General

  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails

Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall among the Snowdonia mountains is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries).

These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas.

Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is topping for hikers and cyclists with several local trails.

Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Visitors will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers.

Toilets blocks poorly cared for- no running water in men's and only small amount in women's, with a sign that indicated this was fairly normal!! Drinking Water tap needs looking after/ updating.

From the manager...

So sorry you didn't enjoy your stay and we have taken your constructive criticism on board. The lack of water in the sinks was due to the pump blowing up and a new one was on order. However I can confirm that we have an additional toilet block are under construction as well as a washing up block (including drinking water .

Sam was brilliant guiding us to a spot suitably close to facilities for the little one the food at the van was good and reasonably priced again with great staff and the site as close to wild camping as you can get on a site the stars at night amazing and fairly peaceful overall I enjoyed my stay and would return just be prepared to stop for a shop at Denbigh as that's the closest ten miles away but again expertly guided to.

    Disliked:

Not much I disliked washing and toilet facilities could do with making bigger and the drinking water better access and drainage

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind comments. We are currently building a washing up cabin, improving the drinking water access and more showers and toilets.

My partner and I stayed at Hafod Hall over the bank holiday weekend. We were specifically looking for wild or semi-wild camping with allowance for campfires, and in this respect Hafod was exactly what we were looking for. Although they do offer more regular-type camping in a field at the bottom of the property, we particularly loved their wild open top field, with loads of space to pitch anywhere and lots of privacy given by trees and patches of long grass. It really was sublime.

When we arrived we were greeted warmly by Sam who helped us park up and showed us around. He and the other staff there were all exceptionally friendly and helpful, and we really felt completely welcome there throughout our stay. Thanks guys!

We pitched near the top of the field under a wonderfully characterful tree, and had lovely views both down into the valley and up onto the hill behind. We did encounter some midges, but our campfire kept them at bay. Even though the campsite was extremely busy - being the August bank holiday - we were still remained remote and could barely see any other campers from our location. In fact the top field could easily have handled quite a few more campers while still offering good isolation.

The campsite is well located for easy day trips into Snowdonia national park. Snowdon itself is just over half an hour's drive away, and there are plenty of other local attractions within easy reach. There is also plenty of walking to do from the campsite itself, including down to a lake a bit further down the valley.

We absolutely loved our time at Hafod and would definitely come back again!

    Disliked:

We only have a few small pieces of constructive criticism to share, although none of these would stop us from recommending Hafod Hall or staying there again. Firstly, the water point was a little ramshackle and consisted of a tap attached sideways to a loose bit of plastic piping. This made it quite difficult to fill up large containers of water and resulted in a lot of wastage as the water just kind of went everywhere when the tap was turned on. It would be great if there was a sink with a properly attached tap for filling up.

The other point was that the dogs outside the house were barking late into the night which did somewhat spoil the lovely peace and quiet of the campsite. Again, not a major issue really, but one of the brilliant things about Hafod is it's beautiful remote countryside location, so noise is somewhat more noticeable as a result!

The view, sunset was pretty amazing over the hills (suggested to watch by one of the guys who worked here).
Basic, people have forgot what camping is about, for me its a chance to not watch TV, not have a phone going off constantly, no electric, remember this isn't a 5 star luxury Caribbean resort, its a hillside in North Wales.
Hot shower, that worked, not having to keep the button pressed or feed it 50p's, no queue.
    Friendly/helpful/polite staff

    Disliked:

Incorrect Lat/long, being rural wales a postcode can cover miles (I'm originally from Mid Wales so I recognise this first hand), the coordinates which can be pretty exact are a mere 5 miles out (I guess someone/pitchup has done a search from a postcode converter) a closer lat/long is 53.1010162, -3.5951066 (this takes you to the intersection of the drive/A road)
Last stretch of the driveway (by the house) not loads of potholes, but the ones there were big.
Gnats/midges, make sure you take a decent bug spray, I got eaten (my wife didn't get a single bite).
Not many flat spots to pitch, get there early.
Steep walk (shortcut) to the toilets, would benefit from wooden steps (more so if it rains)

When we arrived we were greeted with a warm welcome and were offered a range of different areas to set up in. We chose a quiet pitch in a field that had amazing views! The staff were so friendly and informative, they even helped us find phone signal (which is very hard to find). The stargazing is amazing at night and the area is close enough to drive out to different areas.

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river, and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve.

The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining.

You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
