General

  • Friendly and relaxed riverside campsite
  • On the banks of the River Tryweryn in Snowdonia National Park
  • A short drive to Bala Lake

Right by a river in Snowdonia National Park… that sounds just pretty perfect.

Gwynedd's Tyn Cornel Camping is on the banks of the River Tryweryn, right next to the National White Water Centre if your Welsh holiday requirements include whitewater rafting, and four miles from more watery antics at Bala Lake. Mountain biking, climbing and hiking are easy to access from here too – and as you might expect in this part of the world, this woodland-bordered site is set in spectacularly scenic surrounds...

If you're not feeling overly active, have a hol here to be within reach of the attractions of the national park and into the whole of north Wales: you'll find castles, museums, historic houses, steam railways, handsome old villages and – most important – Michelin star eating out for foodies.

Tyn Cornel has modern and well-kept facilities, including free hot showers, a laundry and a covered washing-up area. Dogs are welcome and there's an exercise area to let them let off steam.

Barbecues are encouraged across the whole site: just use them on the blocks provided to raise them off the ground.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 6 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Please kindly note that campfires are only allowed in the firepits provided, using wood purchased on site.

The firepits are free to hire, with a returnable deposit of £100, and should be requested in advance if possible. Firepit hire is not guaranteed as there is a limited number on site.

Fires are only allowed in the non-electric field.

Immaculately kept site and great location.
We have just stayed for two nights in a tent with an electric hook up and would highly recommend this site. The first thing that struck me was how well maintained the site is - beautifully well kept and such a picturesque setting by the river. The shower block is also of a very high standard, very clean, modern and spacious. The washing up area is also nice. The is also a small shop on site. From the site there is a lovely riverside walk up to the National White Water Centre which has a great cafe and seating outside to watch the activities on the water. Will definitely be back to this site.

The usual blight of many a site - Midges!

Loved the site , very friendly and peaceful.
We walked along the river and ate at the cafe and watched the rafters so we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, nice to have a few things we could buy onsite i.e. Insect repellant and ice creams.
Liked the small area we were on , made it easier with the dogs .
    They enjoyed their walks too.
Facilities very clean but limited. Loved the hot shower in the evening.
Loved the clean grass side of our pitch and loved the well manicured grass areas.
Loved the free wifi so we could watch tv on our iPads.

    Disliked:

Midges or thunder flies not sure what they were but they invaded our motor home even when we had our fly screens up all the time.
Couldn't sit out side the van without the midges.
Did not know where to release our grey water waste.
Did not enjoy the shower in the morning as it was cold!!!!
Our pitch was not level but we were able to use our chocks to level it.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review - we are really sorry that you had a cold shower! Our boiler conked out briefly due to getting too hot (would you believe it) during the recent heatwave, and we thought we had managed to talk to all the guests who might have been affected that morning, but it seems we didn't catch you. Please accept our sincere apologies for this. Best Wishes Isi & Stu

Stuart and Isi are great hosts at the site. Both helpful and knowledgeable. You have the use of fridge and freezer, ice blocks and fire pits. The guys even charged my phone for a donation to the air ambulance which I was happy to give.
The amenities are modern and kept very clean. Tent field are flat and well kept.
Good spot for exploring the area, Bala and its lake as well as Barmouth where we spent a day along with a day in Portmeirion, each were lovely.
A visit to Stori in Bala itself is a must, while it sells all manor of alcohol to suit everyone's taste its the tap room that we enjoyed the most. You could while away the hours sampling a variety of beers, ciders, wines etc in a lovely atmosphere with great hosts. Once you have had you fill you can take home a few of your favourites. To top it all you can keep in touch with the outside world on you phone (if you feel the need) with free WIFI.

    Disliked:

The midgies - wouldn't stop us going back though

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review - we really appreciate it. It was great to meet you both and to have you to stay - we're so pleased you had a good time. A trip to Stori is a must, we agree! Best Wishes Isi & Stu

A lovely site with friendly owners.
So helpful! Owners sorted out restaurants, walks and activities for us, they really couldn't do more for you.
Stayed on a electric hook up pitch with a tent, although the tent field is much nicer.
Cute picnic tables in tent field
    Free fire pit hire
    Flat site
    Cute site branding
Plenty of showers, toilets and washing up facilities
    Walkable to watersports centre

    Disliked:

Midges! So many of them being next to the river. Seriously, take some jungle strength repellent and anything else that would get rid of them. We didn't sit outside as it was that bad and got bitten so bad!
Shame you can't have fires in the hook up field like on other sites but understand why.

From the manager...

Thank you Helena - it was lovely to meet you all and to have you to stay. Sorry about the midges - wish we could get rid of the little blighters! Thanks again, and Best Wishes Isi & Stu

Local attractions

Tyn Cornel Camping is in prime location for exploring Snowdonia National Park, whether you're after an active holiday in north Wales or want to chill in spectacular surroundings with occasional trips out to local attractions.

For active types, National White Water Centre is metres away; the river rapids run past the campsite and a river access ramp is on site. If you've never tried whitewater rafting before this is the place to do it, as well as to tackle kayaking or canoeing year-round. For more action, Surf Snowdonia, Zip World and Bounce Below are all a short trip away.

Walks? Pick from an easy riverside walk straight from the site, the craggy local peak of Arenig Fawr, or ascents like Snowdon or Cadair Idris within easy driving distance.

For biking, some of the UK's best-rated mountain biking trails including Coed y Brenin and Penmachno are within a 30-minute drive, while for road cycling the area is filled with quiet, winding country roads, some stiff climbs and consistently fab views. Family cycling trips can be had at the Mawddach Trail, Llandegla or Llyn Brenig.

The Tyn Cornel team also highly recommends castles including Harlech Castle and Criccieth Castle on the coast; the local narrow gauge railways with spectacular views including the famed Snowdon Mountain Railway and the local Bala Lake Railway; the Italianate setting and buildings of Portmeirion village; the local ales, pub food, takeaways or fine restaurant meals in Bala; Michelin star fine dining at Tyddyn Llan or Llandrillo...
