Summer camping at castle howard lakeside holiday park

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • Half an hour's walk or a five-minute drive from Castle Howard
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. While there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here, active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The area. Cycling around. The views were amazing. Very peaceful on our daily walk by the lake. Cycled up to the Yorkshire Arboretum which was gorgeous. Handy for getting to Malton and other locations. As it was mother's day family visited and it was lovely to see the grandchildren playing in the field. Also to be able to go out to eat in Yedingham after visiting Malton.

Disliked: No wifi but was able to use my phone although coverage is poor for some networks. Not really a dislike but need to be aware

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Me and my friend booked this site for a couple of nights camp on the non electric pitches. On arrival the lady was very friendly, polite and really helpful, so finding our pitch was really easy. The pitches were great (shame about the weather), with loads of room and were clean and tidy and well kept with great views of the lake. The site itself was very clean and tidy and again really well kept. The male bathrooms were lovely and warm and really clean, with lovely warm showers. The on site shop in reception was well stocked and well presented. The location of the site is great, with a 20 minute walk to castle Howard itself. If you fancy taking in a bit more scenery rewarded by a fantastic pub lunch, another 30 minute walk from there will land you in the Crown & Cushion in Welburn. The food in there is amazing, and the portion sizes are huge! Really friendly village pub with lovely friendly staff who can’t do enough for you. Plus there’s an open log fire which is perfect this time of year ! If you don’t fancy walking it’s a 5 minute drive to get there from the site. Even though the weather wasn’t great, I really loved this site as has everything you need for a quiet relaxing stay away from the daily hustle and bustle. I will definitely be returning !

From the manager: A very detailed and positive review Jermaine. Thank you. We hope that next time you visit the weather will be kinder!

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
