Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm: Out on a walk

General

  • Farm site with views over Salisbury Cathedral
  • Just off the A354, three miles from central Salisbury
  • A mile from the closest pub; direct footpath access

Set on a large grassy meadow, this friendly site in Wiltshire is conveniently located for Salisbury, Stonehenge, the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast. The impressive 123-metre spire of Salisbury Cathedral is visible from this quiet spot, as are acres of rolling green countryside and flocks of peaceful farm animals.

Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is a place for back to basics camping: its facilities include chemical disposal, toilets, wash basins and a shower (both of these are cold water only). Essentials sorted, it's time to relax: and that's perhaps best done in the large repurposed field shelter, where you can take a seat and gaze out over the stunning views (drink in hand optional, but recommended…).

The site is conveniently set a few hundred yards back from the A354 road, making it a breeze to get into Salisbury city centre and make use of its public pool, railway station, arts centre, cafés and shops. Coombe Bissett, a mile in the other direction, also has a popular local pub.

With plenty of space and Bake Farm's sheep for company, this outdoorsy spot is also a hotspot for walkers. Guests here have direct access to a good range of rights of way. Popular strolls in the area include the 25-mile-long Clarendon Way that runs from Salisbury to Winchester, hiking up Harnham Hill and ambling around Salisbury's water meadows.

Please note that Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is only suitable for guests aged five and over.

Please note

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Guests under the age of 5 are not allowed on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 10 consecutive nights.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Fantastic views over fields to the spire of Salisbury Cathedral, extremely quiet dark & beautiful!
Lovely farm owner. All basic needs provided for. Water tap, toilets, toilet roll, shower. Clean & easy to use. Were able to park where we liked & park with the sun coming into the sliding door side! Nice walks nearby. Sheep in next field.

    Disliked:

No hot water in sinks or washing up point, steps up to loos which were hard for my lifeblood mobility partner. Field sloped so had to be aware when parking.

More suggestions than dislike - hand soap in toilets also a notice near the taps for wash up and drinking water as we witnessed a camper rinsing their camping toilet using the drinking hose.

The site was lovely and spacious, and very quiet. Tori and her husband were lovely, and made us feel very welcome. As did the dogs!! One of which ‘helped’ me to pitch my tent. The toilets were clean and tidy and there was a designated drinking water and wash up station. I can’t say as I disliked anything! I think a hot water shower would be a good idea for the cooler months, but I braved the cold water and it was refreshing! All in all, a lovely site, a perfect base for exploring Salisbury and the nearby Jurassic Coast, and I will definitely be going back.

Large field with a commitment not to overcrowd so plenty of space.
Closeness to Salisbury - easy and scenic 40 minute walk
    Clean toilets
    Friendly staff

    Disliked:

Cold shower - they plan to put a heated shower in next year
Toilet light - lights go out at a set time. Don’t mind needing a torch but would be good if there was a fluorescent marker on the outside so your torch can pick it up and you know you are heading in the right direction. Also lights on sensors inside the toilet. I do not like putting my torch on the floor or sink and I am not good peeing in the dark or one-handed. I do appreciate you do not want lights in all night but sensors would only come on if some one needs them. Only a suggestion. Would still return for another visit.

Local attractions

After exploring the historic buildings of Salisbury, head even further back in time at Stonehenge (20 minutes' drive), an iconic English Heritage-managed landmark a few miles north of the town. More ancient history is within your reach if you drive to Avebury (55 minutes), home to a spectacular stone circle and other Neolithic sites in the scenic countryside of north Wiltshire.

To the south, there's the New Forest National Park (20 minutes), where cycling, walking, country pubs and semi-wild ponies, donkeys and pigs make for great family-friendly days out. Even more wild animals are on display at Longleat Safari Park (40 minutes), while for high-adrenaline tree-top adventures and forest segway escapades there's Go Ape in Moors Valley Country Park (30 minutes).

If being so close to Salisbury has you in the mood for more urban days out, you might like to take the train (or drive) to Bath (roughly an hour), while for some sun and sand you could head south to the beaches, piers and classic seaside amusements on offer in Bournemouth (40 minutes).
