General

  • Pods on a family-run farm just outside Barrow On Trent
  • Derby, Donington Park and East Midlands airport within a 20-min drive
  • A short walk from three pubs and the River Trent

What better way to start (or end, or spend) the day than with a waterside wander? Barrow On Trent, between the meandering River Trent and the historic Trent and Mersey canal, is especially well-placed for scenic rural rambles (accompanied by a well-behaved dog, if you’ve got one looking like it needs a hol). In the middle of these green surrounds, the peaceful fields of Hill Farm Caravan and Camping Site make a great base for hols in this quiet corner of Derbyshire.

No matter when you come, stays in this family-run site's pods should be nice and cosy – each one is insulated and has electric heating included to keep guests toasty on chillier nights. Guests also have access to a smart toilet and shower block and a washing-up area, and are welcome to set up a barbecue for a spot of alfresco cooking.

Other dining options include the three local pubs that can be reached on foot or heading 20 minutes by car into Derby to peruse the city's range of restaurants and takeaways. Need to burn off last night's meal? Help is at hand: make tracks for the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive) or lace up your boots and head for the moors and valleys of the Peak District (50 minutes).

Locations nice, pretty quiet at night, cosy with the heater on, modern toilets, pub down the road is very nice

    Disliked:

Interiors not the best, it’s just two single beds that aren’t comfy, there was strands of grass growing inside the pod and can see visible gaps in the wood, no tv or anything pretty empty compared to others I’ve stayed in. Floor looked dusty like it wasn’t cleaned before we stayed. Wouldn’t come back I don’t think

From the manager...

Many thanks for your feedback.
The beds are single and we have noticed from feedback that some customers would prefer doubles. With this in mind we will shortly be installing double beds, in half our pods, similar in specification to those in our Bell Tents.
Whilst the timber construction of the pods shrinks and expands slightly with the seasons we have been unable to find any gaps which allow grass in to any of the pods, they appear to be adequately sealed although we will keep a close eye on this.
It is worth noting that we do not offer televisions in any of our accommodation, we have not seen the demand for this in the past. Wifi is also not provided, we are currently looking into the viability of providing this on site.
Last but not least, we are disappointed that you found the floor dusty. We take cleanliness here very seriously and will review our procedures to see if improvements can be made.
Once again, many thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site and is valuable in indicating where we can improve procedures and target future investment in the accommodation.
Kind regards,

Ollie Cotton

Friendly welcome when we arrived. We hired a bell tent and a Pod and asked to be next to each other and this special request was granted. Great experience to have heating, electric and beds. Might be converted glamping! Shower and washing up facilities good.

Local attractions

Barrow On Trent may be a peaceful spot, but if day trips are your thing you’ll likely appreciate its excellent transport links: major roads like the A50, A6 and M1 are all within easy reach. The local area's got a lot going for it, too: anglers can spend their days at nearby Robinwood Lakes (10 minutes' drive), while speed demons can zoom down to Donington Park race circuit (15 minutes) or East Midlands Aeropark (20 minutes). For more high-adrenaline adventure, head to the classic rides at Alton Towers theme park (40 minutes).

For days spent at a gentler pace, head to the house and grounds at Elvaston Castle Country Park (15 minutes) or the National Trust's Calke Abbey (15 minutes). More history is on hand at Derby's Pickford House Museum (20 minutes) – swing by here to try on some Regency costumes (if you think you can pull them off).

In need of some nature therapy? Head for the Peaks for walks in the spectacular valleys around Dovedale (50 minutes) or bracing hilly hikes like the Win Hill trail (about an hour and a quarter). For an unconventional stroll closer to base, pencil in a date with the Charnwood Forest alpacas (20 minutes).

Must see

  • Royal Crown Derby Factory Shop (5.8 kilometers)
  • Calke Abbey (7.4 kilometers)
  • Castle Donington Museum (9.0 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Calke Abbey (6.2 kilometers)
  • Staunton Harold Church (9.7 kilometers)
