General

  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails

Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall among the Snowdonia mountains is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries).

These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas.

Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is topping for hikers and cyclists with several local trails.

Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Visitors will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers. For snacks and drinks, a food wagon is open from 7am until 11pm serving all day breakfast, hot food, tea, coffee, ices and other refreshments.

Please note that there's no mobile signal or wifi here: guests are welcome to use the landline.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

During very occasional extreme weather conditions which include ice and snow, the owners are unable to guarantee operational showers in the amenities block, but will endeavour to offer an alternative in the main house.

Amazing views, quiet and tranquil setting. Great location for exploring surrounding lakes and valleys.

Stunning sunsets from the tent, and a breezy spot to rid us of flies during the heatwave.

    Disliked:

This is very much wild camping, many pitches are amongst trees and reeds. The large open fields pictured in previous years are not currently available. Definitely a site more suitable for smaller tents and adventurous campers.

Sam helpfully found us a flat pitch in a quiet spot which was a great location, but there were not many alternative options for our five bed tent.

Looking at old reviews its clear things are changing - the roads to/around are now all newly laid gravel - but adjust expectations accordingly.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments. However, looking at your pictures you had a secluded spot, no neighbours and breathtaking views. I believe most sites have a desgnated space and many neighbours.I'm confused about what else you could want.but apologise you were unhappy

Wild Camping, Friendly Staff, Walks From Door Step, Beautiful Views 14/07/2018

Everything - I wanted a wild camping experience with the basic comforts and this is exactly what I got.

I first visted this campsite in June 2017 and have returned again this year and will deffinitly be going back. I have visted with family (all adults) and have stayed as a solo female ( without a car). My two large dogs have joined us on every trip.

Below are the main reasons I love this place and why I plan on returning many more times.

The Owners - Amazing welcome everytime. The whole family is lovely, they make you feel at home and nothing is too much hassle. When staying as a solo female, I felt 100% safe knowing that this family would look out for me. I don't have a car so when I camp here, I have no way to get to the shops, this was no problem, the family would pick up anything I needed when they were due to go into town. The Owners are very sociable, but in no way over bearing. You will see as much or as little of them as you want, they will join you round the campfire or leave you too enjoy the wilderness in peace, whatever you want, that's what they'll give you.

Pitches - One of the biggest bonuses of this place is the pitch size. There is no pitch size! If you look at the photos I have attached you will see my camp, dispite the amount of space I have taken up, it still only cost me £10 per night! The property is HUGE and so is the variety of pitches. I always want a wild isolated pitch, but there are flat pitches available as well. Due to the size of the place, 'noisy neighbours' are not an issue.

Location - The location is beautiful, amazing views, untainted night skys and only the sound of nature. Plenty of sites and attractions if you have a car, but for me it was the walks from the door step that was the icing on the cake. This is sheep country, but their are plenty of places to walk the dogs where they can be off lead away from any sheep. Good common sense dog owners will love this place.

Campfires - This place let's you have campfire, oh yes! Sam 'The Man' , will even carry fire wood up to your pitch for you.

Overall I love the freedom of this place. From the moment you arrive and set up camp, you get to call a little piece of wild heaven your own.

Wonderful friendly site with great owners. Very relaxed and beautiful views. Cabin located in the woods down a fairly steep path with a camp fire area to the side of the cabin. Wood can be purchased at the site. Useful Kettle in the cabin and lights which was a bonus.

Some areas of the site could do with a bit of a sprucing up. Nothing major and ideal for a quiet weekend away from it all.

Loved the location and views and the night sky.

    Disliked:

Arrived at mid day and didn't see a single person, knocked on door, window and rang bell no answer. Was told by another camper who was just leaving to just pitch our tent and try to catch the owner later. Not knowing where to go or where we could pitch our tent we pitched on a small bit of flat land behind the house. We never did see the owner even though we walked past the house a few times to get water and to use the toilets (which were dirty wet and toilet paper all over the floor but none to use) We did get a welcome from the Alsatians every time we walked past the gate, a Ram that came to have a look at us and a small brown dog and a collie that kept coming to poop around the tent.

From the manager...

I will not even bother to answer this - look at outr other reviews - without exception we have bebn called welcoming, friendly and that we couldn't do enough for our guests.- I think toy are reciewing some other site

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river, and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve.

The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining.

You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
