Carron Camping and Caravanning: Gravel track leading to the pitches

General

  • Small farm site in the New Forest National Park
  • A 25-minute drive from Southampton and 40 minutes from Stonehenge
  • Within walking distance of a pub, Italian restaurant and forest trails

Heading to the New Forest with canoeing, cycling or swinging from treetops on your mind? You’ll soon be spreading your wings from Carron Caravan and Camping Site, a small, quiet adults-only farm site in the New Forest National Park, well-situated for scouting out Stonehenge too, 40 minutes’ drive away (that’s one to tick off the bucket list).

As for your packing list, walking boots or sturdy shoes will likely come in handy here, as the surrounding area is jammed full of forest trails and many that can be accessed directly from the site on foot or by bicycle.

For a lighter stretch of your legs (perhaps first thing in the morning), perhaps you’ll want to wander past the site's open fields used for horse grazing and then amble on down to the village green where New Forest ponies often graze (it’s only five minutes’ journey there).

Handily, the local village is also home to a traditional family-run pub that serves tasty food and local beers. And when you want to mix things up a little, there’s an Italian restaurant next door for some alternative cuisine with a fine-dining vibe.

Looking for a watering hole with a bigger city vibe instead? The local bus stop (two minutes’ walk away) has direct links to Salisbury (25 minutes’ drive) and Southampton (half an hour).

On site, there are plenty of convenient facilities including an amenities block, so you won’t have to go far to take care of the essentials.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 17 or over.

Small friendly site with clean showers and toilets.01/13/2022

The owner Paul bent over backwards to help us in the cold, dark and rain when the motor home got stuck firm in the mud for 2 hours. He remained calm with a sense of humour despite his ruined plans. The showers and toilets were clean. Other than getting stuck we had a trouble free stay, and couldn't have been closer to forest and local pub.

    Disliked:

No room to turn around without having to go on grass A turning point or gravel would have made ut easier to situate the motor home.

Well priced site for the new forest. Good new and clean toilets. Well sized level hard standing that was very well draining dispite the heavy rain. Well positioned electrical hook up with helpful owner. Very quiet site to stay on.

    Disliked:

Easy to drive past entrance sign (only on one side of the entrance) Also have to drive past a number of stored caravans at the top of the site that could be tidyed up.

The area was amazing to have a walk round, would definitely go back to explore there again.
Facilities there, bathroom but no shower as being renovated currently. Water top up and electric.

    Disliked:

Arrived mid morning to secure our pitch, the guy was lovely enough, we said we wanted to go out for a bit that day, so he told us to put a cone on our spot, which we did. Came back in the evening to find our pitch had been taken. Rang the lady in charge and she said an aggressive guy turned up and she told him not to take our spot but obviously he did. The guy in charge turned up and said he had tried to find him to get him to move but couldn't. We had to go between two pitches on grass which was un even and put us at a slight slant. Obviously having arrived early to secure our pitch was wasted as we did not get the flat pitch we were meant to get so was slightly annoying as if it wasn't for a gap between motorhomes we would not of had anywhere to pitch.

From the manager...

Yes this was most unfortunate and can not apologies enough to Hannah and family for the inconvenience , unfortunately this is a common fault with motor home pitches if you leave the site and return back late in the day.
Hannah & Family obviously like the area and would be welcome back with one free nights stay at Carron Camping.

Arrived and was told no shower bathroom facilities. There was a toilet but nothing else. Fortunately we were self sufficient but would of been nice to have been told.

From the manager...

Unfortunately the shower room was being refurbished at this time can only apologize, but it is not unusual for no shower facilities as many of the new forest owed sites do not even have shower facilities.
Not sure what the problem was as they had self sufficient facilities of their own

Local attractions

While they may be dreamy, it’s not all about the walks and New Forest ponies around here. There are paintballing centres within five minutes’ drive and for a buzzier feel, Southampton’s galleries, museums and city centre entertainment (25 minutes' drive) or Salisbury (25 minutes) and its cathedral. While you’re on the places with a buzz, one such spot is the family-friendly Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (15 minutes).

All about the blood-pumping activities while you’re on your hols? Moors Valley Country Park & Forest (25 minutes) might be one for you, as there’s a steam railway, Go Ape course, golf course and country trails, or perhaps Lepe Country Park (40 minutes) for walking, swimming and birdwatching. In Lymington (35 minutes), the water takes the show, with sailing, fishing and swims in sea water baths some of the activities to be had.

Now, to look to the past, you’ll be delving into the history of the motor at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (half an hour). Meanwhile, Hurst Castle (45 minutes), a fortress by the sea, was once home to Henry VIII and now has ferry rides and Victorian wing batteries.

Must see

  • Paultons Family Theme Park (6.7 kilometres)
  • Breamore House (10.1 kilometres)
  • Exbury Gardens and Steam Railway (10.2 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Mottisfont (12.0 kilometres)
