General

  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails

Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall Camping Club, among the Snowdonia mountains, is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries).

These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas.

Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod Hall will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is splendid for hikers and cyclists, with several local trails to choose from.

Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Guests will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers, and are welcome to construct campfires to keep warm of an evening (but please note you'll need to use the firepits provided, and buy your wood on site).

Please note that there's no mobile signal or wifi here: guests are welcome to use the landline.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 50 metres between pitches.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

All onsite food and drink establishments are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

The washing-up area is not in operation due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Guests under the age of 8 are not allowed on site.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 10 or more people are not permitted.

Reception is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

The shower facilities are closed. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

During the winter months and adverse weather the owners cannot guarantee that the shower block will be available; however, toilets and a shower will be available for use in the main house.

Hafod hall have been restricted by the government to reduce pitching sites from 650acres to one small field for all guests which we found to be detrimental to our experience we desired and expected as we had to pitch at a specific location (no wind breaker and was bitter and unpleasant after dark) and were surrounded by a large volume of other guests closely situated to us and it felt like a small roudy festival

Not suitable if you have a large tent (6 man). We got told on arrival where to go for the tent pitches and the man showing us around (not sure of his name) led us to the entrance of the tent pitches and told us to walk up the hill to the woodlands. So we had to find a suitable pitch for our 6 man tent which was rather difficult and was out of the way from the toilets (5-10 min walk). This was a walk through mud and stones and as it had been raining was extremely dangerous and I fell over and cut my leg, which was not ideal as we had to cart all our belongings up and down a steep hill through mud and stones.

Very deceiving photos - the photos show a big field which seems to be non existent as we were only told on arrival about the woodlands.

Price - paying £48 for 2 nights for this campsite was extortionate. We only ended up staying 1 night as it was not as expected.

Car park - at first we parked at reception when we were unloading our belongings (this took about 1 hour 30 mins and we had to make 4 trips as our pitch was so far away, due to none being big enough for our 6 man tent). We then had to move our car to the car park on the other side of the camp at the bottom of a hill when we had finished unloading. This was another walk through mud and pot holes. Maybe this should be included on the description of the site?

Damaged car - as we were exiting the campsite to return home, the car got damaged due to the amount of pot holes in the road to the site! (I'm aware from previous reviews that this is an ongoing problem in Wales but there were a fairly large amount which as I stated, damaged our car.)

Rubbish left around - near our pitch there was belongings left from previous owners; a mug, cooking pan and a bottle (which looked like wee).

Previous reviews goes to show management don’t like the negative feedback and always respond with “you chose the wrong campsite”. Maybe if the photos shown the actual woodlands where we was told to go, we definitely would not have chose this site, mainly due to having to walk up and down the mud carrying all our belongings which was again not stated. As all other campsites including the previous “wild camping” experience we were allowed to park next to the pitch to unload then move the car away from the pitch. This should’ve been on the description.

We have previously experienced “wild camping” but this was nothing compared to last time on another site. Maybe if there was maintained paths to help campers walk up and down carrying their belongings would be beneficial. Also, having pictures of the “woodlands”, where we were told to go, instead of the big field on the pictures, would have made our decision to visit this campsite very different.

DONT visit this site if you have mobility issues as walking up and down steep paths through mud would not be safe.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments.

Sadly you arrived during horrific rain which always make things seem worse.
Much of what you say I take on board but some of your comments are untrue. The potholes are a Welsh problem but we were unable to get them fixed before the Bank Holiday due to Covid.
The short answer is you could have spoken to us and we'd have done whatever was needed to make you happy but you didn't and you seem to have made yourself feel better from venting. If you don't talk to the management how on earth are we supposed to make things right for you.

We are a bit like Marmite you either love us or in your case hate us

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use Hafod Hall as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve.

The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish-style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining.

You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
