  • Peaceful rural site on a family-run farm in the village of Dilwyn
  • Animals including rabbits and chickens to meet and feed
  • On the Black and White Trail 25 minutes' drive from Hereford
Giant rabbits, pygmy goats, chickens, sheep, an Indian runner duck – they’re all down here in Dilwyn, living a cheery life on the quiet family-run New Farm 25 minutes’ drive from Hereford. And to keep them in that cheery state they all need feeding on a daily basis – something friendly owners Alison and Mark are happy to have a little posse of small helpers for (or larger ones, if you can’t resist the thought of getting up close to all the cute animals…). That’s just the closest of the countryside activities, of course – the site’s in a handy spot for Herefordshire walks, River Wye canoe trips, castle visits and outings to the many excellent cider producers along the Herefordshire Cider Route. Cider sipping’s not a terribly sensible option while out driving, so it’s a fine idea to pick some up to accompany a barbecue back on site; an even finer idea if you source fresh grill supplies from one of the butchers a few minutes away in Weobley. Not in the mood to cook? The local pub (literally – it was the country’s first to be bought by the parish council) is an easy five-minute amble from the farm for decent food and fine brews in a 17th-century coaching inn. Not everyone around here is involved in producing/selling booze; all sorts of things are created out in this part of the country, including the site’s composting eco toilet, which was crafted from Welsh cedar wood over in Machynlleth. Guests also have access to a shower room with hand basin, and can log on to the internet to keep contact with the wider world.

What customers say

This small, peaceful campsite boasts friendly hosts and well-maintained, clean facilities including showers and composting toilets. Guests appreciated the spacious pitches, the opportunity to interact with animals, and the close proximity to a local pub and walking routes. While most found the amenities excellent, a few noted occasional issues with cold showers and uncovered washing-up areas. The site is highly recommended for a relaxing stay.

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Such an idilic location, only 6 or so pitches all with electric hook ups, large area around your pitch so lots of space between you and the neighbours. Loved the animals (goats, ducks, sheep, chickens and cat). Composting toilets in the shade and perfectly fine. Fridges/microwave/kettle for use of needed. Showers areas clean. Super easy to come and go as you please more or less.

Disliked Showers were cold in the morning, my only slightly annoyance but also invigorating, definitely woke you up!. Presumably the other campers had used it all the hot water up before we got there. We showered in the evening instead and plenty of hot water then so on a whole not a problem.

From the manager: Hi Guys, thank you for such a super review, it was lovely meeting you.

Sorry you had a cold shower, the hot water is set for 6am to 11am, it must have been re heating after a busy morning...

Hope to see you again soon.

Best wishes, Mark and Chantal

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Very beautiful setting, ample pitches and wonderful hosts. Mark was very friendly and helpful, he welcomed the children in to the animal pen during feeding time for them to get a closer look.
Facilities were fine, compost toilet and shower areas were clean and easy to use.
The washing up area wasn't covered so could have been very wet if raining, only downside.
Overall excellent, we would go back again

Liked Small site with 2 toilets and 2 showers. Washing up area had hot water which was a bonus as well.
Mark and his family were all welcoming and great with the kids and the animals were all very well looked after.
Very peaceful site to wind down.
Park right opposite and a beautiful church.
Fridge and freezers also provide and for a small fee could have logs fire pit and a bbq which was an added bonus.

Liked The peaceful beautiful location :)

Electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked The location is beautiful! The pitches were well placed and well located. The animals on site were wonderful for the children in our group. We loved being able to play rounders and football in the fields. Our host was great--friendly and very accommodating. A really lovely campground! We appreciated the firewood and kindling that we were able to purchase.

Disliked The composting toilets were dark inside so it was difficult to see. The dishwashing area was uncovered which would be problematic in bad weather. The showers ran cold probably 50% of the time. Website could be more detailed about the really convenient amenities available, that there are picnic tables at our pitches and that firewood and charcoal and kindling and barbecues and fire pits are all available for purchase or rent. (A real bonus!)

Left toilet door couldn't be closed from inside completely. Final step on same toilet was quite high. Composting toilets weren't a great experience.

Local attractions

If a jaunt along the cider route isn’t your thing, perhaps you’ll be more taken with a day out on the Black and White Trail, which makes its way between several pretty and historic villages (with the area’s famed black-and-white houses, hence the name…) including little Dilwyn. For rather grander properties on a tour through the countryside, make tracks to Hampton Court Castle, Berrington Hall and Croft Castle, all of which are within a 20-minute drive. There’s a fine old Norman castle in Ludlow (half an hour) too, along with lots of excellent food shops; for a book to read while you sort through your finds, head to the bookshop mecca of Hay-on-Wye (25 minutes). The biggest city around these parts is Hereford, 25 minutes away (and with a bus connection from Dilwyn running a few days a week). Head over here to see the world’s largest surviving medieval map (the Mappa Mundi, displayed at the cathedral), visit the Black and White Museum or take a break from all the history by hiring canoes to paddle down the River Wye.
