General

  • Small seasonal campsite on a quiet family-run farm
  • Opened in summer 2016, with refurbished facilities from spring 2017
  • Barbecues encouraged; firepits for hire; fresh lamb for sale

Shepherd's Hut Camping opened in summer 2016, on a family-run sheep farm in Wiltshire.

Come and meet the animals or enjoy a quiet walk around the fields looking for nature and enjoying the outdoors. There is a large fish pond, a perfect place for a quiet sit down in the sun or after a long day. The farm is surrounded by quiet lanes for exploring, although you may meet an occasional tractor going about its work.

The site is in a quiet field adjacent to the house, with easy and direct, separate, access from the road. A short (100 metres or so) walk across the grass will take you to the shower block, with two flushing toilets, washing-up facilities, laundry facilities for a small charge, and two hot, curtained, showers. Amenities were refurbished in spring 2017.

Shepherd's Hut Camping encourages barbecues; firepits are available.to hire. The farm produces its own lamb meat and other produce, so periodically you'll be able to buy fresh lamb to cook or take home with you. Plenty of other farms nearby sell fresh produce such as meat, eggs, milk and other bits – ask the site owners if you'd like some during your stay.

Brilliant facilities, very clean and well kept. Lovely couple came and met us despite our late arrival and I bought a lamb leg for a very reasonable price. Such a quiet and picturesque location perfect for a weekend away. Fire pits for rent with kindling and they will even light your fire for you! Cant comment on wifi but i was totally suprised how good phone reception was considering it is very rural.

Lovely, quiet spot with plenty of space and good, clean facilities. Lovely to have the fire pit too.

    Disliked:

I imagine that the showers are not very private if there are lots of people staying as just a curtain between you and the rest of shared facilities and was a bit difficult to keep your clothes dry and shower/change in the same area, fine for us as a family together as it was very quiet and we showered in one and changed in the other dry one!

Wow, what a lovely quiet location, this was our first time camping and it was amazing, Alison was so helpful and anything we needed we just needed to ask.
Loved the fire pit and logs that is a must, will try there lamb the next time we visit.
The shower block was so clean and tidy, and had everything you needed, would totally recommend here to anybody who would like a nice quiet time away, we loved it and will definitely be back.

Very spacious site (we were the only people there for most of our stay, but it's still a big field for 10 pitches!), Alison is a great friendly and helpful host, we felt very welcome. Nice to have the option of a fire pit and wood available to buy. Good location for exploring the Cotswolds.

    Everything!!

We were the only family staying (except for one night) and I can imagine that the shower block might get a little congested if all 10 pitches were taken, but the facilities provided were excellent.

A lovely, lovely place with loads of space which was safe for the children. Nothing was too much trouble for owner Alison whose welcome was warm and informative. Local produce, milk, eggs, lamb, sausages and bacon - supplied by Alison was superb.
The fridge was a godsend on a very hot weekend.
If you still need connections with the outside world, there isn't wifi, but there are plenty of sockets for charging and 4G in the area.

    Disliked:

Would have liked a seperate sink for hand washing in the bathroom/utility area.

The field was massive and the maximum I think they accept is 10 pitches which means you have so much space! Loads of room for the kids to run and explore.

Loved being part of a farm, kids really enjoyed seeing the hay bales in the sheds and young cows we got to meet.

Alison is great, so so helpful and friendly. She sold us some amazing Lamb Chops for dinner :)
Gave me so much info and always available to help.

Excellent fire pits and plenty of wood. A real winner for us. Loved it!

Quite location, surrounding country lanes were perfect for cyclists, beautiful views, friendly and helpful staff, hot, clean showers, Access to power, kettle and microwave.

    Disliked:

I didn't dislike anything. Thought the site was fantastic value for money but if the owners did want to make a few changes then this is what would make it even better.

Toilets not easy to flush (slow to refill)
    No mirror in bathroom/kitchen area
No hand basin. Felt a bit weird brushing your teeth in the kitchen sink.

Local attractions

This quiet, rural, north Wiltshire location is well set for exploring, at the base of the Cotswolds and a short drive from scenic old Cotswold villages such as Bibury (where you can look around the trout farm and feed the fish) or Cirencester and its shops, parks, cafés and restaurants.

South of the farm is the city of Bath (40-50 minutes' drive) or you could visit the shopping centre of Bristol (45 minutes away). For outdoor activities, the park is 15 minutes from the Cotswold Water Park, a collection of lakes with a number of activities including but not limited to bike hire, canoe hire and climbing (some activities need to be booked before arrival).

The site lies in farmland between the village of Brinkworth (five minutes) with a local pub and shop and Malmesbury (10 minutes' drive). Malmesbury is a handsome old town with a collection of shops, cafés, pubs, takeaways, a petrol station, a leisure centre and supermarkets. It also has a spectacular abbey and one of the oldest hotels in England, well worth a cream tea in its scenic surroundings.
