  • Well-kept, quiet Wiltshire farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and Highgrove 20 minutes’ drive
  • Café with views over the fields; play barn for an additional fee
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a few days of country life, you should be heading to Down on the Farm, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. This peaceful pop-up site is set on a beef farm with lots of curious cows to meet and great, and, for an additional fee, kids can access the huge play barn to play farm-themed games and ride mini tractors about the place. And for adults? Well, there’s a popular café with views over the farm fields, a modern facilities block with family shower rooms, and a camping field sheltered by mature trees. You can also set off on rural walks from the pitches, which are dog-friendly so Fido can join in the holiday fun too.  There are lots of options for family days out, whether it’s swimming at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) or exploring the standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). And if you’d rather just stick around and chill on site, you can look forward to regular colourful sunsets and nights cosied up around the firepit.

Liked We loved it. The play barn was amazing and such good value. The cafe was great, everything clean, staff lovely and even cute animals. Def coming back

Disliked More showers might be useful in the future as it gets busier. Wasn't as issue for us though.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Was a nice field with lots of space. The cafe looked lovely too. Check in was easy.

Disliked Portaloos were not cleaned while we were there.

You could hear music until 4am so couldn’t sleep. Although we believe it was from a nearby festival but weren’t told about it on arrival.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're sorry to hear that you couldn't sleep, we werenot aware that the festival would disturb anyone and it is completely out of our control. We are raising the noise level with the festival to explain it had an impact on you.
The portal toilets were brought in as extra for the weekend as it was busy and thought it would help people that side of the field. I can assure you, these were checked and cleaned. Unfortunately people can leave these in a mess straight after a clean.

Liked Loads of space to chose where to camp. Fantastic cafe and animals to interact with. The kids enjoyed the play barn and vehicles. The toilets and showers were fab too!

Disliked The pond/lake could do with some of the surface scum/algae removing?

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Great location to stay particularly if you have young children. Spacious level gravel and grass pitches with electric and water easily available. WiFi was also easy to access. Nice view over the small lake and there is a cafe next to the children’s play areas. Staff very pleasant and helpful

Disliked Two private showers ( with toilets)and one separate toilet which in the busy periods I would imagine would get very busy. Hot water was very hot and miss and a matter of luck🥶. Washing up area available but very basic and could do with upgrading.

Electric optional hardstanding motorhome pitch

Liked Really warm welcome after we decided where to put the van (it was one of the right places). We had booked the fire pit so were given a v generous load of kindling, logs and fire lighters. Great to cook over, with a built in side winding grill.
Very open site, in development still.
Wash area v comfortable.
Great place for small children plus dog on lead friendly.

Disliked You can hear a road nearby, at night, if you are noise sensitive. If you are a city person you’d think it was all silent!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Staff were excellent, nothing too much trouble, always helpful, friendly and smiling! The play barn was fantastic, my kids were very happy to spend the whole time there if they could have. Lovely spacious pitch too.

Disliked Whilst the showers were really nicely done, there are only 2 so could be a bit of a queue in the morning especially when getting all the kids sorted. Only one sink for washing up and its outside, could do with another one at least.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked A lovely campsite, small enough you had your own space and the contact with the owners felt personal, but a generous sized campsite with a lovely family atmosphere during busy weekends. Perfect for taking little ones away, with plenty to keep them entertained, including seeing the animals and playing in the play barn. The cafe was also a welcomed escape during heavy rain, with a big space, indoor play section and plenty of food and drink on offer. Not that we watched it but there is also a big screen in the cafe, which creates a nice homely feel and can imagine it being popular when sporting matches are on! The friendly owners really made the stay - nothing was too much bother and you can tell how much love and hard work has gone into the campsite. Will definitely be returning and recommend to anyone looking for a family friendly campsite in beautiful surroundings.

Disliked Was not a problem for us but can imagine if the campsite continues to grow in popularity, the number of bathrooms may cause queuing.

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, chances are the lakeside beach at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) will be your first stop; there you can go kayaking, swimming and dinghy sailing. Active types can also play a round on the local golf course (10 minutes), and you can exercise any dogs on the waterside or woodland walks at Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (15 minutes). There are more leafy strolls – this time among rare trees – at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes), where you can take the kids to follow the Gruffalo Trail or run around on the tree-top walkway. You can tour the Royal gardens at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes), and the gardeners among you might also like to see the manicured grounds at Bowood House and Gardens (35 minutes), while your offspring head for the aerial walkways and ziplines. Introduce some culture into your holiday with a visit to the Roman remains and Georgian-era architecture in Cirencester (25 minutes), or discover the three rings of neolithic standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). If the latter piques your interest, Stonehenge and its engaging visitor centre are but an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away.
