  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • A 30-minute walk to Castle Howard; 15 minutes' drive to Kirkham Abbey
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop
Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, make your way to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for a special stay with a backdrop of one of Yorkshire's (and indeed the UK's) finest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (perhaps looking out for swans and other wildlife), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Day trips to the city of York and the stunning North Yorkshire coastline can certainly be on the cards here too – and rather handily, guests can also claim discounted entrance to Castle Howard itself.

Liked: Pitches 1 to 10 seemed to be for adults only which is something we really liked. Great location with lovely waljs around the lake.

Disliked: A group of teenagers making a lot of noise at 11pm and later. They also made a mess of the toilet block, throwing toilet paper everywhere The staff did their best to keep cleaning up after them.

From the manager: Many thanks for your review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay in our lovely location and walks around the lake. We are sorry to hear that you experienced problems with other guests on site. A warden is on site over weekends during the busy periods and I appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention.

Liked: Beautiful, quiet site. Lovely location next to the lake and Castle Howard. We only stayed for 1 night on our road trip up to Scotland. Facilities were nice enough, as expected with plenty of hot showers.

Liked: Excellent Clean, tidy and peaceful site in beautiful surroundings, lots of wildlife and lovely lakeside walk with views of Castle Howard. Toilet facilities very clean with nice showers although a little cramped. Delicious fish and chips from the visiting chip van. All in all a great stay.

Disliked: No internet or TV signal as area is very remote. No shop on site. Nearby farm shotgun sounds heard from 7am in mornings, presumably to scare away crows.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We're happy to know you enjoyed your stay at our clean and peaceful site. Lakeside is in a rural setting and our guests enjoy getting close to nature, dark skies for star gazing and our beautiful location.

Liked: The site was well looked after, nicely spaced pitches. Our pitch was level. The shower amenities were clean and tidy. Friendly reception staff.

Disliked: Albeit the showers/toilets were clean and tidy both the shower cubicle and toilet cubicles are a tad small. Only 2 washing up sinks which if the site is full is not enough to cope.

From the manager: We appreciate you taking the time to leave a review and we're pleased to hear you enjoyed our well looked after site and friendly staff. Thanks for your feedback regarding the showers and toilet cubicles and washing up sinks. We will let the relevant teams know. We hope to see you again in future.

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
