General

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • A 15-minute walk to Castle Howard; 15 minutes' drive to Kirkham Abbey
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop

Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, make your way to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for a special stay with a backdrop of one of Yorkshire's (and indeed the UK's) finest country estates.

Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival.

The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room.

Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (perhaps looking out for swans and other wildlife), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Day trips to the city of York and the stunning North Yorkshire coastline can certainly be on the cards here too – and rather handily, guests can also claim discounted entrance to Castle Howard itself.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Single-sex bookings of 2 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

We arrived at reception and the check in was the easiest ever, gave our surname and immediately given our pitch number and details of where essentials were. The site was easy to access, well signed from the road and nice and flat for the caravan. We could walk by the lake and see views of Castle Howard. Milton is 5 miles away turning right out of the site which has plenty of shops to amuse as our stay was rainy! We didn’t use the shower block as I prefer to use our caravan shower but I checked it out and it looked clean and well kept.

Lovely location. Pitches large and laid out well. Very friendly welcome. Facilities clean heated. Lovely walks around the location.

    Disliked:

The only slight downside which bothered me was the facilities. The sinks in the ladies toilet block were sited very high on the wall which made it awkward to wash your hands. Even though the showers and toilets were very clean...there was a bad smell in the block and it wasn't obvious where it was coming from.
All things considered, it was a great site and very good value.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river.

Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars).

Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
