  • Peaceful, dog-friendly Ayrshire smallholding site among woodlands
  • Dumfries House 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow one hour
  • Resident horses; next to a stream and two miles from the River Ayr Way
Privacy, peacefulness and ponies – sounds like a top holiday, right? And you can have all three Ps at Hillend Camping and Motorhome Aire, a pop-up site on a smallholding and livery stables in rural Ayrshire, about half an hour’s drive south of Kilmarnock. The pitches are spacious and unmarked here, so feel free to pick your own spot. Hillend is in a very private setting and encircled by peaceful woodlands, but it’s still within easy reach of local towns and villages. It is roughly a mile and a half to Auchinleck, where there is a railway station, convenience store, pub, butcher’s and café. The Dippol Burn stream, where kids and dogs can cool off, meanders through the site, and the gorgeous River Ayr Way walk is roughly two miles north of base. Badgers, hedgehogs, deer, foxes, owls and otters can sometimes be spotted in the local area, so keep your eyes peeled when exploring local woodlands and riverbanks. And as the site is part of a working farm, you may also see horses and ponies grazing in nearby fields, too, of course. This site is all about getting back to nature and relaxing in a secluded family-friendly space. Off-ground firepits and barbecues are permitted. Please note that there is no chemical waste point on site.

Liked: We loved the location. Beautiful and relaxing next to the river and the walk in the forest was fantastic. We even walked into the town and met some locals. The shower works perfectly and 2 toilets.
Nothing to complain about at all.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! We’re so pleased you enjoyed the peaceful streamside setting and had a chance to explore the forest walk and even visit the town, sounds like a perfect stay.
Glad to hear the shower and toilets worked well for you too. We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and hope to welcome you back again soon.

Liked: The beautiful peaceful surroundings
Clean facilities

Disliked: The cold water to wash up the dishes

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your review, we’re really glad you enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and found the facilities clean.
Just to let you know for next time, there is a hot water tap inside the shower room that you’re welcome to use for filling your washing up bowl with hot water. Most of our guests also find it handy to boil a kettle/pan of water at their pitch. Unfortunately, we’re unable to install an electric water heater outside in our washing up area due to health and safety regulations, but we hope the other options help keep things comfortable.
Hope to welcome you back soon.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Lovely site, well kept and clean. Location was great and price was fair.

Disliked: No dislikes, would have been nice to have an area that our dog could have been off lead but this wasn't a major problem.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review! We're so pleased you enjoyed the site, found everything clean and well-kept, and felt it was good value.
We completely understand your point about the dog area, dogs do need to be kept on a lead while onsite for the comfort and safety of all our guests, other dogs and nearby livestock. That said, the surrounding woodlands are perfect for off-lead exploring, so there’s still plenty of space for a good run around!
Thanks again for your feedback, and we’d love to welcome you (and your pup!) back anytime.

Non-electric hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked: Easy to find and quite secluded, lovely greeting from Lauren. Hardstanding pitches are perfect, a little levelling may be required depending on your motorhome. Proximity to Dumfries House is the main draw but is perfect for a stopover if passing.
Lovely to see the horses in the field.
