  • Peaceful, dog-friendly Ayrshire smallholding site among woodlands
  • Dumfries House 10 minutes’ drive; Glasgow one hour
  • Resident horses; next to a stream and two miles from the River Ayr Way
Privacy, peacefulness and ponies – sounds like a top holiday, right? And you can have all three Ps at Hillend Camping and Motorhome Aire, a pop-up site on a smallholding and livery stables in rural Ayrshire, about half an hour’s drive south of Kilmarnock. The pitches are spacious and unmarked here, so feel free to pick your own spot. Hillend is in a very private setting and encircled by peaceful woodlands, but it’s still within easy reach of local towns and villages. It is roughly a mile and a half to Auchinleck, where there is a railway station, convenience store, pub, butcher’s and café. The Dippol Burn stream, where kids and dogs can cool off, meanders through the site, and the gorgeous River Ayr Way walk is roughly two miles north of base. Badgers, hedgehogs, deer, foxes, owls and otters can sometimes be spotted in the local area, so keep your eyes peeled when exploring local woodlands and riverbanks. And as the site is part of a working farm, you may also see horses and ponies grazing in nearby fields, too, of course. This site is all about getting back to nature and relaxing in a secluded family-friendly space. Off-ground firepits and barbecues are permitted. Please note that there is no chemical waste point on site.

Primitive cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Remote location. Great views

Disliked Limited shower facilities. No electric. Water frozen in morning

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed our quiet, remote location and the views.
However, we do clearly advertise the site as a small non-electric Aire, so we’re a little unsure why electric was expected during your stay.
With regards to the water freezing, during winter months when temperatures drop below freezing, pipes can unfortunately freeze overnight. This is something that can happen on many rural sites and is unfortunately outside of our control.
Thank you again for visiting.
Best regards
Lauren & Aaron

Primitive cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Handy for one night on our way to Ferry Terminal in Troon. Also close to a big Tesco to stock up. Peaceful site surrounded by fields and near woodland.
Only one shower but it's a small site and there was only one other camper there when we stayed so this wasn't an issue. Clean facilities and the shower was lovely and hot.

Primitive cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked Very peaceful and spacious site in a lovely rural location. Dog friendly. Loved watching the horses
Helpful and friendly owners
Good to borrow a fire pit and be able to buy logs etc

Disliked Tricky dog walk not for the less agile, access via wobbly stepping stones, no path to follow, but dogs enjoyed a run round off the lead

Local attractions

An 18th-century estate, Dumfries House (10 minutes’ drive) has elegant rooms filled with Chippendale furniture and decorative objects such as gilded mirrors and colourful ceramics. After admiring the splendid interiors, head to the vast grounds, with their woodland walks, a delicate Chinese-style bridge and a maze. Ayr (30 minutes) sits on the Firth of Clyde and has a sandy beach skirted by a cycle path. Walk the length of the harbour arm all the way to the lighthouse, then take a trip on the Waverley paddle steamer, or head into town to check out the Gothic architecture of the Wallace Tower, with a viewing platform at the top. Treasures at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow (one hour) include Salvador Dalí’s “Christ of St John of the Cross” and assorted works by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Glasgow Botanic Gardens is a top spot for a walk among colourful blooms, rare trees and elegant Victorian glasshouses.
