  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 14 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club
Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK. Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip. The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape. The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways. Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Great pitches. Very clean and tidy and level. Super quiet as I was only one staying.
Staff at pub are all friendly although I didn’t eat so can’t comment on food.

Disliked Bit pricey at £30 with no shower or washing up facilities. You do have use of toilets in pub so ok for a quick stop over

We stayed on the campsite for 7 nights while I played Masters…

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked We stayed on the campsite for 7 nights while I played Masters Hockey at Nottingham University. We were greeted by Sue who had been waiting for us to arrive and shoed us to our pitch and explain where the fresh water and Esan point were located. All the pitches are large hard standing pitches with the added bonus that each has a waste water drain. In addition each pitch has its own grass area the a table and sun umbrella. The toilets are clean open 24/7 and adjacent to the pitches at the pub. Sue and Ian are wonderful host and provide any help you need in our case a power lead that was found to be faulty.

The site is a great place to stop if you are you need a nights stop over while travelling from the North or the South up the M1 being only about 2 miles off Junction 25. If you want to look round the it's about 6 miles from Nottingham or Derby with buses to both places if you don't want to drive, indeed the bus into Nottingham goes just past the University so the site would suit anyone wanting to visit the University.

Overall a terrific site well placed and we will certainly be back.

Average, good welcome but a bit pricey…

Electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked We stayed for two nights at the campsite behind The Chequers Inn in Stanton by Dale and had a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The site itself is compact, tidy, and well cared for, run by Sue, the friendly landlady of the pub.

Each pitch offers a gravel area alongside a grass section, complete with a well-maintained picnic table and umbrella—making it easy to relax outdoors. A particularly convenient feature is the grey waste point provided at each pitch, which you don’t always find on smaller sites.

The Chequers Inn is a real gem. It’s beautifully presented with a clean, welcoming atmosphere and a football-themed décor that gives it a unique character. The pub serves a great selection of food and beer, though food must be pre-ordered—a detail worth noting for planning ahead. There are two pleasant outdoor seating areas, ideal for enjoying a drink in the evening.
Look out for Ken, the sites Harris Hawk.

Overall, it’s a well-run site with excellent facilities, a warm welcome, and a great pub just steps away. We would definitely recommend a stay here.

Good site for all year round to visit Nottingham and Derby.

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology. Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.) Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).
