Burrs Manor Wild Camping: Views across open fields

General

  • Peaceful wild camping at a farmland site in the Peak District
  • A 15-minute drive from the towns of Buxton and Bakewell
  • Less than an hour from Alton Towers theme park; near the Monsal Trail

Relaxing among green fields, trekking through the hills of the Peak District and settling down of an evening in a traditional village pub… If that sounds like your dream getaway then Burrs Manor Wild Camping, a mile from the village of Chelmorton in the Peak District, should be the very spot for you.

The site is in a top spot for walking and cycling getaways, close to many of the waymarked trails crisscrossing the Peak District. The site is three miles from the start of the Monsal Trail, where you can hire bikes or explore the former railway line on foot or horseback, and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the starts of the High Peak Trail and the Tissington Trail.

You can stay active on site with a game of footgolf (book in advance) or just idle around in the peace and quiet of the countryside farmland, taking in the view over the farmhouse towards the peaks.

To unwind in the evenings, head to the traditional village pub in nearby Chelmorton, a 25-minute walk away, to have a bite to eat and knock one back in the beer garden. If you’d prefer to handle all the cooking yourself, barbecues are welcome on site and the towns of Buxton and Bakewell are nearby when you need to stock up on supplies.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

Fishing is not currently available due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Facilities/activities including footgolf are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Please note, this is a wild camping site and some pitches may be slightly sloped.

Superb wild campsite high up in the heart of the Peak District. Exactly as described, gentle sloping site and the essential facilities. The views are great along with the surrounding rural feel.

The toilets (4 x ) are spotless and hot water in 2 of the 3 sinks. Plenty of toilet roll and paper towels. The single shower block was excellent, with its own toilet and sink and plenty of hooks to hang your clothes up

Marie the site manager in her 4x4 was on site each day to ensure the facilities were clean and that everybody else was fine, super friendly and super approachable.

All in all a great campsite for the money and one that I will be visiting again. Good work

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such, more a heads up. The campsite is high, indeed Chelmorten is the Peaks highest village, so it’s very exposed. The day I arrived it was 18mph winds and stayed that way, made putting the tent up very difficult by myself and was hard to sleep at night. Mother nature hey?

Simplicity, nice large area for group to pitch together. Had basic toilets and hot showers. Reasonably priced.

    Disliked:

The shower had a lot of grass/dirt on the floor, likely that my it was just my timing and it had had heavy use.

Local attractions

There’s lots more to do in the Peak District National Park than follow trails: abseil from the viaduct at Millers Dale, explore the spectacular dams of Derwent Valley or dive below ground at Blue John Cavern – all less than an hour from Burrs Manor.

The nearby towns of Buxton and Bakewell are must-visit spots too: in Buxton, go below the earth’s surface once more at Poole’s Cavern, stand under the stunning Devonshire dome, or stroll through the Pavilion Gardens. And in Bakewell? There’s plenty to see and do here too, but the one thing you must try is a Bakewell pudding...

Plenty of old houses are in the area for historic and cultural days too: Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Tissington Hall are each less than 30 minutes from Burrs Manor, and The Old Manor, White Peak Estate, Little Moreton Hall, Kedleston Hall and Sudbury Hall are all within an hour’s drive.

Too sedate? A more high-octane experience awaits on the rides at Alton Towers theme park, a 50-minute drive from Burrs Manor. For something that falls somewhere in the middle, try a treetop adventure full of zip lines and rope courses at Go Ape, 15 minutes from the site.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (12.9 kilometres)

  • Lyme Park & Gardens (NT) (18.1 kilometres)
