cheery state they all need feeding on a daily basis – something friendly owners Alison and Mark are happy to have a little posse of small helpers for (or larger ones, if you can’t resist the thought of getting up close to all the cute animals…). That’s just the closest of the countryside activities, of course – the site’s in a handy spot for Herefordshire walks, River Wye canoe trips, castle visits and outings to the many excellent cider producers along the Herefordshire Cider Route.

Cider sipping’s not a terribly sensible option while out driving, so it’s a fine idea to pick some up to accompany a barbecue back on site; an even finer idea if you source fresh grill supplies from one of the butchers a few minutes away in Weobley. Not in the mood to cook? The local pub (literally – it was the country’s first to be bought by the parish council) is an easy five-minute amble from the farm for decent food and fine brews in a 17th-century coaching inn.

Not everyone around here is involved in producing/selling booze; all sorts of things are created out in this part of the country, including the site’s composting eco toilet, which was crafted from Welsh cedar wood over in Machynlleth. Guests also have access to a shower room with hand basin, and can log on to the internet to keep contact with the wider world.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Everything. A hidden little gem. Tucked away in a quaint little village, this cute campsite is the perfect retreat if you want to just get away from it all. The owner, Mark is very accommodating and full of local knowledge. Shower room was lovely and clean. There is a fridge that you can use but also electric hook up. The aminals, which our daughter loved, were an added bonus. The chickens and ducks especially, amused us most evenings. The eco toilet took a bit of getting used to but again, was clean and also added to the experience of this wonderful little site. We literally had the best week.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your kind review, it was lovely to meet you.

We try hard at New Farm Shepherds Huts and Camping to make sure that all our guests have a great stay with us whether its for a week or a simple overnight stop over.

I'm sure it helps that the pub is a short 3 min walk and does great food.

Best wishes, Mark, Toby and Anna

Throughly enjoyed our stay, highly recommended. We stayed with another family, so there were four adults and two 9 year olds, and no one else. The girls loved the animals, especially the baby goats. Mark (owner) let them help feed the animals in the mornings which was a brilliant experience for them both.
The whole site was peaceful, clean and relaxing, and mark was on hand if required.
    Can’t wait to visit again.

Very friendly contact before arriving and welcome and briefing on arrival. Quiet orchard paddock with friendly trio of running ducks, goats etc. Good facilities- free EHU offered, clean and well maintained compost toilets and (in covid) our own shower room - all scrupulously maintained and evident care re covid precautions. Good pub meal within 5 minutes. Would definitely revisit if in that area.

We have just stayed here in our camper van for the weekend and couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful and peaceful setting in a lovely pretty village! It was perfect for our two children 9 and 5 to have lots of open space and they really enjoyed all the little animals and feeding them each morning with a little help from Toby! Mark was a great host very friendly and welcoming! We will definitely be visiting again as it is the perfect base to explore Herefordshire and it’s beautiful surrounding areas! Emma, Tom and family 😀

Local attractions

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn.

For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes).

The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (21.9 kilometres)
  • Stokesay Castle (27.1 kilometres)
  • Eastnor Castle (36.2 kilometres)

  • Croft Castle and Parkland (11.3 kilometres)
