Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park: A recent Airstream Rally had a great weekend with us

General

  • Well-maintained site with views over Castle Howard's Great Lake
  • A 15-minute walk to Castle Howard; 15 minutes' drive to Kirkham Abbey
  • Fishing and dog-walking area on site; close to a café and farm shop

Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, make your way to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for a special stay with a backdrop of one of Yorkshire's (and indeed the UK's) finest country estates.

Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival.

The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups let off a little steam, and it's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room.

Though there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here (perhaps looking out for swans and other wildlife), active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Day trips to the city of York and the stunning North Yorkshire coastline can certainly be on the cards here too – and rather handily, guests can also claim discounted entrance to Castle Howard itself.

Being told off like we were naughty school kids, not being told which pitch to park on before we arrived because we didn't arrive till late and were then accused of parking in the the wrong pitch.
Being accused of being too loud and my daughter having a voice and laugh like a boom box
The site it's self is nice but is in a internet and TV black spot. If we have to be in bed by 1030. It would be good to have options.

Quiet site, must be beautiful in the sunshine
No lights so it was nicely rural feel, take a torch and you’ll be fine
Lovely peaceful place to wake up
Loo block has good wash up and laundry room
Plenty of bins and recycling facilities
    No 4G which was welcome

    Disliked:

The EHU was a way from the van across soggy ground
Having arrived in the dark I was grateful to the neighbouring van that turned their headlights on as I walked across to hook up. First time I’ve needed full length of cable
The disabled shower needed a special key and as I arrived late I didn’t want to trouble manager. Standard shower has no chair which is an issue for me

Very quite at this time of year , with plenty of pitch choices .

    Disliked:

There was no lighting on site , it was pitch black, so as a woman I felt quite uneasy using the toilet facilities at night . Also there were no dog waste bins other than on the field especially for dogs to supposedly let off steam but they still had to be kept on a lead at all times . We'd also have liked to walk round the lake but sadly dogs weren't allowed , god knows why as the only way to see castle howard from the site was to go up onto the bank , you couldn't actually see it as it states when booking . A shop would be beneficial too as it was quite a big site including the statics on there , im sure it would be a godsend to alot of people during there stay . Other than castle howard there's nothing else to do without travelling miles so not an ideal spot if wanting to see other attractions , so unless bringing a second vehicle your screwed and I wouldn't recommended booking a long stay here especially if travelling with children

Local attractions

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river.

Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars).

Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
