What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire. No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block and a washing-up area, and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.  Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Gostou Very clean, friendly staff and bell tent was beautiful! Very local to a pub that can walk to, and we all loved having a hot drink from the breakfast van in the morning! Hot tub was lovely!

Gostou Warm & smiley welcome on arrival, lovely and clean neat tidy pod, everything you would need really in one place.
Clean and tidy bathroom facilities! Shacks too.
Hot tub was lush easy to manage heat.
We had lovely stay overall specially for last minute decision, we definitely be back with the children next time.
Bonus with food van , even after meal out. We ended up late pizza and again for breakfast in the morning

Gostou Outstanding site to stay on! Ellie the young lass who looks after the site is an amazing employee! Planned my pod out perfectly to carry out a proposal to my partner. I couldn't thank her any more! I will be coming here in the future at least once or twice a year!

Gostou When we arrived we was met by the host that was very friendly and helpful, the site is so lovely and quiet, the glamping pod we stayed in met all our needs and the hot tub was superb, we had breakfast from the on site burger wagon, that was nice, the toilets, showers etc were spotless, we had a very relaxing stay, we will be returning, hopefully for longer next time.

Gostou Shower and facilities were clean and warm. The bell tents were clean, comfortable and warm. The hot tub was brilliant with free logs, kindling, firefighters provided. There were lovely country walks available. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would 100% recommend this campsite, the campsite it’s self was in a lovely and in a great location to providing relaxation and beautiful surroundings. The pizza made on site was made to order and tased delicious.

Não gostou Would have been nice to have had fire pits readily available, but this is not a dislike it just felt missing. Only real dislike was how close the bell tents and cabins are to one another as it takes away from the privacy a little, although one set of our neighbours were lovely, one was not so nice and chose to steal free firewood and kindling that were free and provided by the campsite while we were on a walk, however again, with the accommodating staff this was quickly replenished with an apology.

Gostou We enjoyed our stay for one night in one of the pods with a hot tub.
We had been to pudley gorge walking with our 2 dogs so was perfect to be able to stay for 1 night. The pod had everything we needed and the bed was surprisingly comfortable.
Staff were fabulous and we eat at the food shack that was nice and easy after a long day walking.
The loos and showers were good and clean.
We walked along the river in the morning and it was beautiful.
We would definitely stay again.

Não gostou Unfortunately the hot tub hadn’t been properly cleaned and the were lots of bits that looked like dead skin floating in the water. It put us off using it and was late by the time we noticed.
I understand that things can get missed or maybe it was the filters that needed changed.
No camp shop on site to get essentials.

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).  For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).  In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).
