  • Peaceful, spacious and family-run site on a North Wales working farm
  • Among hiking and cycling trails; wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping where campfires are welcome
If plenty of space and a laidback, welcoming atmosphere are top on your list of wild camping must-haves, surely you will like the sound of Hafod Hall Camping Club. This peaceful, family-run site is on a working farm in Bylchau in North Wales, surrounded by hills and so spacious that kids can run free. The basics are covered here – a toilet and hot shower – and so are all the things you might expect from a real working farm, like birdsong, bleating sheep and tractors in the distance. This is also a designated Dark Skies area, so make sure to put aside time for a cup of tea under the stars (when the conditions are just right). Guests are welcome to construct campfires to keep warm of an evening (but please note you'll need to use the firepits provided, and buy your wood on site). As a wild camping site, it's possible you may have to walk up to the top field – it's a little walk but you'll be rewarded with some excellent views. There's no mobile signal or wifi here, but guests are welcome to use the landline. Hafod Hall Camping Club is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. The surrounding area is splendid for hikers and cyclists, with several local trails to choose from. Kids are only allowed on site if over the age of 14 (and will be classed as adults for charging purposes).

Liked -Location is absolutely stunning
-The host was really friendly and welcoming
-Fire pit

Disliked -Distance to the toilets and parking (granted we were camped at the complete opposite end of the campsite so not a real issue if you camp closer to the services)

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Remote but enough access to facilities (shower, bathroom, potable water). Wide variety of spread out sites to choose from- under trees to scenic overlooks, there's a good mix of spaces available. The sites are spacious as well, and though we had neighbours we didn't hear much of them. (Except for a group of lads who we think were told to quiet down the night after a rowdy one- lucky for us!)

Liked The views.

Disliked Our pitch was over tree roots. Not sure it was even a pitch. We couldn’t put up our tent fully and the ground sloped significantly. You will need to be fairly fit to get to pitches. Car park was a long way away, so best take all you can. To top it all, a group kept everyone awake till 3am with their drum and bass music. There is nobody to contact in situations like this, so we complained in the morning. We booked for two nights but left after our first night. Won’t be returning.

From the manager: Firstly I will address the isuue of the group who were noisy. We have always hosted groups successfully but the group in question fell far below the behaviour we expect from our guests. We have now changed our rules for excepting groups and this sort of behaviour will nott be tolerated. However we had 2 members of staff in the Wild Camping area who you could have approached to complain but please accept my apologies for what you found disturbing.

I am afraid that your complaint about the tree root could easily have been rectified by moving the place a little where you set up and it is clear in ourr listing that you will be asked to put your car in the car park after unloading. I think the bottom line is you chose the wrong venue for your camping trip. Other than your review we have 98% 10/10 reviews so can only put it down to personal choice

Liked The scenery was amazing, it was a taste of wild camping with a shower and toilets. Nice staff. Close to some beautiful trails. A lot of wooded areas nearby that are like from fairytales. Also nice to be able to buy wood there for campfires. Honestly by far one of my favourite campsites due to the terrain.

Disliked Not a dislike but suggestion - they should consider selling some camping essentials on site as we ran out of gas on our stove and it’s quite a rural area so come prepared.

Also a tip if you’re going and want to avoid wind set up camp a bit lower on the campsite.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind words. I'm pleased to say we are currently converting a shepherd's hut into a campsite shop where you will be able to buy essentials as well fresh eggs from our hens and other foodstuffs

Liked The hosts are so very friendly and kind. They give you a full tour of the facilities upon arrival, and are happy to accommodate any needs you may have if they are able to.

For example, I arrived early on in the afternoon (about 4ish) and have kitted my car out to sleep in, and they let me park up in a spot nearer the house (with a BEAUTIFUL view to boot) and camp there as it was free when I arrived (I had provisions for tent camping, I just feel much safer travelling alone as a young woman knowing I’m in a lockable steel box than a piece of fabric).

The shower is very nice, warm, controllable temperature, clean. The toilets are also very clean.

They also happily gave me and a few other guests a historical background on the property as we were interested. Very interesting !

Also very close to Betws-Y-Coed, with gorgeous sites and activities.

All in all a fantastic experience, will absolutely be back if/when I’m back in the area 🙌🏼

Disliked I suppose one could say there is just a cold tap with some grass and moss below it for dish washing facilities. Workable, but if your creature comforts like a sink and hot water are of high importance to you, then perhaps this may not be the site for you. I would however recommend you don’t let it stop you from staying here and experiencing all that the venue, hosts, and area have to offer :)

Liked Friendly welcome on arrival, got shown around potential pitches and we picked the one that worked best for us from the ones available.
Liked the pitches being spread out and "wild". It is definitely a "wilder" area, with sloped hillside pitches for the most part - we were expecting this based on other reviews so were fine with it but it does seem to catch some people out. There were a few other groups but the wind in the trees and bird song drowned out any other noise and it felt a lot more secluded which was nice :)
Due to wet weather the paths were very boggy and the quad couldn't go up, not an issue for us and just meant a few trips to carry items, left car at reception for this (the car park is a bit further).
Toilets were clean with paper & antibac gel stocked through visit, water point also available

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use Hafod Hall as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve. The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish-style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining. You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
