  • Well-kept, quiet Wiltshire farm site 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum and Highgrove 20 minutes’ drive
  • Café with views over the fields; play barn for an additional fee
If you’re looking for somewhere to take the kids for a few days of country life, you should be heading to Down on the Farm, on the edge of the Cotswolds and 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury in North Wiltshire. This peaceful pop-up site is set on a beef farm with lots of curious cows to meet and great, and, for an additional fee, kids can access the huge play barn to play farm-themed games and ride mini tractors about the place. And for adults? Well, there’s a popular café with views over the farm fields, a modern facilities block with family shower rooms, and a camping field sheltered by mature trees. You can also set off on rural walks from the pitches, which are dog-friendly so Fido can join in the holiday fun too.  There are lots of options for family days out, whether it’s swimming at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) or exploring the standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). And if you’d rather just stick around and chill on site, you can look forward to regular colourful sunsets and nights cosied up around the firepit.

What customers say

Friendly, family-run site with stunning views. Praised for spacious pitches, great cafe, and kids' entertainment (play barn, farm animals). Facilities generally clean, though some noted inconsistent shower temps, scarce hot water for washing, and limited loos/showers during peak times. Site's being developed with more planned.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked This is a lovely site either with very friendly staff, we stayed one night after randomly driving past the site a few weeks ago . There was a lot of wildlife which is helped by the wildlife pond and we loved saying hello to the farm animals . The site was clean and had recycling facilities.

Disliked Lots of queues for the toilets due to their shower/toilet set up and I couldn’t figure out if there was supposed to be hot water at the dish washing station or not . However it was a minor inconvenience as the weather and views were amazing

From the manager: We're pleased you enjoyed your stay.
There is normally hot water in the washing up station, so if you didn't have any when you went.
There isn't normally a queue for the toilets, sorry to hear that was the case for you.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked - Play barn was great for the kids.
- Peaceful location
- Cafe on site is a great option
- Staff were always very lovely and polite
- Kids loved the goats!
- Basketball and Swing Ball in the yard was a nice touch

Disliked - Play barn is not free for on site campers (£2.50 per child per day)
- Site is on a fairly steep hill
- There is only 2 showers for the entire site and there is often a queue.
- There is only 1 toilet available if the on site cafe is closed and the showers are in use (a toilet is also in each shower block).
- The elsan point is an approx 400m walk to the very near the site entrance.
- Very quite area which we found a little quite with not much to do.
- I don't think there was an on site small shop with essentials such as milk, bread etc

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The campsite was probably one of the best ones I have stayed at so far. The campground is large, with lots of spots to pick from, not to mention the nice pond in the middle which really adds to the experience. The cafeteria is such a nice addition and the owners are absolutely lovely, very accommodating and friendly. We were camping during the France England World Cup Match so they kept the bar open until the end of the match which was way past the closing time for the campers to come in and watch. The prices were very decent in my opinion and the bathrooms were also some of the best we’ve seen at any campsite. They had a children’s play area and some outdoor toys for them to enjoy too as well as some farm animals that the children could walk up to. Couldn’t recommend it enough and we will definitely be coming back

Disliked The only thing I would maybe add is an extra shower considering the amount of people that were there on the weekend.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Very friendly staff, very welcoming
Goats were a unique touch
The lake at the bottom is peaceful
Aerobatic planes fly over
Good quality land to pitch on, spacious
Showers and toilets were clean, not hot but not freezing cold, lukewarm which is fine for the peak of summer only, however a lack of them
Great value for price comparing to other sites

Disliked Not enough showers or toilets to meet demand - two showers for a large camp site is not enough. Three toilets during working hours (of which two are in the shower) is not enough. Showers need to be warmer.

Local attractions

If the kids are with you, chances are the lakeside beach at Cotswold Water Park (15 minutes’ drive) will be your first stop; there you can go kayaking, swimming and dinghy sailing. Active types can also play a round on the local golf course (10 minutes), and you can exercise any dogs on the waterside or woodland walks at Cleveland Lakes Nature Reserve (15 minutes). There are more leafy strolls – this time among rare trees – at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (20 minutes), where you can take the kids to follow the Gruffalo Trail or run around on the tree-top walkway. You can tour the Royal gardens at Highgrove Gardens (20 minutes), and the gardeners among you might also like to see the manicured grounds at Bowood House and Gardens (35 minutes), while your offspring head for the aerial walkways and ziplines. Introduce some culture into your holiday with a visit to the Roman remains and Georgian-era architecture in Cirencester (25 minutes), or discover the three rings of neolithic standing stones at Avebury (35 minutes). If the latter piques your interest, Stonehenge and its engaging visitor centre are but an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away.
