Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm: Visitor image of the sunrise

General

  • Wiltshire farm site with views over Salisbury Cathedral
  • Just off the A354, three miles from central Salisbury
  • A mile from the closest pub; direct footpath access

Set on a large grassy meadow, this friendly site in Wiltshire is conveniently located for Salisbury, Stonehenge, the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast. The impressive 123-metre spire of Salisbury Cathedral is visible from this quiet spot, as are acres of rolling green countryside and flocks of peaceful farm animals.

Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is a place for back to basics camping: its simple facilities include chemical disposal, toilets, wash basins and a shower (both of these are cold water only). Essentials sorted, it's time to relax: and that's perhaps best done in the large repurposed field shelter, where you can take a seat and gaze out over the stunning views (drink in hand optional, but recommended…).

The site is conveniently set a few hundred yards back from the A354 road, making it a breeze to get into Salisbury city centre and make use of its public pool, railway station, arts centre, cafés and shops. Coombe Bissett, a mile in the other direction, also has a popular local pub.

With plenty of space and Bake Farm's sheep for company, this outdoorsy spot is also a hotspot for walkers. Guests here have direct access to a good range of rights of way. Popular strolls in the area include the 25-mile-long Clarendon Way that runs from Salisbury to Winchester, hiking up Harnham Hill and ambling around Salisbury's water meadows.

Please note that Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is only suitable for guests aged five and over.

Please note

Great peaceful location with nice views Was able to walk along lanes into Salisbury in the morning for lunch and leave our van on site. Will definitely come back again if in the area.

View of Salisbury Cathedral. Proximity to Salisbury. Good toilets. Field shelter with picnic table. Large field where I had a wide choice of pitches.

    Disliked:

I could hear the nearby busy road even though there was a field between the site and it. The shower was cold.

We liked the place and the walking routes through the fields (there were two walks we could do with google maps, one to Salisbury and one to the pub) But we also walked to the racecourse. There was an old car show on Sunday. These walks were very nice.

    Disliked:

There were only three toiletcabins. In two small cabins was a loo, washbasin and mirror, in the third was a loo, washbasin and shower. And there was a place to wash up.There was only cold water. And two places where you could charge your device.

We were there in the bankholiday weekend and people came in at all times and it felt unpleaaent. For the rest of the time it was okay. But when you compare the price with what you got it was very very expensive.

The worst thing was that you should take care of your litter. When you are in a different country it is awful to take your litter to the shops. We even couldn't find bottle banks in Salisbury. In the past there were lots of them but now they have all gone. I think a campsite should profide litter bins.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and so glad you enjoyed walking in the local area.

Inevitably during bank holiday weekends, campsites tend to get busier. Ours is a massive field and we do restrict numbers but always encourage those looking for solitude to book out of main holiday season where possible.

We have made the decision not to take rubbish for two reasons really; firstly it would necessitate using a waste management company which would add considerably to costs and ultimately to the guests, bins become very full attracting smells and flies. But more importantly, we strongly believe that by not taking rubbish, it has had a very beneficial impact on the amount of waste guests generate.

Local attractions

After exploring the historic buildings of Salisbury, head even further back in time at Stonehenge (20 minutes' drive), an iconic English Heritage-managed landmark a few miles north of the town. More ancient history is within your reach if you drive to Avebury (55 minutes), home to a spectacular stone circle and other Neolithic sites in the scenic countryside of north Wiltshire.

To the south, there's the New Forest National Park (20 minutes), where cycling, walking, country pubs and semi-wild ponies, donkeys and pigs make for great family-friendly days out. Even more wild animals are on display at Longleat Safari Park (40 minutes), while for high-adrenaline tree-top adventures and forest segway escapades there's Go Ape in Moors Valley Country Park (30 minutes).

If being so close to Salisbury has you in the mood for more urban days out, you might like to take the train (or drive) to Bath (roughly an hour), while for some sun and sand you could head south to the beaches, piers and classic seaside amusements on offer in Bournemouth (40 minutes).
