  • Pods on a family-run farm just outside Barrow On Trent
  • Derby, Donington Park and East Midlands airport within a 20-min drive
  • A short walk from three pubs and the River Trent
What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire. No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block and a washing-up area, and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.  Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Camping pod (hot tub, plus)

Liked We enjoyed our stay for one night in one of the pods with a hot tub.
We had been to pudley gorge walking with our 2 dogs so was perfect to be able to stay for 1 night. The pod had everything we needed and the bed was surprisingly comfortable.
Staff were fabulous and we eat at the food shack that was nice and easy after a long day walking.
The loos and showers were good and clean.
We walked along the river in the morning and it was beautiful.
We would definitely stay again.

Disliked Unfortunately the hot tub hadn’t been properly cleaned and the were lots of bits that looked like dead skin floating in the water. It put us off using it and was late by the time we noticed.
I understand that things can get missed or maybe it was the filters that needed changed.
No camp shop on site to get essentials.

Bell tent (hot tub, plus)

Liked Our spot was in a corner so perfect for us, loved the hot tub, easy and quick to light. Lots of wood provided for hot tub. Great location, supermarket short drive away, we walked to one of the local pubs to eat.
Outdoor showers were great as were the toilets. Preferred them to the indoor ones. Great having a food truck on site. Lots of space, safe for children. Would definitely return. Had a great time.

Disliked Bbq had seen better days, it was very wobbly. We had to be very careful using it. They did say they were due to be replaced at some point.

Camping pod (hot tub)

Liked Another wonderful stay at Hill Farm, this time in a camping pod. Staff are the friendliest people you’ll find. Pod was well equipped - we had arrived with lots of items for cooking but didn’t need hardly any of it. Chopping boards, glasses, cutlery, fridge etc all there for you. Hot tub was amazing and was hot when we got there. Lovely comfy bed and tons of room in the pod. Toilets and showers all good, and we tried the food van for brek too. Dog friendly so we could bring my Jack Russell who also had a fab time! We’ll be back again!

Bell tent (hot tub, plus)

Liked We stayed as a group of 6 women celebrating our friends birthday. We had a fantastic stay. Hot tub was definitely a big bonus for us. Check in was really smooth, we called the number that is on the fence as you enter the site and we were greeted and taken to our tent. Hot tub was explained to us on how to use and heat but the lady got this started for us and even came back later when we couldn’t get it to relight. Toilet facilities and showers were kept clean. All beds were really comfortable . Fridge with small freezer compartment which was perfect for us. Kettle, heater and even cups and crockery were in the baskets next to fridge but we’d taken our own We had a great stay and wish we’d booked more than one night. Thank you.

Local attractions

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).  For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).  In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).
