Burrs Manor Wild Camping: Views across open fields

General

  • Peaceful wild camping at a farmland site in the Peak District
  • A 15-minute drive from the towns of Buxton and Bakewell
  • Less than an hour from Alton Towers theme park; near the Monsal Trail

Relaxing among green fields, trekking through the hills of the Peak District and settling down of an evening in a traditional village pub… If that sounds like your dream getaway then Burrs Manor Wild Camping, a mile from the village of Chelmorton in the Peak District, should be the very spot for you.

The site is in a top spot for walking and cycling getaways, close to many of the waymarked trails crisscrossing the Peak District. The site is three miles from the start of the Monsal Trail, where you can hire bikes or explore the former railway line on foot or horseback, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the starts of the High Peak Trail and the Tissington Trail.

You can stay active on site with a game of footgolf (book in advance) or just idle around in the peace and quiet of the countryside farmland, taking in the view over the farmhouse towards the peaks.

To unwind in the evenings, head to the traditional village pub in nearby Chelmorton, a 25-minute walk away, to have a bite to eat and knock one back in the beer garden. If you’d prefer to handle all the cooking yourself, barbecues are welcome on site and the towns of Buxton and Bakewell are nearby when you need to stock up on supplies.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Fishing is not currently available due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including footgolf are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Well signposted from the main road. Follow the dirt track down towards the farm house turning into a larger open field on the left. Excellent volcanic hot power shower, clean facilities and free fire pit to use. Unisex shower facilities. Farmers’ wife came to collect pitch fee. Ideal location for visiting wonderful blue lagoon. Spent two nights travelling to many attractions, leaving early each morning and returning by 3pm as the light fades early. Visited blue lagoon, Ashbourne, Derby, the roaches, stepping stones, Buxton and Bakewell. I enjoyed brekkie at the cheap yummy Trades Man’s entrance in Buxton opposite Sainsbury’s. Plenty of free parking along the side roads. I enjoyed the walk to the blue lagoon. A toxic hazardous old quarry pit. Buxton was great for shopping. I enjoyed the variety of shops and easy parking. I enjoyed my stay here even though my air beam tent collapsed twice due to heavy rain and winds. The campsite was very relaxed, I enjoyed my stay. I would recommend the location for visiting some fantastic attractions. The farmer’s wife was very friendly and helpful.

This is a great place for anyone who likes the wild camping feel. Facilities are basic but you'll have everything you need - shower, toilet, water. You can use a fire pit. Prices are by the pitch, with no extra costs for tents, people, cars etc. The owners are friendly and the nearby area is interesting to explore.

The relative remoteness of the site. Always hot water available. Most people adhered to the request for respect to other campers e.g. no music after 10.30pm etc. The offer of a free fire pit plus some kindling and logs!

    Disliked:

Only one shower could prove problematical if and when the campsite got very busy.

Local attractions

There’s lots more to do in the Peak District National Park than follow trails: abseil from the viaduct at Millers Dale, explore the spectacular dams of Derwent Valley or dive below ground at Blue John Cavern – all less than an hour from Burrs Manor.

The nearby towns of Buxton and Bakewell are must-visit spots too: in Buxton, go below the earth’s surface once more at Poole’s Cavern, stand under the stunning Devonshire dome, or stroll through the Pavilion Gardens. And in Bakewell? There’s plenty to see and do here too, but the one thing you must try is a Bakewell pudding...

Plenty of old houses are in the area for historic and cultural days too: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Tissington Hall are each less than 30 minutes from Burrs Manor, and The Old Manor, White Peak Estate, Little Moreton Hall, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall are all within an hour’s drive.

Too sedate? A more high-octane experience awaits on the rides at Alton Towers theme park, a 50-minute drive from Burrs Manor. For something that falls somewhere in the middle, try a treetop adventure full of zip lines and rope courses at Go Ape, 15 minutes from the site.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (8.0 miles)
