General

  • Well-maintained pub site for guests 11 years and over
  • In Stanton by Dale; 20 minutes' drive from Attenborough Nature Centre
  • Real ale and pub food served; 20 minutes' walk from a golf club

Dart off to Derbyshire and make for Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite in Stanton by Dale, a well-kept site attached to an award-winning pub. The name of this spot is a nod to Stanton's industrial heritage – if the village rings a bell, it may well be because 'Stanton' crops up on many a manhole cover across the UK.

Nowadays, things are peaceful around here, and the site is set between traditional red brick houses and a small village green. The Chequers Inn is over 200 years old and still in fine fettle – its selling point remains its focus on real ales and proper home-cooked food. The pub, like the site, is mightily dog-friendly, so don't hesitate to bring four-legged friends along on your trip.

The pitches here are level, well-drained and conveniently located to the rear of the pub. Although it's close to the M1, off-site strolls are unlikely to involve busy roads and traffic – Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite is a few minutes' walk from footpaths that'll take you through the pleasant fields and hills that make up the local landscape.

The nearest supermarket can be found in Sandiacre (five minutes' drive); Ilkeston (10 minutes) has a wider range of shops and takeaways.

Please note that kids under the age of 11 aren't allowed to stay at Irondale Touring Caravans and Campsite.

Please note

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The bar is open between 01/01 and 31/12.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests under the age of 11 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Very helpful and friendly, the pub food was home made and was lovely. With all what’s going off they was very well organised lots of hand gel.

The site is small only 6 or 8 pitches but well maintained plenty of room for caravan awning and car.
All pictures are level with electric hook up.
This place is great if you would like to visit Derby or Nottingham as not far at all.
We will definitely be coming back especially for the pub food 😋.

    Disliked:

Access road not great but it is a Country pub just take your time. Tip when going in drive as Close to your left as possible. We have a 26ft caravan and managed fine.

Large flat well drained pitches, plenty of space to get large twin axle on pitch (7.98mt twin axle)well kept grass area next to pitches with picnic table and a bird table, nice touch. Water point easily accessible by the gate, grey/ cassette emptying point also easily accessible top of the car park in its own area with hose pipe for rinsing.Sue the landlady gave us a cheery welcome on arrival told us where the water etc was,we had rung prior to arrival to let her know eta, toilet facilities in the pub are accessible to pitches 24/7 and spotlessly clean.pub is cosy with great food and ales at very reasonable prices, can recommend the steak pie! We will be returning, access off the road can be tight if you don’t take the right line, not a negative just an advisory to those with larger outfits.quiet at night and felt secure.gated access. We used our own wifi, phone signal ok good tv reception.

The site itself, attached to the Chequers Inn is well kept with flat pitches.
The village itself is pleasant but doesn't have a shop but has another very welcoming pub (Stanhope Arms) which serves good food and observes good social distancing practices.
There is a pleasant deli/coffee shop at the old village school.

    Disliked:

On checking in a lady from the pub came out and told us our pitch number then disappeared. We parked up then discovered that we had to get the motorhome back to the entry gate to fill up with water. It would have been good to have been told where the fresh water, chemical toilet and grey water points were on checking in.
Re waste aspects we discovered that these are tucked away at the top of the pub car park and not easy to use, especially for getting rid of dirty water from our carrier. There is no water supply either so couldn't rinse out the chemical toilet.
With regards to the Chequers Inn I don't think I would recommend for the hospitality. My wife went in initially whilst I set up the motorhome and received a rather unfriendly welcome. I went in shortly after to pay the balance on the pitch charges. Only on getting home and checking with my original booking did I discover that I had been overcharged so if you choose to stay here make sure you know what your outstanding payment is before going to pay. Also social distancing in the pub was not very apparent, partly because the internal layout won't facilitate it.
Overall, I didn't think this was good value for money at £25/night (or £27.50 as we ended up paying with the overcharge). There was no site wi-fi either.

This site is relatively new and some of the facilities are yet to be completed, but don’t let this put you off booking, they might have finished them when you go. There are 5 semi hard standings with a grass patch at the side including a picnic table for your sole use, plus a grass pitch for tents. The site is situated in a very picturesque village that is well worth exploring. At the back of the site is access to a country walk for those who wish to get out and about a bit, but my favourite was without a doubt the Chequers Inn, where a good selection of ales were available and the home cooked meals were great value. We will definitely make this location one of our regular haunts as it is less than an hour from our home.

    Disliked:

No dislikes though a WiFi facility would be a great addition.

No shower facilities. Only toilet in pub. Expensive night fee especially when dining in pub. No option to not have electric.

From the manager...

Very disappointed with your comments and review. In particular that you would not recommend to friends or visit again. The information is quite clear of the facilities we offer or in this case don’t offer! We do not force you to dine in the pub and there is an option not to have electric but quite frankly what is the point? The most disappointing of your review are the low ratings you give for friendliness and customer service which quite honestly do not reflect what we are about. The owners and staff are well known for their exemplary standards of customer service.

Local attractions

Do a round of the greens at Erewash Valley Golf Club (20 minutes' walk), a well-kept local club with fab tree-lined fairways that's easily accessible on foot. Other outdoor pursuits around here include fishing, with the nearest angling spot about five minutes' drive away, and birdwatching – Attenborough Nature Centre (20 minutes) may be named after the nearby village rather than the TV presenter, but it's still a prime pick for a spot of ornithology.

Nottingham city centre (20 minutes) is next up, for a castle, shopping centres and the interactive National Justice Museum. (Rather not drive around town? Pull up to one of the city's park and rides and take the tram instead.) On the outskirts of Nottingham is Wollaton Hall (20 minutes), an Elizabethan country house with a deer park and formal gardens. (Remember Batman's mansion in The Dark Knight Rises? Yep, that was filmed here.)

Heading towards the Peak District National Park (from 45 minutes) is also on the cards, whether you opt for Derbyshire dalliances in the grounds of Chatsworth House (an hour) or old-time amusements and riverside walks in Matlock Bath (45 minutes).

Must see

  • Wollaton Hall and Park (6.8 kilometers)
  • Nottingham Castle (10.6 kilometers)
