Giant rabbits, pygmy goats, chickens, sheep, an Indian runner duck – they’re all down here in Dilwyn, living a cheery life on the quiet family-run New Farm 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford. And to keep them in that cheery state they all need feeding on a daily basis – something friendly owners Alison and Mark are happy to have a little posse of small helpers for (or larger ones, if you can’t resist the thought of getting up close to all the cute animals…). That’s just the closest of the countryside activities, of course – the site’s in a handy spot for Herefordshire walks, River Wye canoe trips, castle visits and outings to the many excellent cider producers along the Herefordshire Cider Route. Cider sipping’s not a terribly sensible option while out driving, so it’s a fine idea to pick some up to accompany a barbecue back on site; an even finer idea if you source fresh grill supplies from one of the butchers a few minutes away in Weobley. Not in the mood to cook? The local pub (literally – it was the country’s first to be bought by the parish council) is an easy five-minute amble from the farm for decent food and fine brews in a 17th-century coaching inn. Not everyone around here is involved in producing/selling booze; all sorts of things are created out in this part of the country, including the site’s composting eco toilet, which was crafted from Welsh cedar wood over in Machynlleth. Guests also have access to a shower room with hand basin, and can log on to the internet to keep contact with the wider world.

Un càmping petit i tranquil amb parcel·les espaioses en un poble encantador. Els hostes, Mark i Chantal, són molt amables. Els nens gaudeixen ajudant a donar menjar als animals. Em va agradar Idyllic location, very friendly and helpful hosts. Children can help with feeding the animals each morning. The compost toilets are clean, welcoming and well maintained. The village is charming and has an excellent pub which does good food, cider and beer.

Em va agradar Lovely peaceful site, excellent communication throughout our short stay. Loved the animals.
Facilities clean and exactly as described. This was our first experience of a composting toilet and I’m not a fan personally, but this is no reflection on the site.

Em va agradar The site was lovely, nice and small and the pitches really good and more than big enough, and nicely spaced apart from each other. Nice views of the church and surrounding areas. The goats, chickens and ducks were fun and great for the kids, who were allowed to help feed them every morning. Showers and toilets were clean and well-maintained, and it was useful having a hob, microwave, fridges and freezers provided. Chantal and Mark were amazing, friendly and helpful and super-relaxed which was everything we wanted, and I got a really helpful text before we stayed giving more info. The surrounding area was really picturesque with lots of lovely walks and a good pub in the village. It was really easy and straightforward to get to the site and easy to find. A great campsite and we'll plan on going back again! Eggs were available from the chickens and ducks too which was a nice extra!

Em va agradar Excellent pitches, lots of space, clean loos and shower rooms, very good facilities and lovely owners. We loved the animals and Chantal let my children help feed the sheep and goats. A great base for our plans in Hereford, Hay on Wye and Ludlow.

No em va agradar Only a small gripe but travelling on my own (with children) I had to jump in and out of the car to open and shut gates a lot!

Em va agradar Lovely small quiet camp site. You can walk to the local pub which provides food. There are goats and geese to feed if you have little ones. Toilets and showers available, also area providing cooking facilities. Would definitely stay again.

Llocs d'interès

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn. For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes). The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.
