  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway
  • Within walking distance of Bala’s shops, restaurants and golf course
Got Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the national park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive) or climb Eryri's mountains. If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few balls as you go, head to the golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

What customers say

Pen Y Bont is highly praised for its excellent, immaculately clean facilities, particularly the modern shower and toilet blocks. Guests consistently highlight the friendly and helpful staff, the beautiful location with easy walking access to Bala Lake and town, and the well-maintained, spacious pitches. While most visitors had no significant dislikes, some noted occasional road noise on pitches near the entrance or main road, and occasional queues for facilities during peak times. WiFi connectivity was also mentioned as being variable. Many reviewers expressed their intention to return.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed our clean shower and toilet facilities, the peaceful location, and that you would recommend us to friends.

We're sorry to hear you wouldn't choose to visit again. We appreciate your feedback about the hard ground and the limited activities for younger children. We understand that families with young children may be looking for more on-site entertainment and while we do not have anything specifically on site, the surrounding area has so much to offer. Your comments are valuable and will be taken into consideration as we continue to improve our guests' experience.

We appreciate your feedback and hope you might consider visiting us again in the future.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked Lovely site, good clean facilities. Lovely touch of having shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in the showers and the soft close door so no worries of it banging late at night. Nice little shop on site. Staff really friendly and helpful. Couple minutes walk to the lake, about 25 into town. And very close to the Bala railway, which is a must to visit. Lots of air activity from the jets gojng through the mach loop, which the one dog hated.

Disliked Having to leave to go home.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review! We're delighted to hear you enjoyed our clean facilities, the complimentary shower products, and the soft-close doors—we added those little touches to make everyone's stay as comfortable as possible.

It's great to know you found our team friendly and helpful, enjoyed the on-site shop, and made the most of the local attractions, including the lake and the Bala Railway. The Mach Loop certainly makes for an exciting spectacle, although we completely understand that it can be a bit much for some four-legged visitors!

We're especially pleased that your only disappointment was having to head home. We hope to welcome you back again soon for another relaxing stay!

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
