  • Peaceful wild camping at a farmland site in the Peak District
  • A 15-minute drive from the towns of Buxton and Bakewell
  • Less than an hour from Alton Towers theme park; near the Monsal Trail
Relaxing among green fields, trekking through the hills of the Peak District and settling down of an evening in a traditional village pub… If that sounds like your dream getaway then Burrs Manor Wild Camping, a mile from the village of Chelmorton in the Peak District, should be the very spot for you. The site is in a top spot for walking and cycling getaways, close to many of the waymarked trails crisscrossing the Peak District. The site is three miles from the start of the Monsal Trail, where you can hire bikes or explore the former railway line on foot or horseback, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the starts of the High Peak Trail and the Tissington Trail. You can stay active on site with a game of footgolf (book in advance) or just idle around in the peace and quiet of the countryside farmland, taking in the view over the farmhouse towards the peaks. To unwind in the evenings, head to the traditional village pub in nearby Chelmorton, a 25-minute walk away, to have a bite to eat and knock one back in the beer garden. If you’d prefer to handle all the cooking yourself, barbecues are welcome on site and the towns of Buxton and Bakewell are nearby when you need to stock up on supplies.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Simple quiet campsite. Pick your own pitch with plenty of space with fire pits and some benches dotted around. Easy access to some great hikes right from the campsite. Very fairly priced.

Disliked: Both fields were on hills, but with plenty of space you could find a flat 'ish' area to pitch.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: We had a lovely time here. The views around the campsite were beautiful and the site was very peaceful and secluded. The village nearby (Chelmerton) was a pleasant walk and not too far, with a lovely pub there. There was also a bus stop about 10 minutes away which you could take into Buxton (although the bus did only run about every hour), and everyone we bumped in to at the campsite was very friendly.

Disliked: The site was sloped down a bit, although this did not really cause any problems. It was however, very windy, which of course is not the fault of the site although just something to keep in mind - might be a good idea to bring a windbreak! The toilet and shower blocks were the main downfall. Overall they were fine and perfectly usuable. Although it took a while to warm up the water did get to a good temperature. However, while on our first day we saw an attendant cleaning the shower and toilets, we did not see them again at all for the duration of our trip and the state of the blocks only continued to worsen. The door to the toilet is constantly wedged open so there were quite a few bugs in there. There was no light in the shower block (and there was only 1 shower block working), and the floor was constantly wet and grassy/muddy). We attempted to use the washing up sink (which is a sink and drying up area randomly placed at the side of the field), but it was clogged the entire duration of our stay, so we stuck to mostly using antibacterial wipes. Because of this blocked sink (or just down to laziness I am not quite sure), we noticed other campers took to washing their dishes in the sinks in the toilet blocks. Whilst I would agree they might not have to do this if the washing up sink wasn't blocked, which is the fault of the site owners, I was amazed by the disgusting state other people left these bathroom sinks in. From the first night someone couldn't be bothered to open the plug to let the water drain out after they had done this and the sink looked like it had been chucked up in to for our whole trip. On the last night whilst we were trying to get ready for bed, an obnoxiously loud group of campers had taken their washing up bowl and all of their many pots and pans into the bathroom and were washing them up in there. We came back later when they were gone and they had left food debris all over the sides and in the sink which was really disgusting.

From the manager: Good Afternoon Thank you for your enquiry We are glad you had a lovely time here , we are sorry you found the toilets unsatisfactory but i can assure you they are cleaned regularly and I'm sorry you didn't see us , we do try to keep the bugs to an all time low such as putting the fly chain on the door but unfortunately due to the location of the campsite and been set amongst amazing countryside this does however comes with the down fall of flies etc Perhaps next time a "wildcamping" site may not be for you but we are so happy you would recommend us and come and stay here again Hope to see you soon

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Had a choice of main campsite and quite field hundred meters away, choose quite one and it was only us and another group on the field. This field had shed with toilets and water tap. It was exactly as it advertised on website. You need to read carefully and decide if it suits you. We enjoy it

Disliked: Everything was advertised on website, so we know what to expect. One shower on the main field, so we decided not to use it, but we’re ready for it.

Local attractions

There’s lots more to do in the Peak District National Park than follow trails: abseil from the viaduct at Millers Dale, explore the spectacular dams of Derwent Valley or dive below ground at Blue John Cavern – all less than an hour from Burrs Manor. The nearby towns of Buxton and Bakewell are must-visit spots too: in Buxton, go below the earth’s surface once more at Poole’s Cavern, stand under the stunning Devonshire dome, or stroll through the Pavilion Gardens. And in Bakewell? There’s plenty to see and do here too, but the one thing you must try is a Bakewell pudding... Plenty of old houses are in the area for historic and cultural days too: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Tissington Hall are each less than 30 minutes from Burrs Manor, and The Old Manor, White Peak Estate, Little Moreton Hall, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall are all within an hour’s drive. Too sedate? A more high-octane experience awaits on the rides at Alton Towers theme park, a 50-minute drive from Burrs Manor. For something that falls somewhere in the middle, try a treetop adventure full of zip lines and rope courses at Go Ape, 15 minutes from the site.
