General

  • In the grounds of a 14th-century Snowdonian manor house
  • Wildlife haven and stargazing area
  • Eco-friendly wild camping among hiking and cycling trails

Now this is a historic setting… Hafod Hall Camping Club, among the Snowdonia mountains, is so old and so famed that even Henry 8 once a-wandered around its land (the rotund one was one of several famed figures who's owned or leased this 14th-century building throughout the centuries).

These days the land of the property is made up of 650 acres of nature reserve including the Alwen Reservoir and Woodlands, and the grounds of the hall are home not to delinquent kings but to a collection of accommodation areas.

Like kings and celebs of yore, anyone staying at Hafod Hall will be in a remote and peaceful place, among spectacular views of the Welsh mountains and under the clear stars of a Snowdonia night (Hafod Hall is in a designated dark sky area). The surrounding area is top for hikers and cyclists with several local trails.

Hafod is an eco-friendly site, in a wildlife haven home to over 50 species of local birds. Visitors will have use of a shower block with four toilets and two showers.

Please note that there's no mobile signal or wifi here: guests are welcome to use the landline.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

During the winter months and adverse weather the owners cannot guarantee that the shower block will be available; however, toilets and a shower will be available for use in the main house.

The site was quite secluded and you are able to pitch wherever within the grounds, which was a nice wild camping like feel. It was also great been able to have an open fire. Sam, one of the owners, was welcoming when we first got there and showed us around.

    Disliked:

    No hot water for shower.

  • Liked:

Lovely area, fantastic views, pod very basic but adequate, friendly welcome

    Disliked:

Shower /toilet block out of order. No water tap. Pod door didn't shut from inside( had to tie with a shoe lace!) Owner did offer use of house toilet and shower but would have meant traipsing through their house. Approach road full of huge pot holes.

From the manager...

I'm sorry you found some problems and take note of your positive comments.

Firstly the shower block was not out of order it had been drained to avoid the sanitary ware and pumps being destroyed by the extreme night temperatures and this is clearly stated in the details. The water tap which is also outside had been switched off for the same reason but we offered all campers to fill up their bottles from the house

The pod door which we checked since your review was fine and if you had a problem all you had to do was ask and it would have been sorted immediately.

Pot holes are a North Wales epidemic and cannot be fixed in the winter due to the extreme rain, snow and ice which cause them in the first place

    Scruffy toilets block

From the manager...

Thanks for your positive review.and sorry you found the toilet block scruffy. Sadly you arrived during a torrential rain storm which makes it impossible to keep the floor spotless as there are constant muddy feet walking through the block. However, the sanitary ware was and is shining white and the showers are piping hot and free

Everyone was very welcoming, very helpful. The campers were all lovely. Area was very secluded but a wide area which was nice. Plenty of places to pitch from.

We chose the field by the cars and the grass was very over grown so very hard to pitch the tents but fun at the same time.

I cant fault this camping trip at all.

Local attractions

Hiking, biking, fishing, climbing, mountain biking, kayaking… and all in spectacular scenery: use Hafod Hall as a handy base for Snowdonia and north Wales, or stay close to base to investigate river, and countryside, wildlife and the night sky of the Snowdonia International Dark Sky Reserve.

The mining heritage of Denbighshire, Wrexham and north Wales can be explored at Talargoch, which has the only Cornish style engine house still standing in north Wales, and at the Minera Lead Mines, now a country park and heritage attraction. The Bersham Colliery Mining Museum at Wrexham tells the tale of the region’s coal mining.

You could also have a couple of days coastwards, to the likes of seaside towns Rhyl and Prestatyn, hike the Denbigh moors and sail or fish on Llyn Brenig reservoir, or tackle some of the famed fishing in the area, such as for salmon at the River Dee, and trout and more salmon at the River Elwy.
