  • Quiet, dog-friendly site on Scotland’s Castle Trail
  • Half an hour’s drive from Aberdeen and Craigievar Castle
  • Barbecues permitted on site and a shop five minutes’ drive away
Seeking a break in Scotland where you’ll be well-based for exploring castles, malt whisky distilleries and Aberdeen’s Old Town, harbour and mile-long sandy stretch? Hillhead Caravan Park has it down: a well-maintained, quiet site that’s just 15 miles from Aberdeen, around 55 minutes’ drive from the Malt Whisky Trail and right on the route of Scotland’s Castle Trail too. Where exactly is this Aberdeenshire site? Hillhead Caravan Park is in the Gordon District and bang in the middle of Scotland’s so-called ‘castle country’. It's just one mile west of the A96, the road that goes between Aberdeen and Inverness. That means that it’ll take you half an hour to get to Aberdeen by car whenever you fancy poking around the city’s museums, galleries, seafront and harbour. If you haven’t already filled up on goulash or other varied eats in Aberdeen, the site will permit you to start your own barbecue. The closest shop is just five minutes’ drive away when you’re looking to source all your important ingredients and anything you need for a picnic… There are many trails where you might want to take your picnic with you, beginning with the Castle Trail stopping at Craigievar Castle (half an hour's drive) or the working and historic distilleries around the Malt Whisky Trail (around 55 minutes’ drive). The latter heads into the Grampian Highlands, a mountain range with spectacular options for hikes, climbs, skiing and the sorts. Back on site, the facilities include a modern toilet and shower block.

What customers say

This campsite offers a peaceful rural location with spacious, level pitches and good views. It's praised for its friendly staff and is well-situated for exploring Aberdeen and local attractions. However, a recurring negative theme is the dated and often unclean state of the toilet and shower facilities, which many feel requires significant upgrading. Limited electricity amperage is also mentioned.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Camping field was in good condition and was able choose our own pitch.

Disliked Toilet Facilities were diabolical, stayed for two days and the toilet block looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a week. During our stay it was not cleaned at all and there was no toilet roll. General waste bins were filled to the brim. The barrier was never put down through the night, so there was no security.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Small, quiet site, play park, clean, easy to Access wash and toileting facilities. Polite staff and friendly faces. Room to pitch our tent with electric next to our family members without electric. Felt the site was safe and left out tent and belongings all day with no issues.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The site itself is nice - a mixture of gravel and grass, has spaces between pitches a great view out to the hills in the distance. The 6amp electricity is more than enough to run a camp fridge and charge phones etc. There is a small book/dvd library for visitors to use and a great play park for kids.

It’s a good base to stay for visiting Aberdeen as Kintore train station is only a couple of miles always from site and there is ample parking at the station.

I did enjoy my stay, but the facilities…

Disliked There was no one on reception when I arrived, but a gent was hanging about and when I asked about checking he directed me to a pinboard with my name on it (as if it were obvious) I’ve never seen anything like it in all my years of camping.

Sadly I need to say the same as others , the toilet block is pretty awful. I went possibly expecting such from reading other reviews but hoped that some work had been done for the season. There’s possibly been a lick of paint here and there, thats it (in fact they were painting the doors when I was there). A lick of paint is not enough. It needs a complete rip out and refurb. It is like a proper 1980s seafront public toilet - brown and mushroom coloured and really dirty grouted tiles - wear shoes in shower! Cleaning clearly doesn’t happen every day either. It makes me sad that such a great location and site is totally let down by facilities.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked What we liked about the site was that is was a nice quiet location with good pitches. The facilities were nice and close and clean. There was sunshine until around 9pm (June) and we were able to sit out until the sun went down. We were able to sit outside and have our own bbq which we put a few small logs on after for a small fire pit.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location in Aberdeenshire with easy access to National Trust properties. Close to some small towns with options for dinner and shops. Campsite itself had good facilities (bathrooms, washing up area etc) and wasn't too busy/noisy.

Disliked The layout of the camping area was a little odd, we were told to pitch our tent in the middle section but then our car was parked across the road, not far away but also not very close. Other campers were pitched up right next to their cars which made it easy for them to access cooking equipment etc and use the car for a bit of privacy on one side.

Local attractions

Those of you who rate cycling, walking and mountain biking highly might want to head to the landscapes around Aboyne (40 minutes’ drive). In the same direction, visit Balmoral Castle (an hour), the Queen’s Scottish residence. A trip to these two parts will take you through both Donside and Deeside. Keeping with the historical theme, Haddo House (35 minutes) frequently hosts theatrical productions from Prince Edward. However, if it’s castles you’re intent on finding first, perhaps a stroll around Castle Fraser (10 minutes), Drum Castle (25 minutes) or Corse Castle (half an hour)? In Aberdeen, there’s excitement in a few different forms. Historical places include The Gordon Highlanders Museum (25 minutes), the Girdle Ness Lighthouse (40 minutes) and Blairs Museum (25 minutes), while entertainment comes in the form of the Jump In Adventure Parks: Aberdeen (35 minutes) and the seafront amusements.
