  • Peaceful rural site on a family-run farm in the village of Dilwyn
  • Animals including rabbits and chickens to meet and feed
  • On the Black and White Trail 25 minutes' drive from Hereford
Giant rabbits, pygmy goats, chickens, sheep, an Indian runner duck – they’re all down here in Dilwyn, living a cheery life on the quiet family-run New Farm 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford. And to keep them in that cheery state they all need feeding on a daily basis – something friendly owners Alison and Mark are happy to have a little posse of small helpers for (or larger ones, if you can’t resist the thought of getting up close to all the cute animals…). That’s just the closest of the countryside activities, of course – the site’s in a handy spot for Herefordshire walks, River Wye canoe trips, castle visits and outings to the many excellent cider producers along the Herefordshire Cider Route. Cider sipping’s not a terribly sensible option while out driving, so it’s a fine idea to pick some up to accompany a barbecue back on site; an even finer idea if you source fresh grill supplies from one of the butchers a few minutes away in Weobley. Not in the mood to cook? The local pub (literally – it was the country’s first to be bought by the parish council) is an easy five-minute amble from the farm for decent food and fine brews in a 17th-century coaching inn. Not everyone around here is involved in producing/selling booze; all sorts of things are created out in this part of the country, including the site’s composting eco toilet, which was crafted from Welsh cedar wood over in Machynlleth. Guests also have access to a shower room with hand basin, and can log on to the internet to keep contact with the wider world.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Highly recommended!! Especially for families with smaller children as it is a very safe and quiet site with 2 good sized shower rooms, large walk in showers with great hot water and separate basins. The whole site is on a gentle slope and ringed by electric hook up points and several water taps. Although we didn’t use it there are also great kitchen facilities with a microwave etc and washing up area. We also recommend the local pub The Crown which also has a good menu. The hosts were really attentive on arrival and on hand during our stay if we needed them.

Disliked: Although we were fine with the compositing toilets and have used these at several other sites our teenage son refused to use them and I could imagine that younger children would find them as bit daunting without help. Environmentally though they are a great idea and worth persevering with if you haven’t used them before. Note that the site description does state that it is not suitable for motorhomes. We have a 6Meter Fiat Ducato based campervan which was a fairly tight fit through the entrance so I would not recommend the site if you have anything bigger.

Liked: Peaceful site in a pretty orchard, close to Dilwyn village pub, a delightful place to stay. Warm welcome. Good facilities (including a well equipped outdoor kitchen with seating - which we didn't need/use).

Disliked: Not a thing! Loved it all.

Liked: Lovely place with a super friendly owner. Mark made us and our children so welcome - and the children were very happy there: a field to play in, goats, ducks and rabbits to feed in the morning. Also great facilities! Would definitely recommend and hope we can visit again.

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: We had a wonderful 4 nights camped at New Farm. Mark was a brilliant host - friendly, communicable, knowledgable. Our two year old loved feeding the animals with 'Mark the farmer' in the mornings! The site itself was clean, peaceful and well-equipped - the listing accurately reflects the facilities available on the site. There were a few nice touches that made our stay there even easier - the kettle & microwave station, the provision of BBQ materials paid for via an honesty box etc. Location was excellent for us - a quiet village with a pub, play area across the road and short drives to various activities, including a number of NT properties (Croft Castle was great for youngsters but Berringtom Hall and Brockhampton Estate also well-worth visiting). Hereford and Ludlow not too far away either. Morrisons being just a 10 minute drive into Leominster was also a bonus. Highly recommended - I'm sure well be back one day! - Andy, Elle and Zach

Powered grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: The campsite is located in a small field behind a large house in the village. There's space for about 10 pitches, perfect if you want a bit of peace. Our pitch was on a gentle slope which looked like it was mowed just for us. It looks as though areas are not mowed if they are not booked, which is good for the local wildlife. Most of the rest of the field looked pretty flat. If you are pitching with friends let the owners know in advance if you want to be sited next to each other, they seem very accommodating. Once pitched you move your car to the small parking area. We had electric hook-up and nearby was a fire pit and picnic table. On site is a block containing two showers which were very clean and had good hot water. Oddly, whilst in the same small building, the showers are not positioned next to one another. To get from one to another you have to go through a gate and walk right round the entire building, which presents a minor challenge if trying to shower a family with young children and they are sharing shower gels and shampoos. And one didn't have a lock. But not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Another odd thing, for which there may a perfectly good reason we've yet to identify, is the presence of two compost toilets. We say odd, because there are the two suburban-standard showers clearly connected to drains, and the site is behind a row of houses in a residential street. So not totally 'off-grid' Not sure why the toilets weren't added to the shower block and aren't connected to the local sewers! So, avoid anything too spicy before you go to bed. But, an experience we won't forget! There are two under-counter fridges each with a freezer compartment and a tabletop freezer. There's also a micro-waveh, kettle, toaster and what looked like an electric cooking plate. There were also fire-lighters and charcoal which could be purchased on an honesty basis. So, pretty well-equipped for a small site! Nearby is a washing-up area with hot and cold water and a bottle of Ecover. It's a shame this area isn't covered from the elements. Our kids loved feeding and petting the animals. As many others have mentioned, Mark, one of the owners, is very friendly and approachable and clearly patient when dealing with kids feeding his pets! On the whole this is a great little campsite, quiet and a little rustic and a place to escape from most of a fast-moving modern world. There's no wi-fi, which is not a bad thing. There's a pub in the village serving really nice food within staggering distance.

Disliked: The only (slightly) downside were the compost toilets. They could do with a light and taps nearby. Just try not to think of all the people who touched that sawdust scoop before you! And head-torch is advisable. And could also do with turning round or being re-located as currently they are facing the entire site, advertising your entry and exit to all. Whilst they are all part of the 'experience' it's probably the experience we looked forward to least at this site. Uncovered washing area which was not great when raining. Showers layout - not next to one another despite being part of same building (minor gripe) ---- About pitchup.com - minimum photo size 1,800 x 1,350 pixels, but a portrait photo meeting those same dimensions (1350 x 1800) is not acceptable. I re-sized them in a photo app. And adding them in a complete random order, even if you upload one-by-one. And removing captions despite making them mandatory. Grr, come on pitchup, it's not 2005!

From the manager: Hi Tarun...I'm sorry it's taken to that you for your kind review. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and all feed back is welcome. The answer to some of your observations lie in the fact that New Farm Shepherds Huts and Camping has evolved over a period of time. We started with Shepherds Huts for family and friends and added an eco loo. As we evolved we added one shower room and opened for campers too. As a result of our comparative success we added a second loo and shower room. The loos are orientated that way as they are if a quaint design and hopefully look quite nice. There is bacterial hand cleaner in the eco loos ideal for immediate use before using a washroom. It's all a work in progress and we look to evolve each year. Lovely to have met you and hope to see you again some time.

Liked: What I say about this site doesn't do it justice. It was clean, open, friendly, spacious. Campers are not on top of each other, kids had space to run and play safely. Mark took the children to feed the animals every morning, they would wait patiently until he arrived and it was their favourite part of the day, apart from our daily visits from Tezmo, the cat. They didn't want to leave for day trips or to come home and neither did the adults. The locals are very friendly. Pub just around the corner and playground over the road. My husband and I were, for the first time in a long time, able to stop and relax here. Our little piece of paradise. Favourite place to be and will definitely be returning.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike here.

Local attractions

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn. For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes). The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.
