Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm: Out on a walk

General

  • Farm site with views over Salisbury Cathedral
  • Just off the A354, three miles from central Salisbury
  • A mile from the closest pub; direct footpath access

Set on a large grassy meadow, this friendly site in Wiltshire is conveniently located for Salisbury, Stonehenge, the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast. The impressive 123-metre spire of Salisbury Cathedral is visible from this quiet spot, as are acres of rolling green countryside and flocks of peaceful farm animals.

Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is a place for back to basics camping: its facilities include chemical disposal, toilets, wash basins and a shower (both of these are cold water only). Essentials sorted, it's time to relax: and that's perhaps best done in the large repurposed field shelter, where you can take a seat and gaze out over the stunning views (drink in hand optional, but recommended…).

The site is conveniently set a few hundred yards back from the A354 road, making it a breeze to get into Salisbury city centre and make use of its public pool, railway station, arts centre, cafés and shops. Coombe Bissett, a mile in the other direction, also has a popular local pub.

With plenty of space and Bake Farm's sheep for company, this outdoorsy spot is also a hotspot for walkers. Guests here have direct access to a good range of rights of way. Popular strolls in the area include the 25-mile-long Clarendon Way that runs from Salisbury to Winchester, hiking up Harnham Hill and ambling around Salisbury's water meadows.

Please note that Salisbury Campsite at Bake Farm is only suitable for guests aged five and over.

Please note

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

Guests under the age of 5 are not allowed on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

Beautiful location and an excellent camping field, relatively flat and well drained.
We had no difficulty finding the campsite and the manager Tori came over to welcome us and give some useful advice on footpaths that can take you into Salisbury.
We stayed 13&14th May 2022. The weather on the Saturday was glorious although it rained all night!
The toilet block is modest but clean and tidy, there is a shower but cold only so we opted for a stand up wash.
We thought it was an extremely peaceful campsite six or seven other couples staying mix of tents and VW camper vans.
I thought the policy of taking home your own rubbish quite reasonable as bis waste bins only attract insects when it’s hot.
Lovely countryside around, the farm as retains its hedges so these were full of song birds and there are lots of wild flowers.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, would prefer a hot shower, I would just install an electric one as well and give people the choice of what suits them best.

Lovely site! We chose a little spot right next to the sheep, pitches were level and easy to drive on. Was so peaceful and not to crowded at all! Staff were friendly when coming round to check us in. Included clean toilet blocks, washing up area and wifi, which meant my partner was able to work as he works on the go. Great location to go into Salisbury, can see the Cathedral from the site! Very happy and would book again.

    Disliked:

We only stayed one night so wasn’t an issue but just keep in that in mind when booking that the showers are cold.

What a fantastic location, with a friendly owner and some really thoughtful additions like a QR code to a map of a walk into Salisbury.

I was camped here for a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it :) It's got some amazing views and it's just really well positioned for Salisbury.

Overall a great stay and I'll be coming again :)

    Disliked:

Nowhere to put the rubbish! I know it's a hassle to manage but campervans and motorhomes generally have pretty small bins. So after a day or two you're living with a black bin bag in the van. Going site to site or on longer trips, means you are now driving wherever with a bin bag of rubbish.

The shower is cold water only, a solar hot water tank would be a cheap and easy addition to the roof above the shower and would mean there is at least a warm shower available :)

There wasn't a sign indicating it was a campsite from the road, just the sign for the fruit farm. As some sites have different entrances for camping and the farm you're naturally looking out for the camping sign. I ended up having to turn round and come back then driving down the lane to the farm and if it wasn't for someone already parked I wouldn't have known to turn into the campsite field when I got there.

All in all, minor issues and I would still be very happy to return as is.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and for your comments. Rubbish is an interesting one. We made this decision for two reasons really; firstly in order to take rubbish we would need to use a waste contractor such as Biffa which would mean having large bins in the field potentially leading to smelly over-flowing bins at the end of a long weekend which is just not in keeping with what we are trying to do here at Bake Farm. But our most important reason for not taking rubbish is that it has proven to make a huge difference to the amount of waste people generate and this is important to us in terms of the environment. But we do accept our decision is always going to promote discussion. We have looked extensively at solar power for the showers as we have a lot of solar in other areas of the farm so are familiar with it. Unfortunately it just wouldn't work for various technical reasons so instead we are embracing the huge health benefits currently being promoted on social media of a daily cold shower! I am sorry you found it difficult to find us. I do always send an email out to guests about a week before arrival with specific instructions. But thank you again for your kind words and for you comments; it is always very helpful to hear what we are doing well and what we could do better.

Local attractions

After exploring the historic buildings of Salisbury, head even further back in time at Stonehenge (20 minutes' drive), an iconic English Heritage-managed landmark a few miles north of the town. More ancient history is within your reach if you drive to Avebury (55 minutes), home to a spectacular stone circle and other Neolithic sites in the scenic countryside of north Wiltshire.

To the south, there's the New Forest National Park (20 minutes), where cycling, walking, country pubs and semi-wild ponies, donkeys and pigs make for great family-friendly days out. Even more wild animals are on display at Longleat Safari Park (40 minutes), while for high-adrenaline tree-top adventures and forest segway escapades there's Go Ape in Moors Valley Country Park (30 minutes).

If being so close to Salisbury has you in the mood for more urban days out, you might like to take the train (or drive) to Bath (roughly an hour), while for some sun and sand you could head south to the beaches, piers and classic seaside amusements on offer in Bournemouth (40 minutes).
