General

  • Friendly and relaxed riverside campsite
  • On the banks of the River Tryweryn in Snowdonia National Park
  • A short drive to Bala Lake

Right by a river in Snowdonia National Park… that sounds just pretty perfect.

Gwynedd's Tyn Cornel Camping is on the banks of the River Tryweryn, right next to the National White Water Centre if your Welsh holiday requirements include whitewater rafting, and four miles from more watery antics at Bala Lake. Mountain biking, climbing and hiking are easy to access from here too – and as you might expect in this part of the world, this woodland-bordered site is set in spectacularly scenic surrounds...

If you're not feeling overly active, have a hol here to be within reach of the attractions of the national park and into the whole of north Wales: you'll find castles, museums, historic houses, steam railways, handsome old villages and – most important – Michelin star eating out for foodies.

Tyn Cornel has modern and well-kept facilities, including free hot showers, a laundry and a covered washing-up area. Dogs are welcome and there's an exercise area to let them let off steam.

Barbecues are encouraged across the whole site: just use them on the blocks provided to raise them off the ground.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please kindly note that campfires are only allowed in the firepits provided, using wood purchased on site.

The firepits are free to hire, with a returnable deposit of £100, and should be requested in advance if possible. Firepit hire is not guaranteed as there is a limited number on site.

Fires are only allowed in the non-electric field.

Very friendly warm welcome by woman on site, nice even camping pitches & a great idea to have the picnic benches around the campsite. Toilets were extremely clean & well looked after. Also great wifi coverage even at the furthest pitch so we could get online and plan our activities for the next day!

From arrival we found the site staff very friendly, helpful and informative, from offers to help pitch the tent (as I had arrived first and was on my own) to the offer of a hot water bottle one evening and the recommendation of a great ice-cream shop in Bala.

The site is well set out, very clean, and has plenty of covered picnic benches, the poshest camp site loos I have ever used, and a great shower block with free hot showers. There is also a laundry room with dryer and a freezer for cool blocks by the main reception as well as hot water point for washing dishes.

For a fairly small site it has all the essentials and more. Really handy for outdoor pursuits or for enjoying a quiet weekend around Bala lake.

Can't comment on child friendliness as we didn't take children but there were plenty of families with older children on site.

We have camped around the country for over 30 years and this is a site that really impressed us and we will definitely be returning next year.

    Disliked:

Nothing! Even though we arrived at the end of a very wet week and were unable to park next to the tent, the site staff were good at explaining why this was not possible, had hand carts to help transport everything from the car to the pitch and were obviously committed to keeping the site from becoming a sodden mess.

The chap in the reception was very welcoming and explained everything we needed to know, and showed us to our pitch (we got to choose from a few as there weren't many up yet). We have a little one potty trained and as requested we were put in the area with toilets close by (porta-loos that were clean and had plenty of loo roll and soap). The facilities were lovely and clean...and warm! Very pleasing after a rather chilly night in the tent. Only 10 minutes outside of Bala and very picturesque setting and the ground held up we'll despite lots of rain. Cars restricted during the evening and very twisty gravelly roads so cars have to go slow (meaning the toddler had no chance of running into one). You can walk to the water sorts centre from the camp. WiFi was top notch where we were but we're warned it could be spotty (absolutely no phone signal though) If you turn right out of the camp and drive for about two minutes there's a cafe called Caffi Frongoch which does a fab breakfast!

    Disliked:

Although the camp had lots of rules, I'm not sure they were stringently enforced, we had a very rowdy tent nearby that went til almost 2am. Had to avoid some rocky ground but as the pitch was large it was hardly a problem.

Local attractions

Tyn Cornel Camping is in prime location for exploring Snowdonia National Park, whether you're after an active holiday in north Wales or want to chill in spectacular surroundings with occasional trips out to local attractions.

For active types, National White Water Centre is metres away; the river rapids run past the campsite and a river access ramp is on site. If you've never tried whitewater rafting before this is the place to do it, as well as to tackle kayaking or canoeing year-round. For more action, Surf Snowdonia, Zip World and Bounce Below are all a short trip away.

Walks? Pick from an easy riverside walk straight from the site, the craggy local peak of Arenig Fawr, or ascents like Snowdon or Cadair Idris within easy driving distance.

For biking, some of the UK's best-rated mountain biking trails including Coed y Brenin and Penmachno are within a 30-minute drive, while for road cycling the area is filled with quiet, winding country roads, some stiff climbs and consistently fab views. Family cycling trips can be had at the Mawddach Trail, Llandegla or Llyn Brenig.

The Tyn Cornel team also highly recommends castles including Harlech Castle and Criccieth Castle on the coast; the local narrow gauge railways with spectacular views including the famed Snowdon Mountain Railway and the local Bala Lake Railway; the Italianate setting and buildings of Portmeirion village; the local ales, pub food, takeaways or fine restaurant meals in Bala; Michelin star fine dining at Tyddyn Llan or Llandrillo...
