General

  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails

Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall among the Snowdonia mountains is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries).

These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas.

Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is topping for hikers and cyclists with several local trails.

Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Visitors will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers. For snacks and drinks, a food wagon is open from 7am until 11pm serving all day breakfast, hot food, tea, coffee, ices and other refreshments.

Please note that there's no mobile signal or wifi here: guests are welcome to use the landline.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

During very occasional extreme weather conditions which include ice and snow, the owners are unable to guarantee operational showers in the amenities block, but will endeavour to offer an alternative in the main house.

This was easily the worst site (I use the term loosely) I have ever stayed on. (And ive been camping for decades)The last reviewer- who the owners have in their response tried to discredit - is being generous rather than being malicious. I cannot fathom how this site has had so many good reviews other than when the sun is shining and the sky is clear it is set in a beautiful place and this distracts the campers from its obvious flaws.
There are virtually no facilities. The toilet block was disgusting - it looked abandoned. Home made. No toilet paper is one thing but no running water to wash your hands?? My daughter went to the toilet and well... we had to use our bottled water and soap when she got back from the toilet block. Totally unacceptable.
The pods were like nothing ive ever seen. Again obviously home made and really poorly made. Ive stopped in lots of pods now all over Britain and this was easily the worst. If youve not stopped in one before you may think this is what they are supposed to be like but they arent!! Unsealed and with no effort to make them so that they can be warm. A couple of planks of wood where the ceiling should be so that warm air could get out and the cold in. They are meant to be sealed units. I could go on - they are just poorly designed and made.
Inside the pod was filthy. Not been cleaned in who knows how long. They provided thin matts not futons as advertised. These were filthy too. Kettle included but muddy. My kids had to be persuaded to lie down in their sleeping bags to go asleep once id covered the dirty futons with our blankets because there were so many dead insects on the floor and spiders living in there they wernt happy. Again we are outdoors people and have camped and stayed in pods lots of times but they are always cleaned before we get there and they are sealed units so the crawlies cant get in.
On top of that there was a maniac or maniacs on site who sang, shouted and banged something? until the wee hours so sleep was difficult.
This is a really poor site im afraid and I would not recommend it to anyone - even people i dont like! Yes I was annoyed at how bad it was- long way to go just to want to leave as soon as i got there!

From the manager...

Firstly you have the advantage as I don't know you're namw or when you stayefd as you didn't book through Pitchup.but think it was when my husband was taken critically ill

Secondly I stand by my comment about the previous review being malicious but for legal reasons I cannot put on here why that is the truth.

The pods aren't poorly desigmed or home made but everyone is entitled to an opoinion. I just wonder why you didn't complain at the time and we would have done everything possible to make you happy. We don't advertise Futons anymore - we offer camping rolls.

So sorry you didn't like us but think you booked the wrong venue 0- we are a wild camp site with so many positives

The cold unsealed Draughty bodged up pod and poor heating totally unsealed and un-insulated, we've stayed in warmer better built pods we left a day early due to waking up freezing in the night . We are seasoned podders and have camped in storm Doris and were warmer then !! No toilet rolls in toilet block and feaces stuck in dirty toilet in the men's no toilet roll in there either!!

From the manager...

We believe this review to be malicious possibly by a comptitor as new information has now come to light.

The Pods are brand new and if you scroll through our reviews will see that not one person has ever complained.. The following is an exctract froma review from people that stayed in rge same pod,

'Liked: Can't find a word that can describe this accommodation!, - amazing from the minute we got there. Clean, peaceful but help on hand if needed... we will be back very soon.'

The toilet issue must have been bad timing on their part as we had other guests with no complaints and the toilets are checked regularly We also supply Harpic and brushes in each toilet. We don't supply toilet paper mainly because it's get taken
We welcome constructive real critism so we can improve

What a fantastic place to stay. We initially booked as a tent but when we arrived we were told by the owners that they had upgraded us to one of there wooden yut for free because the wind had gotten up and we were with young children.. when does that ever happen? Thank you so much .. we've camped all over the country as a young family but we will definitely be coming here again the kids absolutely loved it . What a generous thing to do by upgrading us and we will repay you by recommending you to all of our friends who love the pictures I've shared with them. We will be seeing you again very soon.

Great spot, good for those who are a bit tired of the usual camping experience (overpriced and too polished!). Like others say, go if you want the wild camping experience - except you benefit from a toilet here and you don't need to walk 15 miles :)

    Disliked:

Maybe a little pricey for what you are paying for had it not been for the fact we had a discount of 30% we might be a bit miffed.

No running water in the bathrooms (come on, this should be a given).

From the manager...

Sorry about the sink we are still waiting for delivery of new pumps although the showers are good and with no extra charge like most sites

Just before I arrived to the campsite, I dropped my motorcycle on the nearby gravel road (my fault) and broke off the brake lever, leaving it unsafe to ride.

The site owners were AMAZING. They pulled my bike into their garage, gave me the number for their bike shop, let me stay two extra nights, let me use their phone to call family, gave me extra food AND they drove me to the bike shop when the part arrived. I felt really bad when I left with no money to give an extra tip for all the amazing help they gave me, but I hope to be back next year or so!

I spent the four days hammock camping in their woods and taking long walks around the reservoir. Definitely recommended, beautiful sights.

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river, and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve.

The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining.

You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
