  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway
  • Within walking distance of Bala’s shops, restaurants and golf course
Got Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the national park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive) or climb Eryri's mountains. If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few balls as you go, head to the golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

What customers say

Pen y Bont is a beautifully maintained and clean campsite offering a friendly atmosphere and excellent facilities, particularly the modern, spotlessly clean shower and toilet blocks. Guests consistently praise the helpful staff and the convenient location, just a short walk from Bala Lake and town centre, making it ideal for exploring the area's natural beauty and activities. While minor points like WiFi reliability and occasional road noise were mentioned, the overwhelming feedback highlights a high-quality, welcoming experience.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, very much appreciated. We are so glad that you liked our facilities and we try and cater for most needs in the shop. We are sorry that you had a disruptive evening but unfortunatley if we are not made aware of the situation at the time there is not a lot we can do. The warden is around on the site until 11.00pm but after this time there is an emergency number on the reception door to call if there are any problems.

Little Green shepherd's hut

Liked One of the best campsites I've ever stayed at! The campsite is immaculate, peaceful with brilliant showering facilities. The complimentory toiletries added a spot of luxury to my stay. I recieved a warm welcome upon arrival and the owners/family were friendly throughout my stay.

I stayed in the shepherds hut which was cosy and well equipt. Dog friendly, with footpaths from the site to Bala.

I would definitely recommend a walk down to visit the Bala railway which is also dog friendly with stunning views of the lake.

I would love to return in the future with the whole family.

Disliked No complaints.
Though if I come back I might bring a fold out stool for the washing up sinks which were a bit high for me.... or I could bring my husband and put him on washing up duty.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your kind words and it was a pleasure to meet yourself and Gray! We shall have some Welsh Lessons next time you visit. Thank you again for taking the time to leave us a review we really do appreciate it.

Many thanks

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
