You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the national park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive) or climb Eryri's mountains. If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few balls as you go, head to the golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

Rhosyn Prospector Castle ready tent

Liked Clean toilets great facilities great location

Disliked Staff were very rude. I appreciate that it’s a quiet camp site however the delivery approach was intimidating and unnecessarily rude. For the duration of our stay (2 nights) we felt we had to whisper conversations to avoid being approached by rudeness. The pitches were also very close to each other which I assume is why staff were very itchy about any noise. This place was far too full and crowded.

We're very sorry to read that your experience with our team left you feeling uncomfortable. This is certainly not the impression we want any of our guests to have. As a quiet campsite, we do ask guests to be mindful of noise so that everyone can enjoy a peaceful stay, and we are always mindful to communicate this in a polite and respectful manner. However, it can be frustrating when guests do not adhere to the 10:30pm quiet time when staying on a family site.

We appreciate your comments regarding the spacing of the pitches and how busy the site felt during your visit. All pitches have the legal allocated space between them, the site is not 'too full' just full as we are a popular and busy site, especially during the school holidays. The reason we are keen on adhering to the noise policy is to ensure all our guests have the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful night's sleep.

Thank you again for your feedback, and we hope you might consider giving us another opportunity to provide you with a more enjoyable stay in the future.

Little Green shepherd's hut

Liked The facilities are great and the location is lovely, right near a nice little town and only an hour to Watkins walk.

Our huts/tents were nice enough. we had no complaints about the accommodation whatsoever.

Disliked The rules on noise after 10:30pm are enforced very strictly. On both nights we were spoken to quite rudely by the owners/managers for talking while playing board games with quiet background music. On the second night, we were even told we had to go to bed.

This was particularly disappointing as we were celebrating a birthday and are far from a rowdy group. The advertising feels a little misleading, as this is not a site I’d recommend for groups planning to socialise into the evening. Even hush tones are not permitted after 10.30, even on Fridays and Saturdays, so it seems. This site seems much better suited to families than group holidays.

We also found the staff surprisingly rude throughout our stay. Check-in is only available after 4pm, yet staff leave at 5pm, which is a very narrow window for anyone travelling a long distance. Combined with the way we were spoken to about the noise, despite us being very respectful and having paid a significant amount to stay there, it left a poor overall impression.

This applies equally to all guests, including weekends, and includes conversations and music that may carry across the site at night. While we appreciate that you were celebrating a birthday and did not consider yourselves a noisy group, we do have a responsibility to balance everyone's enjoyment of the site.

We're disappointed to hear that you felt our team were rude. It is never our intention to make guests feel unwelcome, and we will review your comments with the team. However, when quiet hours are not being observed, our staff are required to intervene to protect the experience of other guests.

Regarding check-in, our staffed reception operates between 9am and 5pm, and this information is provided before arrival. For anyone who anticipates arriving later, we encourage getting in touch before arrival so we can arrange a self-check-in where possible.

We appreciate your feedback and understand that our peaceful, family-friendly environment may not be the right fit for every type of group or celebration. We wish you all the best in finding accommodation that better suits your preferences in the future.

Liked Beautiful site, well maintained and facilities really clean and modern. Luxury pitches are really cute and private. We loved the fire pit. 15 minutes leisurely walk into Bala. Lake was gorgeous.

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
