Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite: Level and well-maintained

General

  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 14 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club

Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK.

Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip.

The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape.

The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways.

Please note that kids under the age of 14 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Please note

This campground/park has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests under the age of 14 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The campground/park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The location in a pretty village surrounded by countryside with plenty to see round and about and lots of walks. The pub itself is very nice and friendly, Sue, Ian and the team are great hosts, food & drink is great stuff, and all is clean and tidy as you'd expect. The pets are friendly and Ken ... well he is just Ken!

The large touring pitches with own picnic table on a grassed area. No showers not a problem at all for us as we have our own facilities on board.

Nicely presented site. It’s obviously fairly new and fresh.

    Disliked:

Everything else! We chose this site as a base for for seeing my family to finalise our parents ashes. We’re scattered all over the UK now but our childhood home was in Wollaton and some family are still in Beeston/Ilkeston so it was perfect for this. So I thought……..
We have a big tag axle motorhome and it states on the booking info that they are welcome. It was a tight squeeze to enter the site from the road but we managed with inches to spare.
On arrival approx 6pm it was dark and raining. A lady came out and asked if I was Helen? I confirmed and she said “You’re on pitch 1. I’m working in the pub, if you need anything else come and ask”. We asked there and there where the water was as we needed to fill up and she directed us. It was all said in quite an abrupt manner but as it was raining and she said she was working in the pub I thought she might have been a bit busy and stressed.
We pitched up but weren’t completely on our pitch due to them not being long enough for a tag axle van. This wasn’t really an issue though.
We’d read on the pub website about the food in the pub having to be booked and ordered in advance and why and thought it sounded like a really good ethos. (So it’s fresh, less waste etc).
I went off with my family the next day to do what we were there to do. We then decided it would be nice for us all to go back to the pub for drinks and a general catch up. WHAT A MISTAKE!
As we all arrived, I said we were staying on site and I’d brought my family with me now for a drink. I also said myself and my husband would be eating there tomorrow night. The answer was “No you won’t! We’re fully booked. Got a party with 30 in. You snooze you lose”.
A lot depends on HOW somebody says this. It was said in a friendly manner. No apology. No nothing. If anything it felt very hostile.
I ordered our drinks and tried to pay contactless. It didn’t work immediately so she snatched the machine and my card pressing this that and the other in a very impatient way then said “put your card in”. It still didn’t work but eventually worked on contactless. I was so shocked by the abruptness that had I thought, I d have said something there and then!
My sister ordered a coffee and was told “I have to go out there and I’m serving”. My sister said that’s fine I’ll wait if just shout when it’s ready I’ll collect it. The Landlady shouted “white?” My sister said “no black”. (As she’d already said).
When the coffee came it was “placed” on the bar and she shouted “COFFEE!” It wasn’t in a pleasant manner at all. There was nothing pleasant about her! Except for when she was serving the regulars. Then she was full of laughter and pleasantries. We felt extremely uncomfortable in there and we were glad that we COULDN’T book for food. RUDE!
Not once we’re we asked if we were ok or shown where any other facilities were like the chemical emptying point etc. We found it by chance as it’s not at all obvious and isn’t even on the site! It’s in the pub car park!
We ended up going to the pub next door to the Stanhope Arms on the Saturday night for a meal. 8 of us and I cannot stress enough how different the atmosphere was!
We were given the biggest welcome! Nothing was too much trouble. The food was perfect and the girls serving remembered who had ordered what! Even down to who had medium rare steak and who had medium to well done! We had the best few hours and it was such a contrast to where we’d been the afternoon before.
We’ve just sold our campsite. It was only a small site like this one. Morvenview in Caithness in Scotland. I recommend that you take a look at our reviews to learn about customer service!
We used to have information sheets to hand out to customers on arrival telling them where everything was and how it worked. This was in addition to greeting them in the rain and showing them! How you’ve won Pitchup awards I honestly don’t know!

From the manager...

Wow just wow! I’ve never had the pleasure of reading so much rubbish! At the end of your review you comment “how you’ve won Pitchup awards I honestly don’t know!”

So let me give you the answer! We have won such awards with reviews from people just like you who take the time to write a review. Unlike yours ( 4/10 the lowest review score we have ever had by a long way) 96% of our visitors have marked us 10/10 so I am afraid you fall into the category of 4% whom we choose to ignore.

Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback.

My dog being attacked by pub dog

From the manager...

Your review should be all about the touring site. Nothing to do about a pub dog attacking your dog. If by the way you where the owner of a grossly overweight 7 month old pug dog I suggest you take more care over how you look after it also what you feed it on! Letting such a young dog be so obese is cruel!

Loved our 2 night stay here. The quietness of the site was perfect for our dog as she doesn't always like places too busy. The best thing about it though is the pub it's attached to. A small, cosy and welcoming place with very friendly owners and locals. I'm sure we'll be back here again in the future.

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology.

Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.)

Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).
