Got Snowdonia National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the Snowdonia National Park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive), climb Snowdonia’s mountains or catch a few swells at the surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few holes as you go, there’s a golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

Liked Great facilities. Immaculate. Location is perfect. We like how the layout of the place. Nice view and spacious for each campers. Toilets are clean with free supplies (shampoo/body wash, conditioner, handwash). Will surely come back here.

Liked We have a wonderful 3 night stay with our 2 year old daughter. Medium pitch was perfect and in a lovely location. From the moment we arrived we couldn't fault this place. Immaculate toilet, shower, washing up area. Better than some hotels. Not over crowded and noisy like some. Lots of people just enjoying their holiday. Fire pits available to use and we even had the best ice cream can visit on our last night. Great location we visited llangolen & Bwetsy coed both a 30 minute drive

Liked Very nice setting, especially the pitch we got. Friendly and very helpful service from the member of staff there. Washroom, toilets etc brilliant. Close to lake bala, will come again, thank you

Little Green shepherd's hut

Liked Excellent small, well tended site, with decent sized pitches, and glamping available, we stayed in a simple but more than adequate shepherds hut. Reasonable shop on site, washing & toilet facilities excellent. Short walk to Bala village & lake.

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
