General

  • Small farm site in the New Forest National Park
  • A 25-minute drive from Southampton and 40 minutes from Stonehenge
  • Within walking distance of a pub, Italian restaurant and forest trails

Heading to the New Forest with canoeing, cycling or swinging from treetops on your mind? You’ll soon be spreading your wings from Carron Caravan and Camping Site, a small, quiet farm site in the New Forest National Park, well-situated for scouting out Stonehenge too, 40 minutes’ drive away (that’s one to tick off the bucket list).

As for your packing list, walking boots or sturdy shoes will likely come in handy here, as the surrounding area is jammed full of forest trails and many that can be accessed directly from the site on foot or by bicycle.

For a lighter stretch of your legs (perhaps first thing in the morning), perhaps you’ll want to wander past the site's open fields used for horse grazing and then amble on down to the village green where New Forest ponies often graze (it’s only five minutes’ journey there).

Handily, the local village is also home to a traditional family-run pub that serves tasty food and local beers. And when you want to mix things up a little, there’s an Italian restaurant next door for some alternative cuisine with a fine-dining vibe.

Looking for a watering hole with a bigger city vibe instead? The local bus stop (two minutes’ walk away) has direct links to Salisbury (25 minutes’ drive) and Southampton (half an hour).

On site, there are plenty of convenient facilities including an amenities block, so you won’t have to go far to take care of the essentials.

I will never use Pitchup again to book a campsite. I booked through them and the campsite subsequently closed. We were texted on the day we were due to start our holiday to tell us, and we had already reached the New Forest. Since then, I have had no refund of my deposit that I paid to Pitchup and no one has been in touch apart from an automated email in response to mine. Since then I have had two emails asking if we enjoyed our stay. Totally unprofessional.

Campsite messaged us just after 12 on day of arrival to say they "had been closed due to legal reasons" we were about 30 minutes away! This sent us into total panic as we needed to find somewhere to stay for the 3 days we'd booked! Not easy when most are closed due to winter season, including the one Paul recommended!
Very stressful experience which was not a great start to our holiday!

    Disliked:

Lack of notification site had been closed!! Message was via text, although once I got signal there was a voicemail but again around arrival time!
When I text Paul for the number of the alternative site he recommended (which was not open) we just got a smily face!! Totally not appropriate considering the circumstances :(

    Owner's initial communication.

    Disliked:

Site untidy and rough, not as shown in picture. Pitch was not available on arrival. Had to pitch elsewhere but then informed that the hook up we tried was broken. Waited half an hour for the occupant of our pitch to move on. Only shower on site was broken and owner did not know when it would be fixed. Did not inform us before arrival of this fact which would have been courteous. It meant we spent nearly an hour trying to find an open site nearby and ended up travelling 45 minutes to another site which was far superior and cheaper. Very, very disappointed and let down by both owner and Pitch-up as I have still not received a refund of our deposit one month later despite the owner assuring us that he would process this quickly.

Peaceful and scenic location, very small site, had everything you needed and clean. Not flashy in anyway. Friendly owner. Fantastic pub, the Lamb, at top of the road. Great base for cycling.

    Disliked:

Booked a hardstanding pitch, but on arrival there wasn't one available. This wasn't too bad as ground was frozen.

    Nothing!!

    Disliked:

We had a confirmed booking for a gravel/grass pitch what we were given was a soft grass pitch that ourselves and the people who arrived right behind us sank into, the contact person said there was gravel under the grass, if it was it was more then 6 inches down!
At 5.30pm the electricity went off the contact person said next day it was outside of the contactable hours despite arrivals being upto 6pm, having not contact with site representative at all at 7.30pm on the arrival day we left despite having paid for 2 nights it was obvious that the sites infrastructure was incapable of supporting the amount of units on the site as the electric points had individual 10 amp trips non had tripped just the main site trip.
Phoned next day and spoke to the site representative told him why we left he said electricity was reconnected at 10.30 pm 5 hrs after failure and he said he would refund us it never arrived.
One other thing there are deep tyre grooves at the top end of the site and these could cause problems particularly for caravans as the jockey wheels may catch the ground between the tyre grooves and cause the caravan to detach and roll off down the site it appears from another review that this might of happened once before.

Local attractions

While they may be dreamy, it’s not all about the walks and New Forest ponies around here. There are paintballing centres within five minutes’ drive and for a buzzier feel, Southampton’s galleries, museums and city centre entertainment (25 minutes' drive) or Salisbury (25 minutes) and its cathedral. While you’re on the places with a buzz, one such spot is the family-friendly Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (15 minutes).

All about the blood-pumping activities while you’re on your hols? Moors Valley Country Park & Forest (25 minutes) might be one for you, as there’s a steam railway, Go Ape course, golf course and country trails, or perhaps Lepe Country Park (40 minutes) for walking, swimming and birdwatching. In Lymington (35 minutes), the water takes the show, with sailing, fishing and swims in sea water baths some of the activities to be had.

Now, to look to the past, you’ll be delving into the history of the motor at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (half an hour). Meanwhile, Hurst Castle (45 minutes), a fortress by the sea, was once home to Henry VIII and now has ferry rides and Victorian wing batteries.
