  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway

Got Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the national park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive) or climb Eryri's mountains. If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few balls as you go, head to the golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite boasts a fantastic location moments from Bala Lake and town. Visitors consistently praise the immaculately clean, modern, and warm shower and toilet facilities. Staff are frequently described as friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Pitches are generally spacious and level, with good amenities. Some road noise and Wi-Fi connectivity issues have been noted, and a few guests felt the site was better suited for families than groups seeking lively evenings. Overall, the site is highly recommended, with many visitors eager to return.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review and for your kind comments about our location, facilities, pitches, shop and, of course, our friendly and helpful team. It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We completely understand your comments regarding play facilities. Unfortunately, due to the size and layout of the site, we simply don’t have the space to provide a dedicated play area. There is, however, a fantastic play area just a short walk from the site, which we are always happy to recommend to families staying with us.

We do have to say that we are a little disappointed to be marked down for the lack of a play area, as this is not a facility that we advertise as being available on site. We always try to be clear about the facilities we offer so that guests can make an informed choice when booking.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave such positive feedback. We’re really pleased that you enjoyed so many aspects of your stay, and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we are glad that you found our location convenient to the local amenities and that the grounds were well kept. We are very proud of our site. Even though we are in the perfect location, we are also surrounded by trees and mountains which makes it difficult at times to get a strong WIFI signal to satisfy everyone but it has now been re booted and hopefully when you return in the future it will be strong enough for your needs.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (medium)

Liked Great Location ,ten min walk to town with some great pubs and independent shops. The site is very clean with warm shower and toilet block . Pot washing facilities provided too.
Your pitch has gravel and grass with water ,el,and a light post which is very cosy .
Shop on site but didn't use it . Friendly staff . Had a pizza Friday night which was one of the best I've had.
Lots of cyclists .
Happy to go again . 👍🥳🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Disliked I head a generator / blow up mattress like noise every hour during the night . Couldn't determine where it was coming from but it woke me up. Thank god for ear plugs .

WiFi was sporadic, kept cutting out and I was near the main entrance/ office. Not reliable at all.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay and appreciated our location, clean facilities, pitches and, of course, the pizza! It’s also lovely to hear that you found the team friendly and that you’d be happy to visit us again. 🥳

We’re sorry, however, that your sleep was disturbed by the intermittent noise during the night. We completely understand how frustrating that must have been, particularly when you couldn’t identify where it was coming from. We’ll certainly keep an eye (and ear!) out for any unusual overnight noise.

We’re also sorry to hear about the unreliable WiFi. We appreciate how frustrating it is when the connection keeps dropping, especially close to the office. We have had the engineer out this week and so far it seems to be much better.

Thank you again for your kind comments and constructive feedback. We really hope to welcome you back again soon — hopefully with a quieter night’s sleep and a more reliable WiFi connection! 🏕️😊

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Well situated, modern, clean showers and washing up facilities, great shop with friendly pooch and flexible, we were set for one night and would have had to relocate but immediately upon enquiring they set us up for two, upgraded with electric point too!!! This place really is amazing folks, everyone quiet, respectful, no loud music!

Disliked Really picking here! but only gripes in that the pizza station wasn't there permanently ;) the light on our steps was intermittently working, couldn't have firepits due to the sensitive timing of recent forest fires and it was also situated on a fast road, so the occasional moron races past in their car or motorbike waking people. But this place really is amazing folks, everyone quiet, respectful, no loud music!

From the manager: Thank you so much for such a fantastic review! We’re absolutely delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your stay and that you found the site well situated, clean and modern. It’s also great to hear that we were able to accommodate your extra night at short notice — we’re always happy to help where we can!

We’re especially pleased that you appreciated the peaceful atmosphere on site. We work hard to create a friendly, relaxed environment where everyone can enjoy their stay, so it’s lovely to hear that this came across.

We had a smile at your comment about the pizza station! 😂 We wish we could keep it here permanently too, but hopefully you’ll catch it again on another visit.

Thank you also for mentioning the intermittent step light — we’ll make sure this is checked. The restriction on firepits was unfortunately necessary due to the heightened risk of forest fires at the time, and is completely out of our control, although we appreciate this may have been disappointing.

As for the occasional speeding vehicle, sadly being situated near to a road means we can’t control what happens outside the site, although we certainly understand how frustrating it can be when someone decides to put their foot down!

Thanks again for your wonderful feedback and for recommending us so highly. We’d love to welcome you back again — hopefully for longer next time!

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked Lovely location right by Lake Bala, with great facilities and a beautiful setting.

Unfortunately, the only thing that really spoilt our visit was the hard-standing pitch we were allocated (I think it was pitch 14). It was right by the road and one of the pitches furthest away from reception, but more importantly, there was a very unpleasant smell coming from the drain nearby, which was noticeable throughout our stay.

It’s a shame, as the site itself has a lot going for it and the location is fantastic. Hopefully, the drainage issue can be addressed, as we would otherwise have really enjoyed our stay.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We’re really pleased to hear that you enjoyed our beautiful location by Lake Bala and appreciated the facilities and setting.

We are very sorry, however, that the unpleasant smell from the drain affected your stay. We completely understand how disappointing this must have been, particularly as you otherwise enjoyed the site.
Please be assured that we are actively trying to rectify the issue and have been investigating the source of the smell. Unfortunately, at present, it appears that the cause may be coming from drainage infrastructure outside of our site boundaries, which makes resolving the problem more challenging and means that it is not entirely within our control. Nevertheless, we are pursuing the matter and doing what we can to identify the cause and find a solution.
We genuinely appreciate you bringing this to our attention, and we hope that we can get the issue resolved so that future guests can enjoy their stay without this concern. We would be delighted to welcome you back and give you the experience you should have had.

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
