Got Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the national park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive) or climb Eryri's mountains. If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few balls as you go, head to the golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

What customers say

Pen Y Bont is highly praised for its clean, well-maintained facilities, particularly the modern shower and toilet blocks. Guests consistently highlight the friendly and helpful staff, spacious pitches, and convenient location within walking distance of Bala Lake and town. While most visitors found the site peaceful, a few noted occasional road noise or disturbances from other guests. Some mentioned limited on-site activities for children and occasional WiFi issues, but overall feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing a desire to return.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked We recently stayed at Pen Y Bont Campsite for the first time, and it definitely won’t be our last. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful, making us feel right at home.

The facilities were excellent. The shower blocks were spotless, with shampoo and body wash provided, which was a really nice touch. Having your own sink area to shave, brush your teeth and get ready made everything feel much more comfortable. The washing-up facilities were also great, and having an on-site laundrette was really useful for a longer stay.

The entire site was exceptionally well maintained, and you could see the facilities were cleaned regularly throughout the day. The Wi-Fi was a little hit and miss, but honestly, when you’re camping it’s nice to disconnect from the world for a while, so it really wasn’t an issue for us.

The location is fantastic too. We walked into Bala, which took around 15–20 minutes, enjoying beautiful views of Bala Lake along the way. Bala itself has plenty of lovely independent shops, cafés and places to explore.

One of the highlights of our trip was paddleboarding on Bala Lake. Parking was reasonably priced, and the paddleboarding pass was great value too, making it an affordable and memorable day out.

Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better campsite. Fantastic facilities, a beautiful location, and genuinely lovely staff. We’d happily stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Pen Y Bont Campsite to anyone visiting the area.

Liked Clean, tidy, well kept and landscaped. Our pitch was out of the way in the little nook which was perfect for us. Perfect start when a lovely lady greeted us at reception on arrival. Will definitely be back for a longer stay next time!

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked It is a lovely clean site with very welcoming staff. Shop is small but well stocked.
Anyone who is a fan of military planes, some flew past the site which was amazing to see, especially as we didn’t expect it the first time so was a very loud shock but exciting non the less.
The site is very close to the lake, we drove due to disability issues but took a few minutes to get there so nice and close if you fancied taking a paddle board or canoe along.
The shower and toilet block was kept very clean and well stocked with toilet tissue and soap. They also provide shampoo and conditioner in the showers along with body wash which smelt lovely. There are 3 showers available, and then 3 sinks in their own cubicle. Then there were 4 toilets and a couple hand washing sinks available too. Our teenage daughter loved it the fact there is heated flooring in the bathrooms! There is also a family/disabled toilet and shower room which is very spacious too.
The pitches are well maintained, and even though the site was full when we were there, you did not feel crammed in. I think each pitch had a picnic table allocated to it, which is good to know in advance as you can leave your camping table at home.
There were wood fire pizzas available on a Friday night which were very tasty, it was £70 for 5 pizzas, so not too pricey in comparison to how much things cost nowadays, and was nice to be able to have dinner sorted given we arrived on the Friday and cooking was the last thing we wanted to do after our drive to the site and then setting the tent up!
There is free WiFi on site too, which was handy for us as our service was a bit intermittent at times!
Lots of wildlife too for those who enjoy that. The site is surrounded by trees and mountains, and the field next to the site had sheep in it which were a lovely wake up call. We also had a hedgehog snuffling around our tent on a couple of occasions too which was very cute.

Disliked Not much to say other than the bins seemed always full. I am aware we stayed during the school holidays, but maybe a couple more bins or more frequent emptying of the bins could be sorted during busier periods.
Also maybe a little play area for children could be put up. There are no ball games allowed for children, but a little section fenced off for ball games and a swing or two would be lovely for families to use, as there are many families who stayed on the site and so just a suggestion. The two things I’ve listed here wouldn’t stop us from staying again however, they are just minor suggestions :)

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful and detailed review. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and appreciated our clean facilities, spacious pitches, friendly team, and little extras such as the complimentary toiletries, heated bathroom floors, WiFi, and Friday night's wood-fired pizzas. It's wonderful to know you made the most of the beautiful surroundings, the nearby lake, and even got to enjoy the military aircraft flyovers and local wildlife!
We also really appreciate your constructive feedback. You're absolutely right that during our busiest periods, the bins can fill up more quickly than we'd like, and we'll continue to review our collection schedule to help keep on top of this.
Thank you as well for your suggestion about a children's play area. We always welcome ideas from our guests but unfortunately we just don't have the space for a play area on site - however, we can recommend some good ones just a short walk from the site.
It means a great deal to hear that your suggestions wouldn't stop you from returning, and we hope to welcome you and your family back again soon for another relaxing stay.

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
