  • Fly fishing available on the site's freshwater lake
  • 25 miles to Edinburgh
Dreaming of rolling hills and golden beaches, with the fringe benefits of close proximity to Edinburgh? Then feast your eyes on award-winning Thurston Manor, a former country estate near Dunbar in East Lothian. Thurston Manor is in a fabulous spot at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills and near the famous East Lothian coastline. However, the temptations are not just limited to the dramatic backdrop of the Lammermuir Hills. There’s the lure of fly fishing on the site’s attractive freshwater lake, or of relaxing in the heated pool, sauna and steam room, plus a well-equipped fitness centre and wonderful wildlife and walks in the surrounding woods. Thurston Manor has a shop, lounge bar and restaurant with free wi-fi and Sky and BT Sports and there is a great outdoor children’s play area. There is also entertainment during peak season.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Loved the friendly welcome and location of the site. Pitch was easily accessible. Shower facilities were excellent. Had meals a couple of evenings in the restaurant and they catered for gluten free which was great. Prices of the food in keeping with other pubs. We were able to take the dog into the restaurant therefore not having to worry about it being in the caravan alone. Pool and gym were available to use all day as long as a pool session was booked.

Disliked Realising this site is large and has many static van with needs we did find that moving said static vans was noisy and done before 8am. Also other work involving the JCB was carried out again before 8am and this meant we were disturbed and woken early on 2 occasions bearing in mind this was our holiday weekend. Also no WiFi coverage at our pitch. Gym is very tired and needs updating and some machines were out of order.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your detailed feedback. We're delighted you enjoyed the warm welcome, convenient pitch, excellent shower facilities, and gluten-free dining options. It's great to hear the dog-friendly restaurant and pool access added to your stay.

We're sorry about the early morning noise and gym condition—your comments are noted and will be shared with the team. We'll also look into the WiFi coverage at your pitch to improve connectivity.

Best wishes, Team Verdant

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Pitches are spacious and tidy

Disliked Toilet Elsan point were overflowing on arrival and we had to use hole in ground. Same next day when refilling the water tank and then cleaning out cassette for onward trip. We were there in March 2025 and there were no showers available due to fault, we had to go to leisure centre and use those. We were both freezing by time we got back. But no comments or communications either time.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your honest feedback. We're glad you appreciated the spacious and tidy pitches. We're very sorry to hear about the issues with the Elsan point and shower facilities, and especially the lack of communication during your stay. This isn't the experience we aim to provide, and your comments will be passed on to the team for review and improvement.

Liked The site was very quiet (mid-October). The toilet and shower blocks were very clean. My children enjoy using the play park. We didn't go to the entertainment building so I cannot comment on it.

Local attractions

You won’t find yourselves thirsting for action at Thurston Manor; there are lots of inspiring places to visit in East Lothian, Berwickshire and beyond. Peer at the puffins and gawk at the gannets at the Scottish Seabird Centre - you can zoom in on the nesting colonies on the islands (including Bass Rock, home to a gobsmacking 150,000 gannets) using the Centre’s interactive live cameras, or zoom off on a boat trip to see them in the flesh/feathers, along with grey seals and dolphins if you’re lucky. For more fresh air fun, there are clifftop walks, castle ruins, picnicking and pony trekking across the grassland, woods and salt marshes at John Muir Country Park in nearby Dunbar. Or you could go for a clamber around Tantallon Castle, a majestic fourteenth century stronghold in a photogenic location atop the cliffs overlooking the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock. Not to mention the magnificent golf courses, fishing, horse riding, yachting and water sports in the surrounding area. Whisky lovers will definitely want to make a pilgrimage to the nearby Glenkinchie Distillery, which has an excellent visitor centre and guided tours as well as tastings (and a discount in the shop is included in the very reasonable entrance fee). Last but not least, the brilliant and bonny city of Edinburgh is only 25 miles away.....
