General

  • Small site on a quiet family-run farm 10 mins' drive from Malmesbury
  • On the edge of the Cotswolds, 45 minutes' drive from Bristol and Bath
  • Barbecues encouraged; firepits for hire; fresh lamb and beef for sale

Poke around the Cotswolds and wind down with a barbecue using produce fresh from the farm… peaceful and rural is the order of the day at Rouselands Farm Camping. At this site, you’ll be breezing into a site based on a family-run farm in Wiltshire, 10 minutes’ drive from Malmesbury and 25 minutes from Chippenham.

This is a splendid place to come for a quiet break close to the Cotswolds – and there’s plenty of scope to get out for rural walks or bike rides on the local lanes, although you might mostly prefer to hang out on site and meet the animals or spend some time by the large fish pond.

It’s quiet here, in a field adjacent to the farmhouse, but there’s still easy access from the road on a dedicated track. A short walk across the grass (100 metres or so) gets you to the shower block, which has two flushing toilets, washing-up facilities, laundry facilities for a small charge, and two hot, curtained showers.

When you’re done exploring for the day, basking in a firepit is one way to unwind – they’re available to hire on site. Barbecues are also encouraged by the site. As this is a working farm, there’s no finer way to sort out dinner than to pick up the fresh lamb and beef produced on site – it’s available seasonally to cook or take home with you. Plus, plenty of other farms nearby sell fresh produce such as meat, eggs, milk and other bits – ask the site owners for tips on getting the best local grub.

Smell of raw sewage as you walked from the tent to the toilets

Only 2 showers/toilets so waited for showers.
Not so much a problem as we waited 10/15 a time but in busy periods this may be a problem

Not having anyone great us so was unsure on who to speak to if needed help. Had to keep going onto the advert as couldn’t find a number if needed help whilst on site

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and for coming to stay at our little site.

I am sorry that we didn't get to see you whilst you were here, we do try and see everyone but as full time farmers with young children we are sometimes in and out and so do not always manage. I have left my number in 4 places about the site so I am sorry if you couldn't see them. I hope that you had everything that you needed.

I can assure you that there is no raw sewage to smell on the way to the shower block. The facilities are adjacent to the farmyard and as such there are sometimes 'farmy' smells afoot but that comes with keeping cows although I can appreciate this is not to everyone's liking. What I think you are referring to is the farm ditch that runs alongside the path to the showers, the other side of the hedge. Unfortunately, due to this exceptionally dry summer the ditch, which normally has a small flow year round, has run dry and left some stagnant pools and exposed the mud at the bottom and you are right, they have been a little pongy at times this summer. I really wish there was more that I could do about it but I am relieved that we have had a little rain and the ditches are starting to flow again and the smell dissipate. Hopefully we will not have the same situation for the foreseeable future.

We hope that you will be back again and would love to meet you then.
Best Wishes
Alison and Shaun

We only spent one night there due to a leaky tent but the owners could not have been nicer and more accommodating, offering us help with whatever we needed. Will definitely be back!

Fantastic little site on the edge of the Cotswolds. Campsite is a field on a farm, with shower lock and basic facilities, so quiet and peaceful with opportunities to wander and see all the many cows. Travelled from just a mile or so up the road with my 4yo daughter who wanted to try camping and she absolutely loved it.

Local attractions

Since you’re so close to the Cotswolds here, mapping your way there might be one of the first things on your to-do list. And while it may be known for its characterful villages (Bibury, half an hour’s drive away, is one of these), there’s a beach too at Cotswold Water Park (20 minutes’ drive), making paddleboarding, canoeing and kayaking easy to access, or there are giraffes, lions and other big animals to see at Cotswold Wildlife Park (45 minutes).

When you’re craving the buzz that comes with the busier towns or cities, that’s no problem either. Just outside the Cotswolds, Cirencester (25 minutes) is particularly scenic. That's if you're not too busy browsing the town’s museum or making a splash in the open-air pool. Further afield, Bath (45 minutes) and Bristol (45 minutes) have their own spoonfuls of historical sites, shops and museums.

For those days where you prefer to stick close to your nest, a trip to 12th-century Malmesbury Abbey (10 minutes) might do. Or, there’s all the artistic flair of the Elemental Sculpture Park (20 minutes) to take in and Westonbirt Arboretum’s treetop walkway and Gruffalo trail (25 minutes).

Must see

  • STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway (14.7 kilometres)
  • Westonbirt, The National Arboretum (14.8 kilometres)
  • Avebury Stone Circle (19.5 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Heelis (14.5 kilometres)
  • Avebury (19.5 kilometres)
